The Mentalist is a good show but I think over the past 3 years they havent really gotten anywhere with the Red John storyline, the closest they got was with the first 6-10 episodes of season 2 with Bosco taking over the case that was as exciting as it got but after that it settled back into its normal routine. Just hoping season 3.2 is better.

i'm hoping the red john thing comes to an end this season. i just hope the show can survive without a big bad like him.

We've already had one new lead (of sorts) on Red John this season, in the form of Todd Johnson, the dead cop killer. That gives me hope that we'll get something more on him before it comes to an end. They really can't drag that mystery out for too much longer.

And yeah, I'm pretty sure the show could survive without Red John. There have been plenty of good episodes and villains unrelated to him.

yeah but there was also that woman in season 2 that knew about Red John (Bosco's secretary) and she was killed by Red John similar to Todd Johnson. Without Red John I guess Patrick Jane really has no reason to be with the CBI.

Assuming he doesn't kill Red John when they finally catch up with him there could be a million other things that would keep Jane working for the CBI.

Can anyone remember that CrimeScene guy (I think he worked for the police/CBI or something like that anyway) from the last ep in Season 2?  Jane met him at a crime scene (funnily enough).

Although we haven't seen him since and I only saw the episode once - He's who I think Red John is.  There was just something about him.  I should probably watch it again though.  If anyone's seen that one more than once, what do you think?

Yeah i got the same feeling when i watched the episode and it's notable that the only other episode he's been in was the pilot - both Red John eps.

He's a lot of people's favourite but it might just be a red herring, Jane called him on his creepiness when they first met and it'd be stange with all his skills if he turns out to be Red John and Jane didn't pick up on it, he seems to have dismissed him as a possible suspect.

TIGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

He's too young surely considering Red John has been comitting crimes since the late 90's.

So who's RJ's insider at the CBI? All suspicion points towards it being Bertrum but he's got to be a red herring, the William Blake quote was just far too obvious. It isn't Hightower so it doesn't really leave a lot of real suspects. I think it could turn out to be Van Pelts FBI fiance who's name escapes me....

could be him but we still need to find out whether he was in the building when that guy was burnt. Liked the episode with Hightower just hoping that they bring her back, maybe her and Patrick go on some undercover mission to catch the insider who framed her.

Very much so. Mostly the show rides on the charisma of Simon Baker but he plays the character very well.

Indeed, that was a fantastic ending. As much as I enjoy the show I probably wouldn't have kept watching if it weren't for Simon Bakers 'Jane'. He is superb in the role to the point where you really can't imagine anyone else playing the character.

I've seen in advertised but don't really fancy it due to the fact that he is Jane

The Guardian's pretty good. A totally different character to Jane, rarely have I seen an actor play two leads in TV shows so differently.

And he does a good US accent which is quite different to his Australian one.

best bit about jane is that he'll run from 1st sign of danger, no heroics for him.

The bad thing about The Mentalist is that it is one of those procedurals that takes ages getting back to the main story, when looking at other CBS procedurals like The Good Wife or even Hawaii Five-O after a couple of episodes they return to the main story arc, however it has been 3-4 weeks since Hightower escaped and they havent even mentioned since or gone back to it. I realise they are saving it for the finale but it would be nice to develop the story along with the characters.

So that was a pretty confusing ending to the first half of the finale! I'm not quite sure what Hightower is up to, La Roche killing the suspect was well, suspect, but that could be a red herring. Still think Van Pelts fiancée is suspicious....

In the US it was shown as a two hour special and just runs on as one episode. Splitting it in two means there isn't a satisfying end to the first hour. My advice (as I mentioned elsewhere) don't look at the digital channel info for the episode if it is anything like last week as it gave away a major plot point from the very end of the finale.
