Finished tonight: John Adams Before he made the highly acclaimed Oscar winning The King`s Speech, English director Tom Hooper made this HBO-miniseries about one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America: John Adams. The 7 episodes of this series tell about 55 years of his life story (and ends on his and Thomas Jefferson`s dying day, July 4th 1826, the US` 50th birthday) in wich we see Adams (Paul Giamatti) grow from lawyer to revolutionary and second president of the USA. Even though he has to deal with a lot and has a lot of setbacks, in his work as well as in private, he firmly keeps holding onto his ideals and principles. The ideals and principles on wich America is built and still rests on today. Because there are only 7 episodes it does at times feels really rushed. Sometimes you wonder where and in what year you are. It wouldn`t have been a bad thing to spread it out over 9 or 10 episodes in stead of the 7 it has now. The makers also seem to rely on its audience having, even though there is a lot being explained, (a lot of) knowledge about the history of America. Personally I think it`s a must to know at least something about it. It is a very strong series and takes a lot of care in bringing details to the screen but at times it could`ve taken back a step pace-wise. But I did enjoy this look into the making of The Land of Possibilities. 9,0/10
