 As James Bond is an established character with a back story, changing his race, gender, etc. just strikes me as unnecessary. Doesn't mean that writers couldn't write a script for a black secret agent, or a female secret agent, or a Asian secret agent or whatever, though.

 I don't understand a lot of reaction on this thread.

I am not saying "Bond should be Black" but I wouldn't have a mjor problem if he was. As I posted earlier if the most appropriate actor is black then so what?

No changing what he drinks or chaning his attitude or whatever.  It still has to be Bond.

Yeah, why not?  Sikhs fought and died for the British and remain one of the most distinguished warrior groups in the world.  Of course, a Sikh Bond would probably be so badass that the conflict of the movie would basically be reduced to zero.

 Why would there ever be a need to change the characters origins?

It doesnt need updating, nor can i ever see the need to changing. His back story and the character is well established.

Changing it would just be a gimmick and serve no other credible purpose IMO.

 Wouldn't it be better to create a black character who could potentially become an iconic figure themself rather than simply changing the race of a pre-existing character who was already carrying a lot of baggage behind it. Of course this would mean creating a character who was not tied in to popular culture and could seem, to a degree, timeless which does not seem to be something which is often done for black characters which sadly means they do date quite rapidly.
