Oh I know - and I'm not bothered. Happy to see Ripley so high, not  just a great female heroine - one of the best realised sci-fi chracters. Her performance in Alien 3 should her earned her an Oscar nod.

A good Top 10, not sure about The Joker at No.3 though (wouldn't have made the Top 30 if Heath Ledger hadn't snuffed it)
Only having Quint at No.50 is a disgrace, and Donnie effing Darko at No.38 makes me want to vomit, especially as it's higher than Blade or Mary Poppins.
Anyway, mustn't grumble.
Is there a link to the full list Helen?

I'm not going to comment cos 3 out of my 5 showed up...my only complaint is that I wish the list was bigger...200 would have been a nice number i think...

Comments like these are as valid as anyone elses.  But to stem the inevitable tide of safely dispensed bile it has to be a situation of "money where your mouth is" time.  If people won't take specific issue and will instead generalise I'd like them to print their own top 5* for approval or ridicule as they might find it.

For me the list was awful in places and awfully good in others.  Take the good with the bad and all that.

*(Oh and my top 5 are in the sister thread of this one)

How does Rocky Balboa get on the list and not Popeye Doyle. This is ridiculous.

Where is Jake La Motta? Where is Colonel Kurtz? Where is Rick Deckard? Where is Oskar Schindler? Where is Jake Gittes?

In some respects it is an admirable list but in others it is quite frankly appalling

Surely if it's greatest 'character' it has to be the character in all it forms. So you, can't just pick Sean Connery's James Bond from Goldfinder, it has to be all James Bonds, all Hannibal Lecters, The Terminator from Terminator 1,2, and 3.

Also no Trent from Swingers - come on people, that's not very money is it!

As everyone complains, people need to stop blaming empire and look at themselves. Sure, the list is shit, but the only one to blame is you.

I am just curious to know who the voters are in these lists and the sort of films they see, as there are only 11 female characters in it. Seriously, come on now.

Not bad, all though there does seem to be a bias towards new films.
But I suppose its a reader's poll and newer films are bound to stick in the head.
Can't believe Norma Desmond didn't make it though!!!

Tyler Durden should not have been #1. Complete BS. He is a great character but I dont think I'm the only one that thinks he should not have been at the top of this list. I think Either The Dude, The Joker, Darth Vader, or Vito Corleone should've been before Tyler. Oh well, at least the greatest screen version of The Joker is in the top 5.

Ellen Ripley is ranked a more iconic character than Michael AND Vito Corleone?  Tommy Devito is ONE RANKING higher than Ace Ventura?  This is a joke.  I'm surprised Spongebob didn't make the cut.

Ask 100 people off the street who Tyler Durden is.  Maybe 10 will mention Fight Club.  Ask the same 100 who Don Corleone is and ALL of the will say "The Godfather"

...and by most of the Top 10. To me, the best characters don't have to be the central characters. My top 5

Jack Sparrow from Pirates
Dignan from Bottle Rocket
Lester Bangs from Almost Famous
Wall-e from Wall-e
Danny from hot Fuzz
