OK, I can forgive this list a lot for including Peter Venkman and Ed from Shaun of the Dead, but there are a lot of problems with it.  Tyler Durden at #1, and Charles Foster Kane at #98??!!  My personal choice for #1 would have been Vito Corleone, who's at #10, but other good choices for #1, such as Atticus Finch or ET, are much farther down the list.  And it's rather absurd to have two Harrison Ford characters in the top ten.  Maybe Han Solo deserves to be in the top 100, but not the top 10 -- and I wouldn't have included him at all if Obi-Wan Kenobi was omitted.

Most disappointing of all, though, is the omission of Sean Astin's Samwise Gamgee, especially considering that Viggo Mortensen's Aragorn is included.  Remember, this is supposed to be a list of great movie characters, not literary characters.  No way does Mortensen's profoundly mediocre portrayal of Tolkien's exiled king deserve to be included on any list of the greatest movie characters of all time.

I don't know why people get upset about these polls anymore. When it comes to the general public voting the Star Wars geeks and the L.O.T.R saddos jump on in their thousands. I have no problem with it, at least one character from both trilogies (and I think we all agree, even though i'm not a massive fan, that Star Wars IS only a trilogy) will be in the Top Ten. Other than that, its only 100 characters. I think we can all provide a top 500 characters each and come up with totally different lists. I think its ok as lists go. Although I am a little upset that Raoul Duke from Fear and Loathing isn't in there....

So I haven't bothered to read all the comments.  This may have already be pointed out.

There are, if i'm not mistaken, 12 female characters.  I don't know if this is because the film industry is sexist and creates less amazing female characters, or because a majority of those who made this list are male.

Either way, I would add the following to the list.  Also, independant films should not be ignored as there are some truly amazing characters there.

- Thelma and Louise
- Marjane from Persepolis
- Gogol from Namesake
- gogol's mother from Namesake
- If we were counting firefly the series, i'd add Nandi from "heart of gold" as well as Saffron from "Our Mrs. Reynolds"
- Marla from Fight club
- Olive and her grandfather from "Little miss sunshine"
- Guido from "Life is beautiful"
- Hedwig from "Hedwig and the angry inch"
- Jesminder from "Bend it like Beckham"
- Janet from "Rocky horror picture show"
- Scarlett O'Hara "Gone with the wind"
- Blanche Dubois "Streetcar named desire"
- Holly Golightly "Breakfast at Tiffany's"
- Sally from "Nightmare before Christmas"
- Clementine from "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind"

That's all for now.

Peace out

This is a movie magazines forum bud,the whole point of the forum is to converse on all things movie,in this case how crap the list was.Why would we talk about the economy or politics when we're here for escapism?Maybe you're on the wrong site,or if you don't like the grumbling, check out the forum on how great Twilight is or something.

Hey CoxintheBox,

In my own defense, I was merely trying to stir the pot a little!  Reroute the conversation, if you will.  ...wanted to see if anyone actually reads the other postings, or if all the bitching falls on deaf ears?   ...didn't really intend to offend, it was just a sweet bonus (kidding).  I apologize, profusely.  I actually consider myself to be the dictionary definition of a "film geek".  I just wish people would keep things in perspective, a little!  It's not as though Empire's list truley determines anything.  There top 500 films list was equally as subjective.  It's like taking the academey awards seriously!  Everyone here gets their knickers in a knot, complains adamantly and then puts up a (no-particular-order) list of characters that were criminally omitted!  Very few people actually have an intelligent analysis or critic (yourself included).  Case in point ; a guy representing himself with an image of "Spiderman" thinks he's cute by telling me to check out web forums on the film "Twilight".  Explain to me the fudamental artistic diferences between those two movies, please.  I'm pretty sure they share the same target audiences (but I digress).  Bring on the grumbling!

(your arch friendemy) Tres 'the devil's advocate' Styles

PS - Sam Raimi's a sellout! (take that!)

Where is Holly Golightly? Dignan? Spicolli?
I agreed with many many of these pics, but I had to laugh about Gross Point Blank, Wall-E and a few others. Some movies/characters had a real impact on our culture and others really didn't.

I just came across this site and have not read all the the posts but,#62 with Natalie Portman was not named LEON. The title of that movie is THE PROFESSIONAL with Jean Reno. Also Rutger Hauer most memorable role was that nut in the original HITCHER.

The name of the movie is Léon. That's what it was called in its country of origin, and the UK to boot.

I find it disturbing how many psychopaths have been chosen as favourite characters. Not all at the high end of the list but a significant shift from the top 100 stars and their iconic character from about 10 years ago. I can appreciate a well played character of any type but it seems a significant love of the killer, the powerful and the violent.

A good Top 10, not sure about The Joker at No.3 though (wouldn't have made the Top 30 if Heath Ledger hadn't snuffed it)

Well said
The Dark Knight wouldn't have done nearly as well if he never died

I Really dont have any complaints about the list, i just think they should have had Mclovin form Superbad on there, he was a original and great character from one of the funniest movies ever.
