But then Django has rarely been played by the same actor. In fact he's even more rarely been the same character.

You mean, kinda like Bond....

I see your point, and agree fully, Django does prove that it would be okay for a black actor to play Bond. Nice work!

Is it the same person or just using a character name? is the 'Django' in Django Unchained the exact same character as in Django the original movie like James Bond is (don't know not seen either)

There's a lot of unofficial sequels to the original Django (as well as an official one). It's a little like a hyper-version of the relationship between the EON Bond and Never Say Never Again.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Django_(character)

The legalities of the situation aside (the Django brand name is one that has been massively abused over time) I actually think the Bond/Django franchises are quite similar, in the way that one group of films might contradict another.

How about Dave Benson Phillips as Bond?

Or how about Danny Dyer? Or Peter Simon? Or Adrian Chiles? I don't understand how suggesting a ridiculously inappropriate figure of any ethnicity is supposed to discredit the ultimate point.

To be fair, it's a really boring joke, due to the fact that "[insert name of inappropriate black actor] as Bond" has been done to death in this thread. We're a long way from the dizzy heights of horse-Bond.

Probably because the producers don't want to work with Snipes anymore - he was allegedly quite difficult when they were shooting the last one.

I think Fassbender should be the next Bond.

Not sure whether he should be blacked up though.

No, nothing like Bond at all. The only actor to have played Bond once in the films is George Lazenby. The only actor to have played Django more than once (and then only twice) is Franco Nero. The Django films are NOTHING like Bond - despite being played by several different actors who have given the character of Bond different readings and nuances, there is no doubt that it is nevertheless the same character in the same world with the same background. Apart from the original Django and its direct sequel, the only thing the Django films share is the character's name, and 9 times out of 10 this was only in English speaking territories where the character name was changed to cash in on it. Otherwise the characters and backgrounds are completely different in every single Django film. You could argue they share a basic revenge premise, but then that is the case for most westerns.

Then Luther should be played by Ray Winstone, of course.

Or Tamer Hassan, but then that would mean Danny Dyer would have to be in it anyway as well.

I completely agree 100% - I can't imagine anyone else playing Luther.

My point was that people are saying in this thread "why can't a black actor play Bond", with a couple of unfounded accusations of racism to those who say (factually correctly) that Bond was written as a white character and he should therefore remain a white character. My suggestions of Ray Winstone, Danny Dyer or Tamer Hassan playing Luther in a film highlight that point - there is nothing which makes Luther a "black character" so, on paper, there is nothing to say why he shouldn't be played by Winstone, Dyer or Hassan (aside from the fact that Winstone isn't very versatile, and Dyer and Hassan are just shit). But Luther can only be played properly by a black actor with a lot of screen presence. Idris Elba fits the character like a glove.

By the same reasoning, I can't imagine anyone other than a white British actor (or at least an actor who can do a faultless English accent) playing Bond.

I appreciate that Luther can ONLY arguably be played by Idris Elba and no one else, so it is slightly different, however it illustrates the point...

I would love it Eon all took drugs, lost their motherfucking minds, and cast Dyer as Bond.

That would be spectacular.

Of course, and I think the Dyer suggestion actually leaves us in a good place: skin colour, species or ethnicity aside, some people just aren't right for Bond, be it Eddie Murphy, Redrum or Danny Dyer.

...I hadn't thought of that...

And, actually, as I've said before in this thread, I don't really care cos I'm not a Bond fan.

...but Danny Dyer. I think if I were to ever be involved in making a biopic about Danny Dyer, I would not hire Danny Dyer to play Danny Dyer. Cos he's shit.

I'd probs hire.............Patterson Joseph to play him. Or a horse. Or Yaphet Kotto.
