Lets face it, Religion is never gonna happen. As funny as it would be, it would no doubt be offensive to many. I doubt Empire would post on its website humurous mashups relating to God, Allah or Xenu. It would alienate so many people, it's not going to happen.

i don't see why not. as long as the mashups aren't mocking the religions (it would be hard to acheive that in a mashup anyway), and are just humerous becasue of the pun on the title then no offence should result. also, most religions teach tolerance, and practicioners are supposed to view the world calmly and rationally. It is easy to see that these posters are not designed to insult religions and are just funny because they play around with the words.

Of course all  religions teach tolerance but in our current political climate where widespread riots are caused by a cartoon in a newspaper I don't think it would be a wise choice for empire. Now I would have no problem doing The Buddha, The Bad and The Ugly but I wouldn't advise doing When Harry Met Allah.

And I want to make it known that I meant no offense by my comments, peace out.

i can't see why you'd get in trouble for when harry met allah. i think thats a pretty good one lol. how about Pope Fiction or Once Upon A Time In The Mosque.

- alter the genre of the film
- alter the setting

btw you could do a broader topic eg: celebrities, and run it for two weeks.

Not a fan of subjects that are as broad as Cheese, or Kitchen Appliances / Utensils.  Prefer it to be a bit more limited, I think the Arnold thread has proven that limited subjects can produce quality results.

WWF / Pro Wrestling

Sylvester Stallone

Hanna Barbera cartoons

Burt Reynolds

Trotters Independant Traders

firstly, how can you dislike a broader topic? there are no disadvantages. it means there are loads more funny entries, and as an individual you can produce more.

secondly, i know nothing about:
- Hanna Barbera cartoons
- Burt Reynolds
- Trotters Independant Traders

and very little about:
- WWF / Pro Wrestling
- Sylvester Stallone

Hanna Barbera are behind a lot of popular cartoons including The Flintstones, Scooby Doo, and Top Cat.  (It really is quite a broad topic)

Trotters Independant Traders is basically just Only Fools and Horses.

WWF / Pro Wrestling, nearly everyone knows Hulk Hogan and Andre The Giant. Most people will have some kind of knowledge of wrestling, even if it is just half memories from childhood.

As for Stallone and Reynolds ... well ... it is a website for a film magazine ... I would guess a lot of the people on here are film fans in one way or another, and stallone and reynolds are pretty big names.

I've enjoyed the more limited topics, I think people have been a bit more creative with them.  Not saying the topics have to be ultra restrictive, just that it's nice when every topic isn't as broad as "things that start with the letter "e" in it's name".

empire won't be keen to choose such narrow topics after the poor turnout for the whedon topic. if its cartoons, something such as looney-tunes or disney may be better as they're more well known.

In fairness Hanna Barbera cartoons is a much bigger topic than Whedon, or even kitchen utensils / appliances.  It's made up of some of the most famous cartoon characters of all time.  As for the Whedon thread, the negativity and moaning in it was what put me off entering it.  (I didn't start posting mash-ups until after it)  There were similar complaints about the Arnold topic, which turned out to be very successful.

Just to list some of the cartoons they've produced over the years:

Johnny Bravo
Dexter's Labratory
Powerpuff Girls
I am Weasel
Captain Planet
Snorks
Smurfs
Godzilla
Capt. Caveman
Josie and the Pussycats
Wacky Races
Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines
Space Ghost
Johnny Quest
The Jetsons
Yogi Bear
Huckleberry Hound

(oh ... and The Banana Splits)

That's just to emphasise that a seemingly smaller topic can be quite big if people go to the bother of looking into it.

Quite frankly, as a topic, it's aces!

But, anyway, I didn't want to get into a discussion really ... I was just stating my preference, and giving some suggestions for topics I wouldn't mind seeing.  It doesn't bother me at all if they are chosen or not.  When all is said and done, it's supposed to be a bit of fun.

Edit:  ...  Waterborne Vehicles .... seriously?  and you thought my topics were limited!

Another Suggestion: Simpson & Bruckheimer, Ben Affleck

How about the topic 'Quintessentially British'?
Like stereotypical British things -
-Weather? [ie. RAIN!]
-High Tea
-Elevenses
-Red double decker buses
-Red phone boxes
-Beefeaters
-Queues
etc.

i like the countries idea - lots of mileage by picking just one country.
as the original suggestion said - british would be great, but i think france, or usa would be good too.
plenty of cultural items and stereotypes to play with.

Erm...
Hobbitonlass what I meant was the topic 'Quintessentially British'.
And then gave some examples of things that are that.
Not for the actual topics to be Red telephone boxes etc!

here are some sensible words posted on the cheese thread...

quote:

ORIGINAL: tommypocket

Hey Empire, I've got an idea...

As we've only got a short week for a new topic, why don't why try something a tad different?

Firstly, get the Cheese Gallery up, then suggest a new topic that's a little bit left of centre as a three day experiment (an outside the box 'drop one letter'/'replace the actor'/'change the certificate' sort of thing - see the future topics thread), then start a new 'safe' topic on Friday!

Perhaps I should have posted this in the 'future topics' thread but my work internet's soooooo slow today. I'm too impatient...

Either way, we want a new topic; I'm itching to get mashing...

Someone mentioned unmade sequels/prequels. I think that's an idea with real potential. However, for me it has to be Stallone; with the great work people did with Arnie coupled with the Expendables images being released this week, surely it's the next logical choice?

Whilst watching the football last night (and NOT doing any mash-ups), it struck me how much Petr Cech looks like Franz Ferdinand singer Alex Kapranos... and that got me thinking; could 'look-a-likes' be a decent mash-up topic?! I know its just replacing heads, but it could have some comedy potential...

How about Pixar as a theme. That'll scupper all the Wall-E mash-ups for a week. Or it may actually get every single Wall-E idea used up in the space of a week.

not likely. people use wall-e loads in the mashups cos its easy to replace it with things. replacing thins with wall-e won't be the same, so wall-e wil probably reign on in later topics if they did pixar as a topic. pixar's a pretty good idea though.
