Since various predictions have changed and are all over the other thread interspersed with discussions and other stuff, is there any objection to me copy/pasting the final predictions from the thread to a single place - here? If anyone wants to change their prediction before tomorrow night I can just delete the post with theirs and they can replace it.

I so wish I had english TV here in Malta, been investigating around and it does not seem anyone will show the ceremony live. It'll be the first time I'll miss out

Working backwards through the thread.

RAWLINSON

Picture
Should win: Milk
Will win: Slumdog Millionaire
Should have been nominated: Cut everything except Milk and replace them with Wall-E, The Wrestler, Gomorrah and In Bruges

Director
Should win: Gus Van Sant - Milk
Will win: Danny Boyle - Slumdog Millionaire
Should have been nominated: See best picture

Actor:
Should win: Mickey Rourke or Sean Penn
Will win: Rourke or Penn. * Tosses coin* Rourke just takes it.
Should have been nominated: Strongest category of the year, cut Pitt for his oddly passive performance and replace him with anyone from Jeff Goldblum in Adam Resurrected, Michael Fassbender in Hunger, Leonardo Di Caprio in Revolutionary Road, Colin Farrell in In Bruges, Toni Servillo in Gomorrah or Benicio Del Toro in Che

Actress
Should win: Kate Winslet
Will win: Winslet
Should have been nominated: Cut Streep and Jolie and replace them with Kristin Scott Thomas and Michelle Williams. Also swap Winslet's nomination from The Reader to Revolutionary Road.

Supporting Actor:
Should win: Heath Ledger or Robert Downey Jr.
Will win: Ledger
Should have been nominated: Cut PSH and replace him with Brendan Gleeson for  In Bruges

Supporting Actress

Should have been nominated: A weak category this year, cut Viola Davis and replace with Misty Upham in Frozen River

Will win: Milk
Should have been nominated: Cut Happy-Go-Lucky and replace it with The Wrestler, Rachel Getting Married or The Visitor

Adapted Screenplay

Should have been nominated: Worst category of the night, IMO. You could cut every nominated screenplay and replace them with better films. Try any five of Wendy And Lucy, Revolutionary Road, Gomorrah, Che, Appaloosa, Adam Resurrected

Animated Film
Should win: Wall-E
Will win: Wall-E
Should have been nominated: Cut Kung-Fu Panda and replace it with Waltz With Bashir

Foreign Film
Should win: Waltz With Bashir

Best Film - Slumdog Millionaire
Best Director - Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire)
Best Actor - Sean Penn (Milk) I just feel he has the advantage over Rourke, being a well respected name and the performance being phenomenal in my opinion.
Best Actress - Kate Winslet (The Reader) There will be a lot of anger if she doesn't win, especially over a rather weak Streep performance.
Best Supporting Actor - Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) Same here. He created something truly special that will remain iconic.
Best Supporting Actress - Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) A great performance and my stand out from the nominated, Davis close behind.
Best Adapted Screenplay - Slumdog Millionaire
Best Original Screenplay - Milk (It deserves a big win especially with Slumdog taking the 2 main ones)
Best Animation - Wall-E

My list elab posted are my predictions. Here's who I feel should win and who should have been nominated:

SHBN - Waltz With Bashir (I would say the animation is more important than it being a foreign film or a documentary)

Art Direction
SW - Changeling
SHBN - Hellboy II

Cinematography
SW - Slumdog Millionaire
SHBN - Waltz With Bashir (not sure if animation is technically cinematography but the look of the film is stunning and unlike anything I've ever seen)

Costume Design

SHBN - Hellboy II

SW - Slumdog Millionaire
SHBN - Hunger

Adapted Screenplay
SW - Slumdog Millionaire

Should win: Slumdog Millionnaire
Will win: Slumdog Millionnaire
Should have been nominated: an awful lot of better films?

Director
Should win: Danny Boyle
Will win: Danny Boyle - Slumdog Millionnaire
Should have been nominated: See best picture

Actor:
Should win: Richard Jenkins
Will win: Frank Langella.
Should have been nominated: Colin Farrell/Brendan Gleeson in In Bruges, Toni Servillo in Gomorrah

Actress
Should win: Melissa Leo
Will win: Worrying. Are there enough apparently listening to the poor wee me campaign for Streep emphasising how long since she has won? On that basis I can only hope Winslet gets an undeserved Oscar for her lesser performance this year – she was far superior in Revolutionary Road – Winslet.
Should have been nominated: Kristin Scott Thomas I’ve Loved You So Long should not only be nominated but should have won.

Normally support are really strong categories but they are very weak this year with nominations for good acting but in roles that last barely minutes, or for roles that don’t deserve recognition at all. Unfortunately I think an unremarkable performance will win supporting actress.

Supporting Actor:
Should win: n/a
Will win: Heath Ledger
Should have been nominated: Eddie Marsan, Happy-Go-Lucky (and should have won)

Supporting Actress
Should win: From a poor selection Davis’s was the best performance but really not enough for a nomination, surely?
Will win: Henson – and if she does she’ll be one of the least deserving of the night.
Should have been nominated: Misty Upham in Frozen River or Elsie Zylberstein –I’ve Loved You So Long

Original Screenplay

Should win: In Bruges
Will win: Milk

Adapted Screenplay

Should win: Slumdog Millionaire
Will win: Slumdog Millionaire
Should have been nominated: I agree with Rawlinson here. Reader and Doubt are bad, Frost/Nixon isn’t even really adapted, and the link between Button and the story is virtually non-existent (not that it is good enough for original either). Revolutionary Road might have been in here for a brave attempt.

