Weather it turns out to be the best year at the cinema remains to be seen, however I certainly intend it be the best year yet for this thread.  It was a blast last year, and with just two days of 2009 gone it is time to start the list of your Top Ten cinmatic releases of the year.

Just a Few rules: Please just include new films released at the Cinema over the next twelve months, special screenings of old films do not count, a film you watch in January, but was released at the back end of 2008 should not be included, as for Festival screenings, the film in question can be included as long as it's coming out in the UK this year.

Now that the boring stuff is out of the way it's time to look forward to a very intriging 12 months at the pictures.  This month alone contains much to wet ones mouth(and plenty to make you hang your head in shame to be fair) just this week we have Films like Che Part 1(some of you lucky sods, or unlucky depending on how it turns outmay already have viewed both parts) and the Reading with kate Winslett and Reifh Feinnes, also later in the month theres Danny Boyles Slumdog Millionaire, The Wrestler and Frost and Nixon amongst others.  Enjoy the year let the madness start here!

1) Gran Torino (Clint Eastwood) 6/10

Although well acted and directed, Eastwood's other Oscar fodder film is often too sentimental for it's own good and, by extension, loses it's respectable realism in the second half.

1. The Spirit 1/5  - This year's Speed Racer.

So it's filled with fantastically shot race and action scenes, uses inventive editing, a clever plot structure and amazing visuals but it bogged down in some dodgy attempts at humour and emotion?  ¬_¬

What a crap start to the year, I can't believe this has to start in Number 1 place.

1. The Spirit 1/5  - This year's Speed Racer.

So it's filled with fantastically shot race and action scenes, uses inventive editing, a clever plot structure and amazing visuals but it bogged down in some dodgy attempts at humour and emotion?  ¬_¬

No. Just Shit.

1. Role Models (Wain) - 7/10
Consistently funny, if never hilarious, Role Models is on first glance a film from the Judd Apatow stable, which it isn't despite sharing some of the same cast members. Paul Rudd - one of my favourite actors - is on top form, as is Christopher 'McLovin' Mintz-Plasse. Seann William Scott plays his typical Stifler role, but his 'little', Bobb'e J. Thompson, almost steals the show. The ending is excellent, as are a number of sequences. Not as funny as many of the Apatow films however.

2. Yes Man (Reed) - 6.5/10
An enjoyable enough comedy that has Jim Carrey on the kind of form that reminded me of Liar Liar, Yes Man has a good premise that is somewhat let down by the romantic aspect of it - but how can you make a film like this without a romantic sub-plot? This is through no fault of either Carrey or Zooey Deschanel, however. Rhys Darby (Flight Of The Conchords' manager, Murray) steals the film with a gormless performance as Norm, and Terrence Stamp shows up as some crazy mantra dude. A couple of laugh out loud moments, but an all round amusing film.

3. Defiance (Zwick) - 6/10
An overlong and occasionally boring film that has a couple of flashes of excellence, Defiance tells the true story of the Bielski brothers, who led a group of Jewish resistance fighters during WW2. Daniel Craig is good enough in the lead role, as is Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell in support, but occasionally their accents slip and the acting around them isn't up to scratch. Too many shots of Daniel Craig coughing and some almost inaudible speech makes this film a wasted opportunity.

The Spirit - 4/10

Not Miller's usual method of filming, which leads to sadly his worst film of is filmography. Lacking any real story or backbone, the spirit remains a character that the view simply doesn't care for, and as for the octopus, i spent most of the film wondering when the bad guy would turn up. It also didn't have the same Noir effect as sin city, which i was really hoping for

...his usual method of filming?  The guy has never directed a film before!  He might have been given co-directing status on sin city because they followed his comic panals to a T and he was on the set each day, but he is not a director and has never directed a film before, saying this isn't his usual method of filming makes no sense.

Actually the first film I saw this year was last year's Australia which I really liked and would be a four and a half star movie in my book.  Anyway, with brief reviews in the 'reviews' section
1/ Slumdog Millionaire ****1/2
2/ The Reader ***1/2
3/ Defiance ***

Not sure I can be bothered with The Spirit as I didn't think much of 300 and loathed Sin City.

Sorry to be a nitpick but Australia is surely 2008 - not only the IMDB date but also UK release date!

New number 2 today (though I suspect not for long) - Defiance. A film which is never as remarkable as its subject matter but nevertheless entertaining.

True, but it only managed to reach a cinema near me in the New Year. I'll keep it in for now until the list's a bit longer.
