so, did anyone see it?
i absolutely loved this movie, plus it has one of my favourite actors-Konstantin Khabenski, and yes before anyone asks i have seen him in lots of other films too...

I especially love the fact that it's a low-budget film, and yet they made it so spectacular.

Yes, pictures would be cool. Especially if they're of Kostya (Aleksei Chadov).

Anything to keep you poor, lost, unable to watch the film yet people happy!

I've had a better idea. If you want to see more scenes from the film, and in a much better size than anything I can realistically put on here, then go to the Russian site - www.dozorfilm.ru.  It is all in Russian, which your browser may not read, if what comes up is lots of vowels with accents abover them it's not reading the cyrillic script, so select encoding in the view menu of your browser and choose Cyrillic (Windows), and wait for the page to reload with Russian letters.  Then, choose the first (furthest left) option on the menu across the top - the first letter is a bit like a greek theta, if that means nothing, a circle with a vertical line through it.  Russian F, and the word ends in M, an Russian M is the same as ours, so you'll see it no problem.  (Don't confuse it with the far RIGHT option it says Forum, not Film) Click on that, then choose the middle option of the three that appear on the left of the screen, the one that begins with K.  After that you'll be fine on your own.  There are maybe about 40 different screen shots there.

does anyone have any idea when the second film is going to be released over here? It's bad enough waiting for the DVD

Just to say that the Region 5 DVD is out now, and apparently without English subtitles this time (Night Watch Region 5 has English subtitles).  Will buy it and check in the next few days, but had a look in the shop yesterday, and could only see Russian for the Hard of Hearing.  Wonder if Fox don't want to lose revenue!!  Am I cynical?

I must be in the minority here, because I found Nightwatch to be a huge disappointment after seeing it at the London Frightfest last year. I have not read Sergei Lukyanenko's original novels so maybe that adds to the overall confusion everyone, including me, in the audience felt throughout the film. I'll give the script some credit - its some of the most elabrorate storytelling I've ever experienced, but soon it becomes an unbearable drag that sucks the life from a story intended to be exhilaratingly epic.

I'll also credit Bekmambetov's directing who successfully mimics the hyperactive style of many Hollywood studios, which is pretty good considering the film's relatively low budget. However on the other hand it highlights the superficiality of the film - with the lack of real depth to the story. It concentrates most of its energy on the "wow" factor of its bleak, gritty Moscow and its protagonists' vampire powers. Don't get me wrong, a few of the scenes are really entertaining (the mirror battle, truck somersaulting in the street, the climatic fight where Zavulon uses his spine as a sword) but overall its a case of seen all of this many times before.

Here's hoping DayWatch will be slightly more coherent for those not accustomed to Sergei Lukyanenko's novels!

Day Watch is certainly more comprehensible without a knowledge of the books (given that it virtually ignores them!).  It is also not a horror film, if that is what you are looking for, you'll be disappointed.  UNless the though of the destruction of Moscow gives you the shivers, in that case you'll love it!  They had a lot of fun with the SFX there!
