do the Oscars ever matter? everyone likes what they like, i mean, why else would be there a fucking 4th Furious film coming out?!

we all know that The Mist or Dark Knight are two of the best films in possibly a decade, but they won't win shit because apparently to win an oscar the male lead has to cry or be gay in it.

i mean, why else would Cobra get looked over? FUCK YOU AMERICA!

This is ridiculous. The Academy needs to get their game in order sharpish or they're going to find themselves completely out of touch, if they're not there already. The Dark Knight's score was the musical highlight of the year for me (it sounded great in IMAX) and the only good thing about this snub is that it hopefully clears the way for Thomas Newman to finally win an Oscar for his charming score for WALL-E.

Who cares? The Oscars, like all awards ceremonies, are pointless. A film you love isnít any better because it wins an award or any worse if it doesnít.But to be honest I canít actually remember any of the cues from The Dark Knight, the score passed me by, seemed purely functional.

This is true. Doesn't stop the Oscars being fun though, and it being nice when something you like gets recognised.

Also, The Dark Knight score wasn't very good, I was sat in my chair hoping the Danny Elfman score would kick in, because his score frankly pisses all over the Dark Knight one.

It's a stupid ruling - The Dark Knight's is the best score this year from what I've heard. I can't think of any off the top of my head that could challenge it; 2007 had a greater wealth of scores than this year.

Well Wall-E's was better. John Williams is a shoe-in for a nom for Indy. And we haven't heard John Ottamans Valkyrie's score, Danny Elfman's score for Milk, or Howard Shore's for Doubt. So its still early days.

Why?

Yes he's Johnny Williams but I don't think they nominate him for every score he throws out.

Do they not? 45 Noms sort of speaks for itself.

whatever justice that the Oscars once had is nearly gone. Why is it that the best soundtrack that raises the hairs on the back of your head can't be nominated? Hopefully the Baftas will have more sense.

Well they were disqualified for the same reason with Batman Begins so they knew what was coming. Still, fair play to them for not selling out their colleagues in favor of pursuing the golden gong. Bravo!

never mind fanboys, at least The Dark Knight might pick up a 'sexiest Codpiece' award at the MTV movie awards.

That'll more than make up for the lack of Oscars.

Give them some fake score sheets, they won't know.
Heath is guaranteed the supporting actor Oscar.

I think the score for TDK would have taken the oscar anyway. It is an amazing piece of mad beauty. But I think it'll get a nomie in most cat's at the oscars anyway. the Two I'm gagging for it to get - Best Director - Yes. Best Film - Yes - oh! and yeah that other one a few pep's have mentioned - Supporting Actor - Hell Yes! Bring on the list

Good! because the music was shit! I'm a fan of Howard so I bought the soundtrack but all it is, is 80 minutes of the same droning beat and whenever Howard tries to break through with a bit of thematic material, Zimmer once again craps all over it! This score is lazy and boring!

the score for TDK is simply a re-hash of Batman Begins and neither were worthy of an Oscar nomination.

Indy 4's score wasn't even any good.

Beside the main theme, the only thing I remember is Elvis' Hound Dog (which was brilliant).

I have not watch the Oscars for years. I have always had a feeling that it was all fixed anyway. As for disqualifying the score of The Dark Knight, how petty! The score complimented the film perfectly. And what does it matter who wrote which piece of music? Anyway as long as Heath Ledger wins best actor in a supporting role I'll be happy. If not then I'll know I'm right about the Oscars being rigged.

Last year Jonny Greenwood got disqualified, now this. These two are probably the most atmospheric scores of the decade. Also Nick Cave got snubbed even though Jesse James -score was last years best. The academy can be a bunch of tools sometimes.

Agreed, on all points, how any of those scores were disqualified is beyond me. Poor show Academy, very poor show.

While its undeniably a shame to see people get screwed over on a technicality, am I the only person who thought The Dark Knight score was fairly mediocre anyway? There were one or two nice themes, mostly the Newton Howard-ish elements of the score - I'm thinking primarily of the Harvey Dent theme, here - but by and large I found it monotonous, unsubtle and utterly interchangeable with the dozens of formula scores churned out by Zimmer and his farm of Remote Control Productions soundalikes over the last few years, and I would have been bemuseed if it had got a nomination anyway. My suspicion has long been that the reason that this score got such a warm reception was because it had the good fortune of accompanying a cracking film; on its own merits, I really don't think it was up to much.

Oh, and that Zimmer/Going For Gold thing is possibly the best bit of trivia I've learned in years, and I thank you all for it! I can't remember my mind being this blown since I found out that the guy who voiced Shredder in Turtles was the same guy who played Uncle Phil on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air...

That is AWESOME. You've made my day

I dont care how controversial this is. Am I the only person in the world who thinks The Dark Knight was totally over rated? Has the death of one of our most promising young actors caused the world to over sentimentalise this movie? I think it has. Mediocre score + over complicated and inconsequential plot + one great performance (Ledger) does not equal the masterpiece everyone seems to think it is. Begins was a better film, by far. Ok

No.
