I've never really understood the need to compare Alien and Aliens, they are two different movies just with the same lead (and cat).
The one similiarity that runs through both of them is how you can't trust the company!
Also, Ripley's growth - in thef irst she was a by the book company gal who had to break her own rules to survive and sort of went to pieces at the end, in my opinion she became weaker - a neat twist on supposed characer growth where the protag usually gets stronger.
Then, in Aliens, she started out 'damaged' and became stronger by the end. She came almost full circle and testement to Cameron's great writing skills.
(apparently, he has great bo staff skills, nunchuk skills and magic skills too)

I'm kinda with Donnie Darko Nut from the previous page, whilst I love Alien and Aliens, Alien 3 is my most watched of all of them. I absolutely love it. I've said it before in other threads, probably Unpopular Opinion, but hands down if I'm looking for an Alien film to watch, it's Alien 3 (the assembley cut, of course). I love, love, love it. But I love em all, even Ressurection. Kind of.

I really like Alien 3. New characters and different situation, not merely a "Terminator 3 style re-run" of what happened before. Its original, fun and as violent with a whole range of awesome characters (if a little hard to tell apart). Great set design too. The only problem I have is that it came after Aliens, which was brilliant.

Resurrection is total shit though- That movie has dated so badly and looks so cheap its unreal.

The set design on resurection was great and the first half started out promising (Whedon) the abducted colonists as cargo, the Bettsy's crew (The Bettsy was a great ship) but everything after the point where Ripley gets all erotic with the Aliens and the pregnant queen giving birth to THE worst monster in cinema history was all the fault of Jean Paul Jeunet trying to inject french art house bollocks into the franchise. For crying out loud, he wanted the newborn to have genitals and to make love to Ripley!
Watch the extra's where Weaver and Jeunet are brainstorming ideas - I'll have a pint of whatever they're on.

Just watched this for the first time in years. I still love it but christ, I thought Hudson and Vasquez were irritating when I was a teenager - as an adult their annoyingness actually made me feel a bit nauseous. A prequel starring these cardboard, cringeworthy bozos would've killed the series a million times faster than Fincher and Jeunet's efforts.

Not the best performances in the world but I wouldn't call them cringeworthy or cardboard.
Baring in mind that Jennete Goldstein was English and Hudson was Paxton's first proper gig!

I think if you had marines again you would a) constantly compare them to the Aliens bunch and b) dilute what made them cool

It's not so much their peformances as the dated 'bad ass' dialogue they're both saddled with. Then again, I guess the marines are supposed to come across as cocky and overtly macho - it makes their demises (and the build up to Paxton's death when he's basically revealed as a whining pussy) all the more fun.
As for then being 'cool'. Hmm, maybe it's just me but even as a kid, Hicks and Bishop aside, I thought they were all basically arseholes who ultimately suffer as a result of their arrogance.
Still, none of this stops the film being utterly awesome.

Yeah, I think it was mentioned before about the dialogue and attitude of the marines totally setting them up for the ass kicking they get later. If they went in there saying "oh no we're gonna lose and we're gonna die" the drubbing they get wouldn't have been as shocking, even though we knew it was coming lol.
The dialogue is authentic for the time and compare it to nam' films and the dialogue of the soldiers in war movies and it fits. Plus the Nam' comparison was deliberate, they went in there to kick ass and got wupped!

having said that, there are two characters that make me cringe a little and I think it's the fault of the actors not the script - Spunkmeyer and Dietrich. When Apone is firing up the squad with the "are you mean!?" line, Dietrich makes me cringe for some reason.

I thought Hudson added a bit of comic relief, and Paxton does a sterling job ''why dont you put her in charge'' cracks me up all the time! as for Vasquez I dont have a problem with her, in fact I think shes cool! Personally, for me ALL the actors in Aliens are top notch. Aliens is the perfect sci-fi action fllick.

Hudson is perfect - the all mouth and no trousers guy. But then I like the whole ensemble.

His delivery of this line is superb, real terror coming through in his voice and coming from the "comic relief guy" gives it extra impact imo.

No, she's American. She just lived in England at the time because her dad was in the US Air Force.

Yeah, he was played by the wonderfully named Tip Tipping. He was a stuntman who's name I knew growing up (I was really into stunts) and I remember seeing it credited in shows like The New Statesman and movies like Batman and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (I used to read the stunts credits, I was an odd kid). Tipping sadly died in an accident in the early 90s.

Here he is talking to Johnathan Ross and doing something a lot of people wish they could do (at the 33 second mark)
