 To be fair Simon Pegg did retract what he said and apologised fairly swiftly after the incident.

As for flaming I think people should not be so naive as to the consequences when they express a direct opinion on Twitter. It's a public forum, and so they shouldn't be too shocked if there's a backlash of abuse, even if it's engineered. Some comments get attacked, others float past unnoticed. I'm not condoning it but a lot of people do really need to shut the hell up. Twitter, like so many places on t'internet, is a platform for arseholes, each one convinced that their opinion is more important than the next. One must use with caution.

 I've seen Noel Fielding and Robert Webb do that and for the most part, people tend to disagree with what they are doing. I can imagine maybe Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber doing that being a massive problem though. It's a shame it puts people off using the platform entirely as it is a wonderful way of interacting with people you would never normally interact with. And the conversation from people here is always fantastic to read.

There's a sad thrill in celebrities replying to you. Although, celebrities get excited too. Wil Wheaton, an (over)active tweeter was getting RIDICULOUSLY EXCITED yesterday because on the Sesame Street twitter feed Grover spoke to him. It was kind of adorable to watch.

And yeah, I hadn't been in this thread for ages, so I only just noticed you had posted your twitter handle.

If anything on the planet was going to get me to join Twitter, it'd be the possibility of talking with a Sesame Street character.

So I looked and didn't have a clue what was going on and didn't care about 90% what was being said. If Grover can't get me to care nothing will.

 I followed Wil Wheaton for a little while but I dunno, something just really irritated me about his style. I follow Joshua Malina who is incredibly annoying. All he does is tweet about his show and offend people and then tweets about how he offended these people and how much he doesn't care. I would unfollow him if I weren't so lazy.

I don't actually follow that many celebs, its mostly my friends, people from here and people I enjoy reading. Ian Rankin is a great tweeter and Absolute Radio send some funny tweets as well.

 I'm still fairly ambivalent about getting on the Twitter train myself. One one hand I got bored with Facebook fairly quickly but on the other hand that's mainly because most of the celebs I was following on Facebook had started fucking off to Twitter by the time I got onto Facebook.

 People get annoyed when comedians aren't funny on twitter. Shappi Khorsandi tweeted the other day someone asking her why she doesn't tell jokes. Her response: come to my shows for the jokes; twitter is for wittering. Which is valid. Why give out jokes for free if those jokes are your livelihood? On the other hand, some comedians are funny on twitter too.

The celebrities who "get" twitter are the ones who don't just promote their shows, films, etc, but the ones who engage and converse. Shatner is pretty great - great swathes of his tweets are him replying to mentions, which might get tiresome, but how amazing to talk to Capt Kirk?!

I don't follow many celebrities myself. Or parody accounts. @michael_haneke is the perfect hybrid of both tho.

I use twitter mainly for social reasons (and to promote my work). As was said earlier upthread it's essentially taken over from these forums as my immediate port of call for online social networking.

This is why I couldn't go on Twitter, because if you said that on Twitter my automatic response would be to question exactly when Shappi Khorsandi has ever been funny. Then I'd be attacked by her followers.

Oh good - I thought it was just that I couldn't find you on it. Good to know it's all your fault.
