 A topic that has fascinated me from a young age - the existence of prehistoric animals in today's world - Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, Beast of Bodmin Moor, Megaladons etc etc. It's a constant source of fascination that despite all of today's technologies, any photos taken are always blurry and sonar and such are still unable to find Nessie... though it's probably just a large eel.

Anyway, this was in the Telegraph a few weeks ago.

I think this can probably be due to the fact that in the case of the photos any clear photos show an answer that is not a big-foot, etc. and it is only the blurry photos where viewers can go "oh yeah, that might be....".  Similar thing with the sonar, etc.  There is no Nessy so its more a finding that there is no such thing rather than a question of "why can't the technology find...?"

It's great fun, all a load of bollocks but great fun non the less. However I think things like the Tazmanian Tiger could still be about, albeit hidding in some forest somewhere.

As for the beast of Bodmin Moor pretty sure that their is a panther or two hiding around the English countryside.

 Like most kids as I child I was fascinated by dinosaurs, but I never believed there was one living in a lake in Scotland.

There are probably still some weird and wonderful creatures to be found in the depths of the oceans, but I really can't see there being a Skull Island out there.

I have also loved the subject from a young age. I remember reading books about people going to the Congo in search of living dinosauers and other subjects such as the Jersey Devil.

The great thing about the subject is that it isn't just about Nessie and her ilk. In the past decade something like 400 new mamials have been discovered and many more underwater species.

People who are into the subject and don't just believe ever story they are told, look for rational explanations for everything - because it is only after you have dismissed everything that is possible that you are left with the imporbable.

 ooooh cryptids!

There's a couple I'd love to know whether or not are real. Nessie's a given, but the Megalania would be awesome as would the giant anaconda. I'm inclined to believe that the anaconda might be around but the megalania I'm sure would have been spotted by now, a 40 ft lizard would find it hard to play hide and seek.

I always wanted to know what the fuck this was. This mysterious monster resembling a tadpole is actually a photo taken back in 1965 at Stonehaven Bay, Hook Island, Queensland. It was originally taken by a photographer named Robert Le Serrec. It was originally spotted by Le Serrec’s wife and estimated as about 30 feet long. However, when Le Serrec and his friend Henk de Jong went underwater to film it, the length is reported to have seemed to be about 75-85 feet.

That tadpole like photo has been outed as a fake, I'l try to find a link. I would love for Nessie to be true but I don't think so, if it's an air breathing reptile/mammal it should be seen more often as it would need to surface regularly to breathe and there has to be alot more than one for a breeding population. Bigfoot and the yeti are more likely.

I read a news story about the last Tasmania Tiger, it died alone in a concrete-floored cage. I felt really sad after reading it.

 It is all really fascinating. I watched a programme about that Giant Squid where they got the footage and it sent shivers down my spine. I love that the deep ocean has so many species that we're yet to see. I just hope that we discover some more in my lifetime.

 I don't think we can rule out the Tazmanian Tiger ( thylacene )yet...............I think there may be a few more knocking around................there has been a reputed Queensland tiger sighted for many years now ( a distant cousin, perhaps?)

I'd like to think Mkele Mbebe is knocking around the Congo. How much of that area is left to explore?

And look at the finds in the last century has been unearthed. The Komodo Dragon, the mountain gorilla, the king cheetah, the okapi, the giant panda ( 1937 !), the coelocanth ( 1938 ), Chacoan peccary, a marsupial doormouse..........there's many more to list........

 Great thread, Ti.  I'll need to have a look at all the articles/YouTube vids later.

Something that definitely fascinates me, as I always wanted to go out and find the mysterious "big cats" when I was younger (there are reports of one in the Pentland Hills, near where I live).

My thoughts are that it's definitely plausible.  Back in the 70s, there were quite a few privately-owned big cats probably released into the wild since their owners were not keen on paying extra licence fees to keep them - so it was cheaper to let them go!

I remember reading a book about "Kellas Cats" a few years ago now - interesting stuff:

One mystery kinda solved.

Regarding that mystery creature washed up on the beach - could well be a sealion, like the article suggests.  All kinds of weird and wonderful beasts have been turning up in the waters around the UK in recent years.

There was a show on where people went into that region and spoke to tribes men, they showed them pictures to try to get an idea of what the creature might be and the tribes men pointed to a photo of a hippo.

 I remember watching a documentary on Mokele-Mbembe although I'm sure the one I watched about lived in the Amazon basin, not the Congo....

There's a site here that wonderfully documents modern sightings of dinosaurs including them being mentioned in the Bible, which passed me by.

There is one thing that's always intrigued me - the fact that almost every country on Earth has a 'dragon' legend. That dragons seem to exist in every country's mythology....

 In the jungles of central Africa countries of Congo, Cameroon, and Gabon are reports of animal an animal with a long neck, a long tail, and rounded shape tracks with three claws. The closest known animal that has these characteristics is a sauropod dinosaur.
When some of the local people of the Likouala region would draw in the dirt or sand a representation of Mokele-mbembe they drew the shape of a sauropod dinosaur. Then when they were shown a picture of a sauropod dinosaur they said that picture is Mokele-mbembe.
Mokele-mbembe means "One that stops the flow of rivers." French priest in the region called it "monstrous animal."
Mokele-mbembe is also used as a generic term to refer to other animals like Emela-ntouka, Mbielu-mbielu-mbielu, and Nguma-monene.

OK. I have my pith helmet, a lot of rope, a large amount of beads ( apparently for trading, though I'm quite sure that my explorers handbook is woefully out of date! I'm sure a Blackberry or ipod is more the order these days.....) and a funny sidekick ( AKA bait ).
