Not just about how the Academy criminally overlooked The Dark Knight but also that Rourke did not win Best Actor. Talk about injustice...

I am sickened and disheartened by the Academy's failure to recognise the glory of Mickey "the comeback king" Rourke's performance in 'The Wrestler'. It's a sad day when a performance of such rugged, masculine intensity is overlooked in favour of the legitimisation of the effeminate by a bunch of appeasement junkies. Before you guys (and gals!) go calling me a homophobe, let me just say that there's absolutely nothing wrong with being gay. Just don't put it on my cinema screen.

If there's nothing wrong, what's wrong with it in a cinema? It's not like it was gay porn and, hey, it's acting! The current rumour is that some of those actors were - shock! - straight...

Mickey will be back! with Iron Man 2 and whatever else he does next, like The Expendables or that movie he just finished with Statham/50 Cent.

And that goes for everyone involved with Slumdog Millionaire, I really hope Danny sticks with his more interesting smaller films and doesn't get seduced by Hollywood bluster. As for The Dark Knight, well it's just passed the $1 Billion mark worldwide, is that not enough kudos? As for Mickey Rourke, if he keeps up the good work he will have another chance, try not to feel too sad for a rich guy who's in big demand, especially during these times when so many have lost everything.

I don't share the bizarre homophobic views of that guy but I too am gutted that Mickey Rourke didn't win it. In fact the majority of my predictions were wrong this year. I'd love to have seen Rourke's Oscar acceptance speech, if it was anywhere near as naughty as his Spirit Awards speech there would've been trouble for him.

Your cinema screen?
''Don't go calling me a homophobe, just because I can't stand looking at gays or being in their presence, does not make me a homophobe''
Mickey Rourke was awesome, but was basically being Mickey Rourke. Sean Penn was facking outstanding and barely recognisable, I thought he deserved it. But that's just my opinion.
What's more criminal is just how many Oscars Slumdog ended up winning. I thought it was okaaay-ish, and yet the world seems to be going crazy for it

Two justices happened at the Oscars...1 Ledger got a well deserved supporting actor which was the only Oscar the film deserved. 2. THANK FUCK SEAN PENN WON FOR MILK! The most deserved Oscar of the night, made up Rourke didn't get it because it simply wasn't the best performance. Slumdog cleaning up? Another load of bull.

I haven't seen Sean Penn in Milk, but I'd be very surprised if he topped Rourke in The Wrestler.. big shock for me.

Slumdog 'cleaning up' is a bit ridiculous for me... aside from being extraordinarily well directed which is beyond dispute, it just had no appeal at all for me.  Direction yeah, cinematography definitely.  Other than that, bad characterisation, uninvolving story.  Massively overrated in my opinion.

Personally don't agree with all the wins for Slumdog, especially achievement in sound - how Wall.E didn't win that I don't know.

Porr Mickey Rourke, I was hoping he'd win. Pity that gay trumps sad in the oscar takes. It's the Oscar version of rock-paper-scissors, gay-sad-mad. Also, damn, I was hoping In Bruges'd win Original Screenplay.

Just shows it was a really bad year for movies when it came to Oscar nods. Slum dog should have been nominated for best foreign film at most but winning 8 oscars is a joke no wonder people are switching off in their droves. As for Sean Penn winning best actor is was a travisty Mickey Rourke was brilliant and well deserved to win I think the academy were afraid he might get up there and give some crazy speach including a few f**ks!!

This is probably Rourke's second major role from the last couple of years as he has gotten more back into acting - and he got an Oscar nod. How in hell does that translate to last chance?

Penn's performance was good - but there were 3 better. They didn't get publicly slated by Rourke though

Hard to disagree with most of the awards Slumdog won given the competition. There wasn't a lot. I like the film - and thank whatever that meritricious crap Button got shut out.

As much as I like Danny Boyle, the thought that Slumdog Millionaire is this years outstanding film is ridiculous. This as well as the Bafta success must mean that this film has become one of the most over-hyped films of recent years. Still, it isn't to blame. The blame lies with the MOR Academy and the lees-than-vintage year for cinema. Nothing this year has come close to There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men, last years two big-hitters. Still, there's always next (i.e. this) year! Anyway, well done Danny Boyle. Shame you didn't win for one of your better films instead!

NEVVVVVVER! But all these fanboys who are saying its a travesty I bet they haven't even seen the other 5 performances. Having watched some archive footage of the real Milk I was shocked to how on the nose it was. Better actor, better performance

Well I'm happy, I won the Oscar Bet I've had with my brother for the past decade. I picked 17 of the main 20 catogries. I win £40. Schwoar!

I did put down Rourke to win though... but kudos to Penn.

I don't really think actors should just get marks for impersonation though. But I do genuinely think it is a good performance, and better than I've seen from him for a while. Although I couldn't tell whether it was Milk who was a bit crap at public speaking or if that was how Penn was showing him - but I'm looking forward to the release of the documentary referenced in the film which, for the most part, I still think were the best bits of the film. I'm pretty sure it is about to be released over here on the back of the film.

But I not only think Rourke's was better - I rate Langellas and Jenkins higher, too.

Thank god Penn won Best Actor - he totally deserved that over any of the others - and yes that includes Rourke!! Plus, it won Best Original Screenplay. Of course, it should have won Bes Picture but the hype machine that is Slumdog Millionaire cleaned up instead. I'm sorry but I still stick by my original view that this is one of the worst films of 2009 (already) and came across as westernised racism throughout. Even if I considered this film objectively, it certainly does not deserve EIGHT Oscars, there were films that deserved those gold statues so much more. This was originally going straight to DVD in America FFS!!! And that is the route it should have taken. What a farce the Oscars have become. :(

I'm not quite sure if you're referring to a documentary linked to MILK but if so, then The Times of Harvey Milk came out on R2 DVD a few weeks ago and is indeed excellent.

Not sure whether to laugh or be mildly offended here!? Of course, it's true and if you can get all three in one role you're laughing (Monster anyone!? ). I do think MILK should have won Best Picture, it's a stunning piece and truly inspirational, plus it deserved to get the Oscar that Brokeback Mountain was cruelly robbed of a couple of years back... As always, politics reigns supreme in Hollywood!

I'm with you Don. Whilst i wanted Rourke to win, mainly because i like the bloke, Penn was better and i'd say Langella was as well.

Don't agree with Slumdog cleaning up either. It's a good film but i don't think it will hold up in years to come whereas some of the other nominees will age much better. I'm guessing in 2-3 years people will start saying 'how did Slumdog get 8?'

Cheers - I'd seen it mentioned but hadn't realised it was already released.

Slumdog wouldn't have been going straight to DVD because of quality in the US - but because of subject matter and subtitles.

And Martin McDonagh was robbed IMO - there wasn't anything that special about the writing in Milk. Even Brolin's breakdown seemed completely disconnected to what was going on as if he was in a separate film all to himself.

The Oscars is a load of shite. Every year I'm disappointed with the results and there's always an over-hyped, over-prasied film that undeservedly wins in all the maajor categories.

Penn and Winslet seem very much the December actor type, relase something around the end of the year, bag an oscar, Rourke was robbed, and so was RDJ for Tropic Thunder, but then the academy have no balls when it comes to this sort of stuff, did love Jackmans hosting though, anyone that works a Wolverine reference into a showtune deserves respect
