Tuesday 24th March, 11.50pm, BBC4 BBC4 is backing to showing major TV series from yesteryear. The original and the best. Newman's highly controversial 4 part series was first shown in the late 70s and has not, I think, been repeated although it finally made its way to DVD last year. In a period where police corruption was making regular headlines (see also Red Riding), Newman crafted a show of 4 parts, each dealing with different aspects of a case when a detective frames a known villain. Influenced by a then very well known case of George Davis, who was wrongly convicted for armed robbery and a national campaign (George Davis is innocent) took place to free him. The shows cover the 'victim', the cops, the lawyers and prison. A social realist drama rather than a slick cop show. Controversial? How many TV dramas have resulted in questions in Parliament? Highly recommended.
