I know im in the minority here but im hoping that this delay will be long enough to convince Craig to walk and for the series to be rebooted again. This time to be more like the classic traditional take on the character(smooth, suave, debonair womaniser) rather than the thugish portrayal weve had to endure over the last two movies.

Wow didn't see that coming Silas

I think Hood's right that this delay could well end Craig's tenure as Bond though if it drags out too long due to possible age concerns. I have to admit that I felt Brosnan went one Bond too many despite being in great shape for his age his was definitely showing it in Die Another Day....still at least he didn't go as far as Moore.

Also depending on who takes the rights Craig's contract for two more films may be cancelled or whatever if the new studio home want to go in a different direction and thereby require a different leading man. If that happens don't start celebrating Silas because we all know there's a chance that some moron exec will think a teen Bond in Spy School is a good idea for a series reboot....then you'll end up with Freddie Highmore as Tom Rothman's James Bond.

On the other hand I'd expect the powers that be will want to get this resolved asap because Bond and The Hobbit are two enourmous cash cows at stake - studios just won't want to hang on too long because they're losing money by not making the films. Either MGM will just buckle and accept whatever's offered or the bidding studios will crack and up their offers to what MGM are asking.

But isn't it fair to say that the Bond franchise and The Hobbit are the only things that make MGM attractive to potential buyers?
They know they have 2 franchises that will make around $500m guaranteed with each release, it puts them in a position where they can call the shots to a certain degree. But if they were to sell the licences to those franchises they would arguably be even worse off, cash in the bank but starting from scratch. I really don't want a reboot, recast if you must but just keep the stories flowing.

Yes but aren't MGm doomed anyway? Considering the debt size they don't seem to have any choice other than to sell their big licenses.

Besides, every time you change the Bond actor the series is essentially rebooted as the new guy is appropriate to the current direction of the series and often that coincides with changing film trends. Every time the series gains a new lead his adventures are essentially standalone to the previous leads' outings.

This is the worst thing about the recession.  I don't care about budget cuts, or huge unemployment, or anything like that, I just want to see the Daniel Craig Bond films continue.  Quantum of Solace must be one of the most misunderstood films in the world.  I think people would appreciate it more if they were to see how it advanced the story in Casino Royale, and how it links that film with a mega third film, a fourth, and maybe a climatic fifth.

After watching Inception I thought Tom Hardy would be a great Bond. My personal choice though would be Henry Cavill. I think he's a bit young at the moment but should be the right age whenever they finally get around to making Bond 23.

Here's some more news. Looks like Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes for that matter will stay. Good, I don't see Daniel Craig leaving the project.

This is hopefully good news. A late 2011 release is higly unlikely though even if it does go through in the next week. Bond 23 and The Hobbit are two of the films I'm most looking forward to so I'm hoping this turns out to be true.

Yeah the last thing the series needs is another lengthy sabbatical. I hope Craig and the gang let their hair down a wee bit next time out though.

Another report that they could be back on track soon

Mendes had been in the running to direct The Hunger Games for Lionsgate, but "bowed out of contention last Friday, and I'm told it was because the MGM picture is clearing up and it looks like production on 007 could begin by late summer or early fall, 2011 with Mendes at the helm and Daniel Craig back in the Aston Martin."

Fab news for DC to stay on

Also, if in a few years to come if Christopher Nolan isn't approached to make a Bond film, then I am a monkey's uncle.

With the legal issues surrounding the Hobbit finally sorted out, surely it won't be long before we hear an announcement about Bond 23?

I haven't cared for Bond since Daniel Craig portrayed him. Mark Strong would be a way cooler choice.

I got a launch magazine in the post called Gazzetta claiming to be a new man's mag, so far so boring, but they had a 2 page feature on whether Craig was returning to the role or not, they seem to think the critical mauling that Quantum of Solace received has put him off. I wouldn't blame him for that mess but there really is a need for Bond to go back to basics and have a little tongue in cheek fun, there were elements of that in Casino Royale, but with Solace they went in completely the wrong direction and made a humourless film with an unlikeable lead character.

On the whole it didn’t get anything like a mauling:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/quantum_of_solace/

Slightly disappointing, given the glowing reception for Casino Royal, but generally speaking it was pretty well received by a fair few critics. Doubt the critical reception will have any sway on his decision to return though. If anything, I imagine he would like to come back in order to deliver another quality film. If it eventually ends up sandwiched between two fantastic Bond films QoS may come off a little better, within the context of a trilogy… maybe.

Disappointed that they are getting back on track soon. Was hoping that the delay would drag on long enough for Craig to quit or get booted from the role. His Bond is just SO unlikeable.

QOS being a mess is a purely subjective opinion, not a fact. My PSO on QOS is that was totally appropriate for Bond to be basically a broken man for almost the whole film, given it picked up about an hour or so after Royale ended, having portrayed Bond as someone who nearly managed to regain his soul after meeting Vespa then had it stolen away from him forever.

QOS is the fallout from that, and going after Quantum, in a more 'tradiitonal' bond manner was always the next logical step. The Bond charm is A MASK covering his emptiness, always was. The mask can go on next time, but the groundwork of CRand QOS have showed every potential aspect of Bond, from charming to destroyed, that can now be used, as appropriate, whenever require.

I had always assumed that to be the plan with the first two films, and fully expected that peole would go ballistic about QOS when I saw it. But as character development, QOS works totally, it has ALL the elements required of a Bond film, and what's more, allows MGM the option of having jokey bond as much as possible, but with the viewer knowing just how dangerous he will be to anybody he needs to get past. The Older Bonds could only hint at what Craig has been allowed to portray in QOS (and to a degree, in CR with the 'kill everybody I see' Bond already in full flow when he hits venice, so if you watch CR at the very least from this point prior to QOS, it is very plan there ISN'T the jarring contrast between the two films so many seem to suggest).

I assumed having made, broken, then reassembled Bond as best he's ever going to be after almost entirely losing his soul, a third Craig film would more completely fit the mould of what was expected of a bond film except for when the danger comes, it would feel like danger, not pantomime).

He should return. If only to give Darth Silas a hernia
