I'll admit I'm not the biggest fan of the second one, but at least it retained the darkness of the first movie, although they should have kept the plot going about Murphy trying to regain his humanity by contacting his wife, I mean that's done and dusted in the space of the first ten minutes and was an incredible waste if you ask me, but in saying that, Robocop 2 is a masterpiece compared to the future installments of the franchise. 3 is more or less a pilot for the television series what with its child character and almost juvenile plotting. It's terrible beyond belief, personally I think it and the television series (tellingly broadcast on ITV on Saturday afternoons when it was shown) should be buried in the biggest hole imaginable along with a nuclear weapon and left to be annihilated to it can never be inflicted upon any unwilling humans again.

The third one really is a stinker, huh? Unbeliveably stupid, amateurish and embarassing..Miller's intentions and usual sensibilities totally removed or warped to unrecognition.

I still remeber the last line of a review by a German film critic when RoboCop 3 came out:

"A film like an electric tin opener: technically sound an of an equal entertainment value!"

Ah Robocop, ever watchable. Anyone seen these making of type docs? See this youtube channel for a few cool interviews:

http://www.youtube.com/user/rcarchive#p/u/11/6jr57D9ZYBs

This may be on a certain DVD somewhere, but not the one I have which only has "Flesh and Steel: The making of Robocop" and nothing with the actors or about the effects

There is a 30 min. doc on the German "Cinedition" DVD of RoboCop called "Special effects - then and now" which deals with the matte paintings and the stop motion used in the film. I don't know if its on other editions as well.

And all the quotable Robo lines:

"thank you for your co-operation, good night" to the owners of the store getting robbed

"come quietly or there will be........ trouble!" to the occupants of the drug factory

"dead or alive you're coming with me"

"your move, creep" after shooting a rapist in the nuts

"stay out of trouble" - to the schoolkids

GOING TO WATCH IT TOMORROW!

All of the commercials in this film make me laugh - especially....

"It's Back! BIG is back! 6000 SUX - An American Tradition"

I always think there may be a wee piss-take there, I mean are they actually saying 6000 SUCKS?

Great movie.
Second one isn't bad-anything else-erase from memory!
Really defined the glorification of violence in the late 80s/early 90s in cinema.
I loved it.
KickAss was the most fun of this type since.

Yeah love this film. Didn't see it until the early 90's but a mate told me all about it and I watched it round his house stopping the video every time his mum came in the room.

Just love the satire involved especially in the adverts; Nukem, 6000 SUX and the Magnavolt one in the sequel (doesn't even run down your batteries!).

Also, love the way that Johnson stays out of trouble while other execs get blown away around him. You just know theres someone like that in the world.

Peter Wellers never been better, neither has Nancy Allen (sexy as hell when shes blowing that bubble) and Miguel Ferrers death scene is genuinely moving even if he does kind of have it coming.

Great stuff. The sequel is crude in the extreme, but it does have some bright spots.

I couldn't resist.

As noted elsewhere, the satire in the first Robocop film was brilliant and in particular I like how it warned of mass-privatisation, the homogenity of corporations and corporate greed. Even Detroit City's police force were owned by O.C.P! There's also themes of mass industrial decay (Detroit  was once the backbone of America's industry), unemployment, crime and poverty too.

I have the original four-issue series of ROBOCOP vs. THE TERMINATOR - cool stuff but would probably never work as a film.

You going to watch District 9 soon? It has the same sort of feel as Robocop and Verhoevens other sci-fi.

Haha Verhoeven is a nutter, always talking about Robocop as "Jesus vs Satan", you can see him on some documentaries about this where he's enacting ED-209 for the live action cast to react to - complete with sounds effects

23 years later and its still great.Damn i wish Verhoeven would come back to Hollywood and make more big budget blood spattered sci-fi.Then again, the studios probably wouldnt let him as they would no doubt demand a PG certificate
