Does anyone know yet what is on the July release of the movie other than the theatrical release? I can`t seem to get the latest info. I know a Directors Cut is coming out with everything on it but I guess it would say in the DVD title if this was that one?

The intersting part:

"Watchmen" will be released in DVD and Blu-ray simultaneously in late July on DVD and Blu-ray, with the theatrical version going out on standard disc. The standard DVD will sell for $28.98 and the Blu-ray director's cut for $35.99.

There will be no bonus features on the standard-disc version of "Watchmen," while a special edition DVD of the directors cut -- retailing for $34.99 -- will place elaborate bonus features on a second disc. A street date of July 21 or July 28 was being finalized, making for a release either just before or after the annual Comi-Con convention.

Having just read this bit of info on the site and seeing as the dicrector's cut will be available in July as a 2-discer, does that mean a bigger edition inc Black Freighter and more extras is now no longer on the horizon?

I'd like to try and get the most complete edition, although it looks like BluRay is yet again taking some of the extras!!

i reckon a bigger version is still on the horizon. im surprised by the lack of audio commentary, snyder is usually fairly entertaining and dave gibbons will do absolutely anything these days, so i guess that will be on the "super" version.

this article takes a look at the concept of the really naff sounding facebook feature on the blu-ray-

Thats what I thought I`ll try and wait to buy the Ultimate Edition and will rent the Directors Cut. If it isn`t that ultimate and theres stuff on the other dvd`s that are cool that you can`t get with the ultimate I`ll double dip but I want to avoid that.

HMV Exclusive Packaging

Not sure about this. Looks a bit tacky to me, a bit like the Simpsons head editions. I'd much prefer digipak special editions than the gimmicky stuff, even better would be those digipak-book style things (HMV special edition of Assassination of Jesse James is what I'm talking about). I'd prefer a slipcase to be honest! This one is also £18!!

Sometimes you think Alan Moore should die just so he can roll in his grave. Those HMV heads are just atrocious.

I really don't know why Warners didn't just release the super duper set in the beginning ( well i can, screwing is out of more money) along isde a single disc theatrical cut

or alternitavely why didnt they just do a branching option, surely the disc can hold the information, then later in the year release the 'full' set as it were

OK, I'm now offically confused about this release.

Evidence points that the version Warners are releasing in the UK will be the Theatrical cut only while the US gets the 24-min long extra 'Director's Cut' (minus the Black Frieghter and linking footage).

However, now I'm seeing reports - http://www.cinematical.com/2009/06/03/watchmen-blu-ray-bulked-up-in-uk/ - that Paramount will be releasing their own version of the DVD/BD in the UK with the extra 24 mins and additonal features.

So when is the Paramount version coming out, what extras does that have and will it have the 'Maximum Movie Mode' that the US Warners BD has (as I'm quite interested in that feature)?

And I bet now that 20th Century Fox will plan to release their own bootleg version too

Can anyone clarify this?

While thats an interesting move (and a first as far as i can tell, for two studios to put out the same film) surely its just a massive disaster waiting to happen? And do Paramount honestly believe that financially this is a good idea? Also, it annoys me that there is a wealth of great films out there without a single release, yet two seperate studios will finance and put out two seperate releases of this film, seemingly in an attempt to claw back whatever they can from its box office failure.

Rant over. The real worrying issue here comes in the form of a quote from Snyder, promising that this will be "considerably more violent ... and sexier". The film was already violent enough, but thats not my point; based on what Zack Snyder thinks is sexy, judging from the original cut of the film and 300, i dread to think what this extended cut has in store...

Warner only own US distribution for the DVD/Blu ray. Paramount own the international rights so Warner can't put out their own disc even if they wanted to. The first article mentions Paramount as distributer, but because of the Warner v Fox legal nonsense earlier this year it's easy to forget that Paramount retained the international rights as part of the deal when it sold it's claim on Watchmen back to Warner.

Even so it is still confusing as to what exactly we're getting. The second article still states it is theatrical only but with some extras not on the US version. I've got a sneaky suspicion that Paramount either may not have retained the rights to the extended cuts, or Warner won't give them access for a while hoping as their blu rays are region free people will import.

All speculation of course, with nothing to back it up. I'll be interested to see how this pans out.

Disappointing they went with Dr Manhattan's head. They should have made an HMV Exclusive Giant Blue Phallus version.
