Recorded the extended edition from Film4 the other night - nearly 3 hours long! Cant believe how good it still looks - the alien design and puppetry really are wonderful.

The blu ray in particular is very nice looking, even though I am not a fan of certain scenes having the colour timing messed with. Could do without that Burke/daughter photo scene but don't mind the other additions.

A lot more entertaining than Alien in my opinion. More intense and action packed. I have the old UK special edition DVD release, which I am happy sticking with.

Awesome looking blu ray. I showed this to my mate the other day and he was bowled over by the quality of the picture and sound.

Rewatched this last night, what a superb movie and a true 5 star piece of film making IMO. I definitely prefer the longer cut for this. 2 hours and 31 minutes is a great length for this movie. It's funny though as that kind of running time would feel too indulgent on most other films like this, yet Cameron knows how to pace a movie. I find a similar thing with The Abyss, even with the longer cut, it doesn't feel too long.

I think it's more 'some things make it better, some things make it worse' with regards to the special edition. The preamble on LV-426 spoils the suspense, but I can't imagine watching it without the sentry gun scene now; it makes that whole section flow that little bit better.

I agree about the LV426 preamble. Perhaps the movie doesn't need that bit, but everything else is great. As you say the sentry gun scene and also Ripley's child, helping cement her later bond to Newt.

Then how do you explain Terminator 2? Also not the biggest fan of the Abyss, think it has aged really badly.

In what sense? How do i explain one of the best science fiction action movies made? James Cameron is an incredibly talented film maker with many excellent films under his belt. Fair enough if you're not much of a fan but i didn't realise Terminator 2 had any serious issues.

The Abyss is always better than I remember. Just recently I thought hey there's always something happening, and the way each problem comes along is for a good reason. It's just short of Aliens and T2 personally because the characters seem a little too much like cut outs at times. Aliens though, director's cut or not is pretty sublime.

The special edition of Aliens is vastly inferior to the theatrical cut.The latter is a leaner, tighter film wheras the special edition ( while still worth watching ) has that pointless section on LV426 before its overun by aliens ( complete with bad acting family ).The sentry gun sequence is cool by itself but its absence in the theatrcial cut makes the tension more explicit by the fact that they have very little weapons and ammunition left.

Also the Ripleys daughter subplot is too on the nose in the special edition.

Theatrical cut all the way.

I think its overrated. Not saying its not good, but I just think there are too many ideas, and that it is over long and baggy. The first one was much better in its pacing.

I know what you're saying. But I think Terminator 2 is a slightly different genre to its predecessor, which was basically just a slasher flick with a sci-fi angle.

The pacing in the theatrical cut is spot on, I think. Its the special editions that sag, especially in the pre-desert/desert scenes.

But you lose the scream fade out/cigarette edit and the electronic ball breakers scene! I can watch either version, since for a long time it was the only home release around.

Newt screaming when her father comes back with the alien attached has an edit where the wind sound gets louder and louder and cuts to Ripley smoking. Hudson's speech where he claims they can fry half a city with this puppy is also absent.

Alien and Aliens, the two movies that have always stood the test of time with me. Can watch them over and over.