Cinematography
Should win: Slumdog
Will win: Slumdog
Should have been nominated: Numerous

Editing
Should win: Slumdog
Will win: Slumdog

Art Direction
Should win: Changeling
Will win: Changeling
Should have been nominated: Hellboy II

Costume Design
Should win: Revolutionary Road
Will win: Revolutionary Road

Make-Up
Should win: Hellboy II
Will win: Hellboy II

Did Button have make-up? If they mean Blanchett’s aging, it wasn’t that great.

Best Score
Should win: Slumdog
Will win: Slumdog

Best Song
Should win: Not a particular fan of any of them
Will win: Jai-Ho/Slumdog
Should have been nominated: Springsteen for The Wrestler/Elfman for Wanted

Sound
Should win: Slumdog
Will win: Slumdog

Sound Editing
Should win: The Dark Knight
Will win: The Dark Knight

Visual Effects
Should win: Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Will win: Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Should have been nominated: Hellboy 2 (and won, hell yes!)

Animated Film

Wouldn’t it be funny if Kung Fu Panda won? Wall-E is almost fatally flawed with suddenly trying to please the kids half way through (news from my nephew – it didn’t work). At least Kung Fu Panda is true to itself. Is Ponyo not eligible this year?
Should win: Wall-E
Will win: Wall-E

Foreign Film
Odd one really. I don’t think Bashir is perfect, and I do want to say The Class but I tend to think one of the reasons that Gomorrah wasn’t nominated relates to its similar storytelling to The Wire. And The Class kind of reminds me of S4 of The Wire and my head keeps telling me it will suffer for it. Still to see Departures which I can’t seem to find anywhere.
Should win: The Class
Will win: The Class.
Should have been nominated: From the longlist that I’ve seen Gomorrah

Documentary
Should win: Man On Wire
Will win: Man On Wire

Documentary Short

Guessing time
Will win: The Witness From The Balcony Of Room 306 (assuming this is something to do with the murder of Martin Luther King?)

Animated Short

I have only seen clips of La Maison en Petits Cubes and I think the whole might well be my winner. But, in lieu of that, and as Burn-E is better than Presto IMO
Should win: This Way Up
Will win: This Way Up

Should have been nominated – Burn-E

Live Action Short
Will win: Toyland

Somewhat inevitably this is a shoe-in being the Holocaust one.

Odd one really. I don't think Bashir is perfect, and I do want to say The Class but I tend to think one of the reasons that Gomorrah wasn't nominated relates to its similar storytelling to The Wire. And The Class kind of reminds me of S4 of The Wire and my head keeps telling me it will suffer for it. Still to see Departures which I can't seem to find anywhere.
Should win: The Class
Will win: The Class.
Should have been nominated: From the longlist that I've seen Gomorrah

I'm watching season 4 of The Wire at the moment and as soon as I saw the trailer for The Class I thought it looked pretty similar.

Dr. Horrible should be been nominated for Best Short Film.

Wouldn't that have been fantastic?

Wouldn't it be funny if Kung Fu Panda won?

No, because I would be forced to set fire to Sid Ganis' beard if a crime that abominable happened.

I honestly think there's a few way they could make themselves look ridiculous tonight. Wins for Kung Fu Panda, Streep, Frost/Nixon or The Reader are among them. Although some of the advance word coming out for the ceremony itself is indicating this could be a fuck-up on the scale of Rob Lowe/Snow White. Something about the ceremony having a narrative and rumours of Beyonce and Zak Efron singing. I really hope they're not true.

I read something about possibly Anne Hathaway coming out singing, too? Hopefully it is just because they've got a musical theatre presenter they are worrying too much.

I should possibly have considered a couple of other aspects for my choices though - it isn't just the Holocaustyness of The Reader that might get it votes - is sentiment for Minghella and Pollack enough to push it up the list too? Also - Lumet jr. Martin McDonagh should have walked that category. I'll understand if they give it to Milk as a bigger film (but using someone who isn't good at writing's speeches as a basis is a problem in the film IMO), but giving it to something as problematically written as Rachel can only scream nepotism.

Eddie Marson and Richard Jenkins deserve the BSA and BA award ahead of Ledger and Rourke/Penn/Langella? really?
and In Bruges deserves the BOS ahead of Milk/Wall-E?

Is that directed at me? (Apologies if not - I'm not the only one who has included those entries but I think I might be the only one with all in one go).

If so then yes. Really.

I think it's also part of Bill Condon's plan to revamp the Oscars. I want Dreamgirls Bill Condon to go away and Gods And Monsters Bill Condon to come back.

Yes. It also has the backing of Harvey Weinstein.

If Rachel Getting Married gets the screenplay Oscar I'll be astonished. Mainly because it wasn't nominated.

Why hasn't 'Gran Torino' (best film this year so far) been nominated for anything at the 2009 Oscars?

Should win best film, best actor (maybe) and best direction. I feel sorry for Mr. Eastwood - it's such a good film yet a lot of people won't see it or will be dissapointed by the 'Dirty Harry' comparisons. That and 'The Wrestler' show us we don't need big budgets to tell a good story.

4 stars? Up it!

P.S. Benjamin Button will win it all - Slumdog won't even see it coming (this isn't the Golden Globes).
