Fantastic episode. The Star Wars bit was amazing, as was most of it to be honest, but the line of the episode for me was

What the fuck is this? Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Cunt?

Inspired

Yep the Star Wars description was brilliant.

"The one about the fucking space hairdresser and the cowboy. He's got a tinfoil pal and a pedal bin. His father's a robot and he's fucking fucked his sister. Lego. They're all made of fucking lego."

What struck me about that episode was that Malcom - who could have been a bit lost as a character sans government - has actually become the most interesting character, in terms of his motivations and things. I like the idea of him as an idealist and a pragmatist, ultimately, that's quite interesting. And obviously, he's the one who provides the most laugh out loud moments.

The tonal difference between the cabinet, who seem a bit sinister and opposition who are obviously just hilariously incompetent as well is interesting.

Well Malcolm Tucker is back!!!

That episode was absolutely brilliant and like everyone else has already said, the Star Wars piece had me in absolute stitches, this just continues to be one of the best-written pieces of modern comedy!

"That's right off you go pork chop, fuck off back to the Flintstones. See if you don't go I'll get Nigella Lawson on you, I'll shove this down your fucking throat and pull it out of your arse."

"Do something, I don't care. Piss in a fusebox. Finger the security guard."

I like watching Mannion and co. too though, and next week's looks equally good. "I feel like I've joined the fucking Scientologists."

We all know the only thing THOI is still missing is Jamie....

I disagree, Jamie's rants were some of the most memorable moments of the first two series, not to mention In The Loop where his fax machine assault was possibly the best scene in the entire film and it's got some stiff competition! "First of all turn that fucking racket off! It's just vowels, subsidised fucking vowels! The only reason people listen to this shit is because it's considered too arrogant to actually wear a hat saying I went to fucking private school!"

But then it becomes a joke within a joke.
What we get from Jamie's rants is more vile than that of Malcolm but in the same sense its so ott that it takes any sense of grounding it has and throws it up in the air.It became more like a competition of what character was going to end up saying the most twisted-raw quotes than what,I felt, was mainly going on with the story. For me it could have got to a stage where the raw language was going to get tiresome.

I think what we get from Malcolm, interms of rawness, is just right.Yes we get other characters coming out with some great one-liners but there is a sense ,with a few of them, that its not as natural and it is perfectly a sign of stress and bafflement which pushes them to make said quotes/speeches.

Overall I felt the character of Jamie was so over the top and so damning, aggressive and generally vile that you'd think how he ever got the role in the first place, unless he just bullied his way to the top.

I think Jamie’s good in a crisis.  Not good for a crisis, but good for showing us that things must be really bad if he’s here.  He’s kind of like the Labour version of “the fucker” and the running joke that he embodies (that there is someone worse than Malcolm… which there isn’t… but it’s an inherently funny idea to suggest now and again) probably indicates that as much as Jamie is deservedly loved by viewers he’s probably best used sparingly.

The character I’m also missing is Julian whats-his-name.  “Ah Julian!  What have you got for us today?  A ban on sandcastles?”.

Generally speaking The Thick of It is tight as a drum to such an extent that I find it a very difficult thing to discuss.  There’s seemingly nothing that can be added to it by discussing it and I find myself just celebrating quotes.  Aside from the Star Wars bit my favourite line was: “Now if you’ll excuse us I need to have a word with Nicola.  The kind of word mummy has with the kids to explain why Daddy’s going to be in the papers tomorrow.”   “Don’t you worry your pretty little head about it Geoff.  ‘Little’ being the operative word.  ‘Pretty’, not being.”

Malcolm stole the series from Hugh and Peter Mannion has stolen it from Malcolm.  The government episodes just seem to be such a boiler-room furnace of comedy next to the opposition episode but despite the most recent one being in a lower register it’s still 10/10 as far as I’m concerned.  I’ve just realised I’ve only seen the last series once…that’s a lunchtime trip to HMV then.

That was hilarious. There are very few people that can do disinterested sarcasm as well as Roger Allam can. And I liked that the episode gave the more minor characters a chance to shine too - Stewart Pearson and Phil are both great creations.

Very funny episode, I love the stand-off's between Pearson and Mannion.

"If it's Swain we'll just shout sweaty Swain as he dehydrates on Prime Minister's Questions, if it's Holhurst he'll just look like a shepherd that's about to meet the Queen and if it's Dan Miller we're fucked."

"This is great Stewart, a conference in crisis management that's been scuppered by an actual fucking crisis!"

"I buy a big issue out of social embarrassment, I don't buy a fucking bank!"

The policy-jamming bit was hilarious as well! "Yes and ho." "Free maternity leave for people getting a puppy." "Obese olympics."

Ahead of series 4 I did a rewatch of all three previous series and the specials and I think I'm coming round to the poin of. Iew that The Thick Of It may just be the best British comedy of my lifetime. Genuinely cant think of one I enjoy as much. Possibly The Office, possibly Extras? But really, there arent many shows that reach the level of quality and consistency of The Thick Of It. Utterly brilliant.

It's testament to Iannucci & co that the last episode was one of the best they've ever done....and that was without Malcolm.

Roger Allam's been spectacular in this series so far, almost everything that's come out of his mouth has had me in stitches.

I really liked this when it first started out with Chris Langham, yet it has grown & developed into something even better than that.

Right now, no other comedy touches it. Not much television either....

This is a 7 part series. Did a Beatles special spring unexpectedly out of nowhere when they were scheduling?

The idiots at the Beeb don't seem to be showing this next week.

I love that they didn't have Nicola pull it back at the end....because in real life that wouldn't happen.

I'm a late convert to this, I have missed out on something truly amazing. Luckily Virgin Media have put the series on the on demand service. except they pulled series 3 for some reason, the BASTARDS!

Best of the series so far for me, the way things starting to interweave - and yeah high drama and tension as well as brilliant belly laughs.
