Hutton was a bit of a whitewash, even ignoring just has 'caught out' moments and twists of truth. Possibly go that way. Curiously, this isn't even mentioned in the blurb for next week.

Are they doing another series after this at some point? Given how the lines of questioning went, it's difficult to see many of them being able to salvage their careers - even if the committee looks in danger of being discredited.

Iannucci has said on twitter this morning that next week's is the final episode of the final series.

While that makes me sad, I can't help but think that now's the right time to do it and end on a high. How many shows manage to maintain being this brilliant over four series?

Has Ianucci been credited at all as a writer this series? I think I've just seen his name turn up as director.

I know Smith has a lot of writing credits - his Mr and Mrs Smith radio comedy was one of this years highlights as well

Just finished watching and ,as always, it was a really good episode.
Hopefully next weeks final episode will be just as long.

No, it's a half hour again. The schedule's already up.

oh well.
Am I right in thinking the Americans were/are going to do a spin-off of The Thick Of It?

It only reached pilot stage I think - I'd still want to see it as I think Oliver Platt was playing Malcolm.

Instead they got Veep which was so-so.

Yep I completely agree. With this inquiry over the Mr Tickle situation, it's difficult to see how they could continue. Or more to the point, how they could muster a more fitting ending.

I will miss it though....

I'm just about to start watching Veep and I'm hearing things similar to that, distinctly average seems the general consensus so far.

I will try hard to not compare it with TTOI as it has no chance if I do and it should be viewed as a completely different show but it's going to be hard not to. I've never been able to get with the US version of The Office and have a feeling it may be the same with Veep.

Wonderful penultimate episode on Saturday night, it's very sad to know we'll be saying goodbye to one of the finest works in BBC history on Saturday evening but I do think it's the right time to close it out and I wouldn't bet against a potential film sequel to In The Loop, whatever Iaunacci may have said in the past.

Goolding: "Mr Tucker, do you know the rules of association football?"
Tucker: "Well I know if you're going to have an affair you better take out a super injuction first."

Phil: "My position is if you leak, you're weak. If I'm going to come at you, I'm going to come at you head on. Man on man. That's how I like it..........politically speaking."

"How do you turn Mr Tickle into Mr Happy? Lithium."

Tucker: "She wants a pension more than Richard Hammond wants a punch in the face."

Not much to add really, other than it was really great. Again.

I think my favourite during the enquiry episode was Stuart Pearson. I was in stiches during his testimonies, and I have no idea how long the statements they give would usually be in such circumstances, but the fact the kept referring to ridiculously high page numbers in his statements (page 296 etc) just made me giggle, the fact someone had to make notes and type up all of his bullshit was just a hilarious thought to me. He was really great in those opening moments. Loved it.

I also loved Pearson's scenes, especially the matter-of-factly, you-should-expect-nothing-less-from-me way he gave his oath. "When I close the door I'm no longer Stewart Pearson........well I am. I'm a husband, I'd say I'm a lover, I'm a chef, I'm a carpenter."

"You're not even Manchester's top Malcolm Tucker tribute band."

Glenn's quitting scene was a fine pay off for the entire series.

Yeah, Glenn kind of stole the final episode and became the moral compass for the series in a weird way. Great as ever.

Stuart's final outburst was great.

"How are you unmurdered?"

"What a shit day" seemed a very appropriate line to end on, as did the fact that when they were smugly rejoicing the end of Tucker something came along to bite them in the arse.

Most hateful character? I'd probably go with Adam, I think.

No, Armando Ianucci has been quite clear that series four is indeed the very last series of the show.

Nae really. He became the embodiment of those who voted for Nick Clegg only to later realise that they'd voted for Nick Clegg.

The walking font of muddle-speak got the biggest laugh out of me. Something about the foundation of the Tory party and c*nts - his most lucid utterance of the series.

Yep, that's it. Ianucci has already confirmed in several interviews he is moving on to focus on Veep and other projects now and there will be no fifth series or a film sequel to In The Loop.

Loved the final episode, going to miss the show sorely, it's been one of the best things on British television in recent memory. Glenn did in fact steal the episode, Adam Kenyon did as well with some great bits - "You know Terri, it really, really baffles me how you've remained unmurdered", "You know what I'd love to double stamp? You're throat.", "Subtitles, you need subtitles!"

It's a shame we won't ever get to see any more of Mary Drake though. "Dosac is one iota away from being shut down and swallowed up by the home office and the cock-ups left to do the tea run! Which I like weak and white, like my men."

Well, what a way to go out, both for the show and the characters. Glen restores his legendary status after his "I'm a man" breakdown in the xmas special, which had the double bonus of giving the anti-Tories a couple of top insults to throw around, from "six-toed, born-to-rule pony-fuckers" to (my fave of the show and second only to the Star Wars reference as best in the season) "a foundation built on a solid bed of cunts". A very honest outburst from a man who saw his last hope of government influence turn into "Tweedletwat and Tweedleprick".

Malcolm laying the facts of what it means to be Malcolm Tucker to Ollie was superbly done as was his finale when he bowed out of his last words with a "doesn't matter".

Its a shame it's all over, but I'm also glad that Ianucci had the sense to know when the ride ends.
