This band has been one of my favourites since I first heard them in 2006 (yes, kill me now) and it's a shame that they have been so maligned by various groups for certain aspects of them that are unconventional.

This band is one of the few in recent years to have really captured the "rock 'n' roll" mentality: to do what you think is right, but doing it in your own way, unrelentingly. I adore them. Their songs are definitely the most headbangable I've ever heard, which is perfect for getting you pumped up for soemthing.

I think they are vastly underestimated and underrated, and I hope that their supposed "hiatus" ends soon, because I would like nothing more than to see a System Of A Down comeback, reinvigorated and angrier than ever. I will be buying a suit of armour.

My favourite album is their self-titled, very dark and haunting, and my favourite song changes constantly, but right now it's ATWA.

Any other System fans out there?

I've been a pretty big fan of theirs since the first album. I've seen them live several times including at the Brixton Acadamy when they first came over to the UK.

One of the things that impressed me about them in their constistancy. Every album sounds just as good and distinct as every other album, including the "b-sides" albums.

I bought Toxicity when it first came out, I think everyone did because of Chop Suey. But on that album my favourite song is Ariels. But ever since then my interest has faded.

Two great albums to start with, but after Toxicity it all seemed to go wrong.

My favourite track is probably Needles

I remember when they first came out, they were totally different to the normal "nu" metal that was around at the time. They still have a sound all of their own. Toxicity is by far and away their best album, on the debut the songs became a bit interchangeable after the first 4-5 songs. I love "Bounce" on Toxicity. Later on Daron's vocals became too prominent on the later albums. Oh, and they're great live! I don't see them returning from hiatus though, they're all doing their own things now.

I hold the first album and Toxicity in very high regard. But their last two albums sounded like Linkin Park with a social conscience

Nah, I'm sure their first UK shows were with Sepultura and Slayer at the London Astoria. They didn't impress me then and haven't all the way through their career. Like a Happy Shopper version of Mr Bungle or something.
When they headlined Download 2005 they were AWFUL. I have never since seen a band that really looked like they hated eachother and really didn't want to be there as much as SOAD that night.

My bad. It was 19th May 1999 and at the London Astoria (But they were headlining). My memory is failing me in my old age.

I use to love these guys but I have to agree wih Lydia that things seemed to go a bit downhill after Toxicity. There first few are incredible though. The get a bit preachy at their gigs though which can be a bit dull and Serj's book of poetry was just a bit much.

Apparently that song means NOTHING, but I have trouble believing that.

i'm a fan of SOAD and i do agree with the point that their recent albums haven't been up to the quality of Toxicity

i do like 'Radio/Video' off 'Mesmerize' though...

I thought mesmerize was awesome when it was first released although I've gone off it slightly since then. I still love Sad Statue off it.
I love the self-titled album, I think it's my favourite. I love WAR but i think my favourite is Darts. Just totally mental and balls-out.

Was listening to it earlier for the first time in years, what an album it was Not a duff track on it. Toxicity is good but it really doesn't have anything on the debut

Spiders, Suggestions, DDevil, War, Soil, Mind, Peephole, Darts ... all classic tracks. If Mezmerize/Hypnotize had one of those tracks they wouldn't be half as bad (Maybe)

Watching,
From a post up high

If you are the light post
Then you own the working class
But if you want the answers
You better give a piece of aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssss
Give a piece of your aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssss

Class.

My favourite SOAD lyrics are from Ddevil.

Plagiarized existence exist,
Among the writers of the word,
Shake your spear at Shakespeare,
Shake your spear at Shakespeare,

Loud and noisy,
Strong refrigerators,
Gaining independence,
Gaining independence,

Stupid people do stupid things,
Smart people outsmart each other,
Then themselves, then themselves,
Then themselves, then themselves,

Take me down there,
Photographic relapse,
People feeding frenzy,
The devil is so lovely,

My blue moon rivets in exits,
Forewarned customary spirits,
By myself, by myself,
By myself, by myself,

Take me down there,
Photographic relapse,
People feeding frenzy,
The devil is so lovely,

Take me down there,
Photographic relapse,
People feeding frenzy,
The devil is so lovely.

Heh, they come up with magical lyrics sometimes

Was listening to Steal this Album! earlier and it's not so bad, I liked it. Few godawful tracks but some real quality in there too. Wonder if I'm going to end up giving Mezmerize/Hypnotize another chance (Probably will)

I found that with Mezmerise/Hypnotize, as with many of these "double album" releases, if you strip away the filler there was one very good album in there. One day I'll get around to making a cd with the best bits on.

Inspired by this thread I listened to both Mezmerize and Toxicity today. While Toxicity has the better singles (Ariels, Chop Suey, Toxicity) and Mezmerize only has B.Y.O.B., I think that the rest of the songs are much stronger on Mez than they are on Tox.

That's why I think Mez is a better album. I just love Sad Statue, Old School Hollywood, Violent Pornography and Cigaro.

Re-reading the thread I'm surprised no-one has pointed out that the best song on the debut album is Sugar (and not suite-pee as people thought at the time).

And Radio/TV. Which makes my point that although it has less singles it is overall their best album.
