Not guilty, not in the slightest. It's no secret that I prefer this one to the original, I just fucking love that Dante was given complete control and just went completely crazy. It's one of the boldest films ever made, fucking with conventions, narrative, you name it. The puppet effects are better than those in the original, the story, spoofing all the horror classics, and even itself, is superb in it's lunacy. The brain gremlin is an awesome character, and the whole sequence involving mad scientist Lee in his nightmare lab is some of the funniest shit I've ever seen. Huge fan right here.

"The city so nice they named it twice! Go see it, one time, won't you?"

Brain Gremlin is comedy genius, "We've never been to New York before, theres the broadway shows, we'll have to find out how to get tickets, also I've heard theres also a lot of street crime but I believe we can watch that for free"

Awesome quote Brain Gremlin is fucking hilarious,

Brain Gremlin : "The niceties, Fred. The fine points: diplomacy, compassion, standards, manners, tradition... that's what we're reaching toward. Oh, we may stumble along the way, but civilization, yes. The Geneva Convention, chamber music, Susan Sontag. Everything your society has worked so hard to accomplish over the centuries, that's what we aspire to; we want to be civilized.

[a Gremlin with a beanie cap acts goofy next to Brain]

Brain Gremlin : "You take a look at this fellow here."

[Brain shoots the Gremlin in the head. The Gremlins in the bar laugh. Grandpa Fred and Kujitsu leave]

Brain Gremlin : "Now, was that civilized? No, clearly not. Fun, but in no sense civilized. Now, bear in mind, none of us has been in New York before. There are the Broadway shows - we'll have to find out how to get tickets. There's also a lot of street crime, but I believe we can watch that for free. We want the essentials. Dinettes. Complete bedroom groups. Convenient credit, even though we've been turned down in the past."

Gremlins 2 is a collection of funny and memorable scenes but there's no story tying it together. The main villain gets killed around 30 minutes before the film even ends!

No, it's a superb spoof of all the horror cliches, a jab at consumerism, a whirlwind of crazy ideas and slapstick par excellence, filled to the brim with creative splashes, exceptional puppet effects and characters infinitely more funny than those in the original. There's the overall story of Billy once again battling the Gremlins, but this time the stakes are much higher, granted, it is basically the story of the first, transported to a Metropole, but with ten times more creativity.
I absolutely love the fact that Dante would only do the film if he could go wild, and he did.
As for the main villain dying 30 minutes before the film ends, who are you talking about? If you mean the Brain Gremlin he dies along with a lot of the other when they are hosed down with water towards the end of the film.

The main villain is Spike, gets turned into a spider.

The first is a masterpiece, hope yoiu'll agree with that Kaz.

Spike, or Mohawk, is more of a right hand man in this one, granted, he is the leader at first, but gets replaced by Brain.

Yes, I love the first film, a wonderful piece of work as well. I've seen it so many times I can't even begin to count.

Favourite moments for me:

The Bat-Gremlin leaving the Batman symbol when he smashes through the wall, brilliant

Gizmo doing his little dance then trying to leg it away from Christopher Lee, love how he's inching his way towards one spot then hoofs it

The Rambo training scene, complete with Goldsmiths own score

The movie breaking down, depending on which version you're watching, postmodernism before its time

Robert Picardo, everything the man says is brilliant in this "Peltzer, you're having a pyschotic episode, thanks for sharing it with us"

Mohawk being a complete badass in this, torturing Gizmo (love the photocopying bit "Gizmo, Gizmo,Gizmo,Gizmo, mwhahaha!" then changing into a big spider with Slayer playing in the background, kids movie? pah!

Daffy " second floor, lingerie!"

The elevator gag "sound alarm" cue Gremlins doing alarm sound effects

oh too many to mention...

Yeah it's a fucking horn of plenty of zany antics and bonkers violence.  Love the bits you picked out.

quote:

Love that, Gizmo's so unbeliveably cute, but smart too  and Lee is so cool in this film,

"..And for that, my little friend, we'll just have to cut you.."

quote:

The Rambo training scene, complete with Goldsmiths own score

Superb, I love that some of Rambo's dialogue can be heard in the background as well, "To survive a war, you've gotta become war." Great scene where he makes the bow and arrow and the effects for Mohawk's demise are wonderfully disgusting

quote:

It's an intelligent piece of work, despite the lunacy, which I've been proclaiming for years I like the John Wayne bit better than the Hulk Hogan ditto.

quote:

Robert Picardo, everything the man says is brilliant in this "Peltzer, you're having a pyschotic episode, thanks for sharing it with us

Picardo is always superb, but when directed by Dante, he's even better. Love the bit at the end where the transsexual (shudder) Gremlin is throwing himself at him and he gives that look like, "oh, okay then." Fucking hilarious

Other favorite moments of mine,

The Marathon Man spoof, "Is it safe?"

The Gremlins turning Lee's lab into a warzone, small arms fire, total chaos. The arrival of the Brain Gremlin.

The whole interview Grandpa Fred does with Brain Gremlin.

The musical act.

The Leonard Maltin cameo.

I fucking love this film.

I agree it's an intelligent film, far more so than its reputation suggests, but postmodernism predates Gremlins 2 by a long time.

Ok. Btw, I think krudler meant it in a "before it was cool" kinda way.

Baudrillard thought Once Upon A Time in the West was the first post-modern film.

Quite strange, how? There was some pastiche in it but that's only part of post-modernism.

I don't agree with him 100% and I've never read a full essay from him on the subject, but I'm guessing he's talking about the way Leone deconstructs the mythology of the western in the film.

This film is a masterpiece of satirical cinema and one of the rare examples of a sequel equal to its original.

Not guilty.

I didn't notice this was in here til now.

I prefer the first film but the sequel is still great fun, not guilty in the least.

Guilty.

After the magnificent first film, Gremlins 2 is utter, utter rubbish.
