What you're saying there is pretty much exactly what I've been saying and you've been disagreeing with. That to bring in a black actor you'd have to reboot the character again and break away from current continuity.

You're oversimplifying my point. It all depends where they go with the next film. If they make a direct sequel to Skyfall (ala what QoS was to CR) then it would be a problem, in the same way that it would be were ANY OTHER ACTOR of any ethnicity to take over the role. If it's a case of a completely separate film, say as The World Is Not Enough was to Tomorrow Never Dies then I don't think it would be an issue at all. A soft reboot if you will. A reboot by proxy solely on account of the fact that a new Bond is in town. To be fair I did shoot myself in the foot with the poorly chosen example films, my point would have been better served if I hadn't cited films that were the first for their respective Bonds.

No it's not. It's a bit like saying Peter Jackson could have cast Lord of the Rings with black hobbits. Of course he could have. But he didn't because it would have been daft.

For the record, saying that James Bond is, was, and should be a white character is not racist. Its clear that the character was written as a white man by the author - end of.

I think this debate is largely one held by white people: I doubt very much if the vast majority of black Bond fans give a crap.

There's a part of me that thinks that changing the character to be black is really rather patronising and probably more racist than saying its a daft idea to make a white character black for no particular reason.

Are you saying that black screenwriters and authors can't come up with a viable black hero, they have to appropriate white ones? No, of course you're not. It's really infuriating reading this thread and watching people tip-toe around the word "racism" because someone throws out an idea and then resorts to barrack-room lawyer tactics to label anyone that doesn't agree with that idea a racist.

So ultimately, it seems to me that this whole debate is no longer about a black Bond at all - its about different people's - on this forum's - views on what is racist and what is not.

James Bond is a fictional spy who works for the British secret service.

Britain is made up of white people, black people, asian people, mixed race people, eastern european people and lots of people of various ethnicity's some of whom work for the secret service.

Ergo there is not a single logical reason that Bond can't be played by a black man.

If Daniel Craig hits the sunbeds too much and ends up with a dark tan before the filming of the next film should he get his contract cancelled and a new whiter actor brought in? Of course not, the melanin content of a person skin should not in any way define whether or not they can pretend to be a spy in a movie.

I know the answer to the problem, and it's an answer everyone will be happy with because it keeps both camps (all of us who are racists and those who aren't [but might be a little bit homophobic])...

Who said if you prefer a white Bond you're a racist?

Bond being gay would be a step too far in my opinion with him being the typical red blooded male action hero the fans love. You can reduce this argument as much as you want be spouting nonsense like "if he can be black, why can't he be a woman" "if he can be black, why can't he be a midget" "if he can be black, why can't he be a horse"

The fact of the matter is the colour of a persons skin is not in anyway a big deal.

Ok so everyone has ignored this so I'll ask again.

Whereas you're more than likely to just be rather insensitive. But I fail to see how the analogy is relevant here in this thread. You're saying it's okay to prefer a white Bond but not okay to discuss why in case a black person reading the thread might be offended? Correct me if I'm wrong. Are you saying that you're black and that's why you find these posts offensive, even just the sarcastic ones?

My endless annoyance with Americans trying to label a language-group as varied as Hispanics as one thing or race.

Oh and Black Dynamite has already been in a Bond film. Somehow. It was actually an episode. He beat two of them. Kinda.

No not at all, Of course people are free to have their own preferences. There was a lot people saying that a black man can't be or shouldn't be Bond because of heritage or something.

He's been played by like 6 different actors already and I found it a bit ridiculous that some people seemed so offended at the thought of a black actor taking a turn.
