I think the lesson we learned is that people need to look at cinema before Star Wars. Cinema was around a good 80 years before that film came out.

Still three of my choices made it; Marge Gunderson, Harry Callahan and Mary Poppins. Harry Lime didn't make it but Citizen Kane did so that's ok. However I also voted for Charlie Chaplin's the Tramp and I'm not sure if this counted as a character or a persona. Anyone from Empire care to shed some light?

Great job, Empire, for taking the time and the effort to count all the votes and compile this list. Tyler Durden for #1 is a great choice (my #2). My favorite, Travis Bickle, could have been higher, but doesn't everybody think that way about their #1-choice?

I do like to repeat a previous quesiton: is there a summary somewhere?

Probably the best "greatest movie characters" list ever. But what about Norman Stansfield???

overall i would say that the list had the majority of the characters in it that i expected, just the order was a bit messed up some times, seriously tyler durdan at #1?

i would say that i expected Leon, Deckard, the Predator, and Holly Golightly to be in the list

Love the list Empire, but a few things

There are three animated characters! Not two
Buckbeak isn't a griffin!
How could Jigsaw make the list, but no John Doe?
And no Benjamin Braddock!? The Graduate!
I think Durden is great, but no one touches Indy.

But great list.

Why is Jack Sparrow still so high in these kind of polls, I thought it was common knowledge (as if 2 awful sequels weren't enough to prove it) that he's actually a bloody annoying, paper thin charicature....

Unlikely, since only Americans can vote in those elections and the majority of Empire's readership are (Presumably) English.

I believe I'm one of few people who can say I've done both.

As an Empire subscriber and avid filmgoer, I'm ashamed of many of my fellow Americans eating up garbage like People and Entertainment Weekly, when Empire provides brilliant analysis of everything one could want. They of course haven't heard of Empire. I'm not sure how the British government works, but perhaps these are the same people who elected Gordon Brown?

There'll always be great discussions, why him why she not, ...
Everyone got his favorite, you only can hope your favorite ones you send in are in the 100. If you did not vote it's your mistake.
There a lot of great characters as : Johnny Stabler ( The wild ones ), Kid Shelleen ( Cat Ballou ), Lintulus Batiatus ( Spartacus ), Ransom Stoddard ( The man who shot liberty Valance ), Rose Sayer ( The African queen ), ...
One of my favorites is not in : Chris adams ( The magnificent seven ) and Yul once again as King Mongkut of Siam ( The king and I ), etcetera etcetara etcetera....
Too many too many and even I have forgetten a lot of them.
NEED A TOP 1000
Frankly my dear who gives a ....discussion.

Very good list but where was Dirk Diggler? He's a brilliant character, yes I might be bised to fancy the pants of Mark Wahlberg but why wasn't he there? Oh well, I am glad that Patrick Bateman and The Joker appeared on the list, cracked up when Napolen Dymate was there and Ed! Nice work, Empire, for only one disappointment but in all good stuff!

I really don't see the point of bitchin to Empire about how u hate the list....People voted it, not empire. So if u really hated it the list blame the voters, not the messengers.

That said, I like this list. Glad to see that most of my favourite characters made it onto the list (the 5 i voted for made the list but I had a bout another 20 in my mind).

btw I'm personally glad Donnie Darko made the list, Love the fact the The Joker is so high up because it is in a very deserving place and agree the Ripley deserved her spot as well. It is unfortunate that so few female characters made the list (I don't think the total count made it to double digits) but enjoyed the list nonetheless.

This poll highlights how some of the most original and dynamic movie characters still receive no recognition, not only in this poll, but also in the movie industry. Characters such as Blake (Glengarry Glen Ross), Stansfield (Léon), Drexl Spivey (True Romance) and Harmonica (Once Upon A Time In The West) are some of the greatest characters in movie history and have also been the greatest work for each of these actor's careers. Yet none of them came close to receiving an Academy Award nomination!

No Harry Lockhart from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang?
C'mon! He's effortlessly cool and is probably the wittiest character this side of the millennium.

A very enjoyable top 100! Loads of surprising entries that I'd of never have thought of, but couldn't agree more. Glad to see some of my favs in there, and Tyler Durden is a worthy winner. But shouldnt that include 'The narrator' Edward Norton? Seeing as well..their kinda the **** ******? (spoiler free version)

So Tyler Durden is the greatest ever? Rubbish. He's not even that memorable, while Fight Club is arguably Fincher's third best film behind Se7en and Zodiac. Indiana Jones ahead of Bond? Please, the Indy quadrilogy isn't even that good, one good film followed by a crap one then a good film then-aghast-a disaster! Jigsaw ahead of Batman and Bourne? Is this a sole teen vote streaming in? The Star Wars generation voting in their droves along with the Empire brigade of plugging ostensible masterpieces, when in fact they aren't. Farcical

4 out of 5 of my votes made it in to the top 100.

Still can't help but be gutted that J.K. Simmon's J. Jonah Jamison didn't make the cut though!

Really good list, nicely surprised by number 1 as I thought it would be Han Solo (as usual). The only one I disagree with out of the whole top 100 is Ferris Bueller. He's such a dick.

Where is Christopher Reeve's Superman?
Where is Connor Mccleod? (I have no idea how to spell it)
Where is Batman?
Where is Alec Guinness as Obi Wan?
Where is El Mariachi? (I'm Mexican so we have to cheer for someone)
Glad to see Ash there though and I don't agree with Tyler Durden for #1
Great list anyway, I think it is just too short, it should have been 500 characters not just 100.

How could I forget Mad Max?
And Biff?
And what was Brad Pitt's character's name in Twelve Monkeys? I think that is a more memorable performance than Tyler Durden, and F@#%$#! JIGSAW.

Entertaining read and whiled away an hour or so at work.

My top 5 off the top of my head :
Han Solo - Harrison Ford - Original Star Wars Trilogy
Shelock Holmes/Reginald Kinkaid - Michael Caine - Without A Clue
John McClane - Bruce Willis - Die Hard
Hudson - Bill Paxton - Aliens
Indiana Jones - Harrison Ford - Raiders Of The Lost Ark

Although I reckon that list might change given a bit more thought.
