At least we'll get a proper end to the series now.

But Season 8 had decent effects and it just looked weird!

How did the last season end again? I remember Rimmer knee'ed Death in the groin and did a runner...

I honestly can't remember I just know it didn't have a proper ending as Doug Naylor wanted to finish it with the much mooted film.

So they go back to Earth? I think this will only work if Earth is like Rimmer predicted, the ants have taken over and that forces Lister to realise he had a better life in space so they go off again.

I heard about the "special" but didn't know it'll be no sets etc, so I reckon it's just an excuse for them all to improvise and have a giggle.

I love Red Dwarf and hope this will be a fitting end to the saga.

I've a feeling they shoulda just left it as it was.  The last two series were utter pap (as soon as they switched to CGI ships they were doomed) and the actors are all old and fat now.

I agree the CGI did hurt its appeal but I don't doubt the actors ability to perform, no matter how old or fat they are now.

They've been drifting around space for over three million years, they should age...although not sure about Holly...

I don't know about the actors looking old and fat, Craig Charles looks okay, Robert Llewelyn is in a suit anyway, Danny John Jules is still in good shape, and Chris Barrie is thinning a bit on top, but that's nothing the Ace Rimmer wig won't cover up ! Can't wait to see this.

I think people are worrying about the wrong things here. Its not important what the cast look like, how they perform or GGI ships, the real worry is that Rob Grant is once again not onboard. As anyone that has read his books will tell you he was the real talent in the Naylor/Grant partnership and its no coincidence that the series took a nose dive in quality when he left after completing series 6.

I was looking forward to this coming back but I just don't have faith that Doug Naylor can restore the glory days.

That's a very good point...but then its only two episodes...what could possibly go wrong?

oh i thought Grant was back :(
and i was hoping that they'd ignore series 7 and 8 cos thats what i've done.
i havent watched any red dwarf since the first time, my step dad introduced it to me and over a series of months we brought all the series and watched them all. we're due a re-run through it all though, it is quite simply one of the best shows ever.

Exactly! The 7th series was awful & I gave up halfway through the 8th & the blame lies at the feet of Naylor. Hopefully they will ignore the last two series & just have the boys in the dwarf, thereís no real need for continuity if its funny, alas I donít hold out a lot of hope but am looking forward to it all the same.

The ending:

Also, according to wiki, the 4 specials will be shown 10th-13th April.

I'm really looking forward to this, I've been a fan for many years . Perhaps Ace Rimmer will come back and save the day?

I just read the alternative ending - I think that would have been so much better than the ending they did use.

It'd would have set them back to how it should be and is much more fitting for Rimmer IMO.

I'm with this as well. I hate to say it but Red Dwarf had it's day and should be left alone. Look what happens when you try and resurrect legends like Only Fools and Horses and Black Adder even for just one 'special' episode. It simply isn't worth it.

Also, personally I think the CGI did hurt the series, the models had charm and were actually very effective for it's time. The CGI for Red Dwarf looked cheap even for TV standards and unless it has a Dr Who budget it's not worth attempting.

Well, there hasn't been any mention of Chloe Annett returning as Kochanski, so maybe it could be OK...maybe?

Having now watched the alternative ending for Only The Good I take back my statement of it possibly being a more fitting ending. Whilst I believe in concept it could have been better, the way it was executed wasn't nearly as good. Nevermind. Perhaps they'll do something similar to open the new shows.

Wow I was scared then for a minute! I thought the two new episodes would have no sets but it says that the special afterwards won't have any not the two new eps.

If Dave is paying money out for brand new sets ect... you think they'd be a new series if these two new episodes perform well in the ratings.

Probably not as there isn't a way for it to make money. But I suppose if it gets mega viewers and they bring out a DVD and that sells then maybe...never say never. If there's enough money to be made, expect it to be made.

Yes that is the Rovers Return in the background!!!
& this news doesn't bode well

So maybe this could be even worse than series 7 & 8!!
The only way it could work I suppose is if they land on 'our' Earth in which Red Dwarf only exists as a sitcom???

Exactly the same image of them with different backgrounds?
One hopes that's greenscreened and they weren't actually trying to recreate the same poses exactly, though on a set of a soap there's not much else to do.

You know the Eastenders one is fake right?

These pictures and snippets of information have drained all the excitement I had about these specials.

And whats with rimmers H? Rimmer was human when we last saw him

Dear God, it's Dimensions in Time all over again...

They actually look okay though, only Rimmer and Kryten look oldish. Might be fun to see the boys from the Dwarf onscreen one last time. Hope there's a decent explanation for the crossover though.

Thunderbird 2 was awesome. It should never have been mated with a car that has clip-on panels though!
