 I love watching powerful moving films but one film topped them all. Dead Mans Shoes... I cried and cried and cried.

You've missed so very many depressing films - most of which will get 4 or 5 stars from Empire for their worthy, unflinching protrayals of weighty matters...

Most recently - The Duchess - a tedious film about a spirited woman having the spark crushed out of her until she gives in and takes it. Nice frocks though. Sophie's Choice - where the star crossed lovers' romantic ending is to commit suicide together - and so many more. The world is swimming in depression, disaster, suffering and misery. Why exactly do we need extra artificial helpings from the movies? Give me Monsters Versus Aliens any day of the week!

Changeling.

I chose it as my birthday movie. Big mistake. Anyone who has seen it knows why, and anyone who hasn't should know about it going in.

how can anyone ignore irreversible. the wrong guy gets his face caved in buy a harmless twit, the real rapist gets away with it. we then see the rape ( probably the most distressing thing ever put to film) then we see the guy she was with was high on drugs and trying to cheat on her, which is the reason she leaves and gets raped. Follwing this we find that she was pregnant the whole time. to then end with the cheery comment of "time destroys everything" just about took 5 years off of me.

you perfectly summed up the numbing effect of Reqiuem for a dream.. but what about Munich - definately not a date movie.

Jesus, I agree with Leightwinst; the ending of the mist was soooo insanely grim, it left me feeling decidedly dodgy and uneasy. Changeling was pretty upsetting, also.

My mate bought 21 grams on a dodgy dvd back from thailand. I'm not sure how it happened - as i presume the front and back covers were scanned from the original - but the critics quote on the back read 'Absolutely Hilarious.' Either a mix up or they are some dark film critic mo-fo's in thailand.

BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD. it was so depressing, it inspired me to make my own list of most depressing movies. it's about two brothers who try to steal jewels from their parents jewelry shop, but accidentally kill their mom. one brother tries to kill the other when he finds out he was sleeping with his wife. something happens, one of the brothers is put in the hospital. the dad finds out who robbed the shop, goes to the hospital and smothers him with a pillow. there's more twisted, dark details but i think i blanked some of the movie out of memory it was so bad. bad as in loathsome, evil content, but artsy enuf to trick me into seeing it by a critic i will never listen to again.

THE PRESTIGE and THE DARK KNIGHT and MEMENTO are pretty dreadful, too.

Maybe its just me, but everytime i watch the Spielberg version of WOTW i begin to feel very depressed and i think about it everytime someone mentions a depressing movie.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Couldn't stop thinking about it for days afterwards. Also found In Bruges very sad.

 There's a film I saw when I was very young that involved a young deaf, mute blonde boy who accidentally leads his beloved horse into a marsh, in thick fog. He tries to save the horse as it sinks. There's a similar scene in The Never-Ending Story but this is much more powerful and completely devastating. I've never heard of or seen the film since and would love to know what it was called, any ideas anybody?

 Dead Mans shoes, very sad. Also One flew over the cuckoo's nest didnt have a happy ending really, Jack Nicholson great in this film.

I would have to pick When the Wind Blows. I think that has to be one of the saddest animated films I've ever seen. Done in that lovely Briggs animation but just so sad. I never got over watching that. I agree with others who've said Dead Mans Shoes as well felt like my heart was being ripped out by the end of that film.

Absolutely amazing film, but the scene with the little girl in the red coat on a pile of bodies is the most harrowing thing i have ever seen in a movie!!

I saw FUNNY GAMES about 7 years ago during my first foray into world cinema, and my usually bouyant mood is still struggling to recover from it. This is a film that I felt was utterly pointless in its sadistic torments, and any film that blows a kid away with a shotgun (regardless of whether u see it or not) should be shoved straight back up the director's arse from whence it came. The ending where the 2 lads casually push the mother out of the boat with her hands and feet tied... well, nuff said. I agree with Simon's choice of MILLION DOLLAR BABY too, thought that was going to be uplifting! Happily haven't seen the rest on the list, but now have a reason to avoid them!

Good GOD that was horrible to watch.

Also, good call on the ending to The Mist leightwinst, though I suspect it's because it was just an unbelievably depressing ending, rather than a whole depressing film, that it didn't find it's way into this list. Still, talk about a buzz killer!

 What not last year's Hunger. Worst mistake I've ever made in the cinema? It's not going to see Bangkok Dangerous or PS I Love You. It's buying a big bag of sweets and a large Fanta before going to see a wonderful but incredibly depressing film about a hunger strike. Marvellous.

'Happiness' (1998) by Todd Solondz depressed me the most.

@ Evil_Monkey25: Yup, 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' is a definate contender.
