O, woe is me. Well not really. What do you reckon I should do: Sleeping Beauty Blu-Ray or Sleeping Beauty standard with lovely packaging? Really cannot wait to see this film again.

Bought Sleeping Beauty Platinum edition on standard DVD. Fantastic film. BUT, while the film is supposed to be in 2.55: 1 aspect ratio, I seem to have something that looks more like 1.85:1. The picture looks like it has been stretched upwards and the characters are quite thin looking.

The difference is really noticeable when you see clips of the film in the special features in Disk 2 which DO appear to be in the correct ratio (much thicker black bars top and bottom and picture not stretched)

As far as I know there's nothing wrong with my DVD player which plays all other DVD's correctly. Any one else experienced this? I love the film itself but am I pissed at this or what!

I personally felt the aspect ratio was fantastic! But that may be because the last time I saw it was on a VHS.

Does anyone actually own Fantasia on DVD or VHS?

I have a Region 1 60th Anniversary Edition, and the picture quality is absolutely horrifying. Does anyone have any idea if this is the best edition of the film that has been released thus far, or there was another limited out-of-the-Disney-Vault release in some other country with better quality picture?

I have all the Disney releases on DVD and I can't recall Fantasia's P/Q as "absolutely horrifying". It's been a long time since I watched it though, so I made a quick online search for reviews of the DVD version that I own (R2) and they seem to agree on that the quality is just fine. Not superb, but fine.
However, Disney is surely going to re-release all of their classics anyway, so I'm sure you with a little bit of patience will be able to get a much better version of it in the (hopefully) not too distant future - whether it will be on Blu-ray or standard DVD.

I had watched snippets of the Sleeping Beauty Platinum Edition dvd and was amazed at the perfect picture quality. This served to get me into a Disney mood and i popped Fantasia into the dvd player, only to be appalled at what i saw. Very grainy, some parts are pixellated, and at one point in the Toccata and Fugue segment i could actually see the edge of the frame, not to mention the rounded corners of the frame. It's not unwatchable, but it pales in comparison to the my image of the Platinum Edition.

If that's the case then that is FUCKING AWESOME!

I won't get my hopes up, and anyway, a Platinum Edition of Fantasia is FUCKING AWESOME in its own right.

Does anyone have a significant number of the Platinum Editions that they're able to observe the progression of the picture quality from oldest to newest? I'd love to hear that the picture quality is continuously getting better, because (judging from Sleeping Beauty) Fantasia looks like it'll be sublimely beautiful in its Platinum Edition Blu-Ray release.

Anyone?

Third post in a row, but I can't contain myself.

I don't know why I never looked this up before, but here it is anyway:

http://www.ultimatedisney.com/platinumedition-rollout-pressrelease-20091011.html

If you can't be bothered reading it, it states that not only will Fantasia be receiving a Platinum Edition release in March 2010, but so will Fantasia/2000.

YESSSS!!!!!!

Watched Sleeping Beauty on Blu-Ray tonight. Absolutely astonishing. Crystal clear picture. The detail on some of the scenery is just unbelievable.

Looking forward to Pinocchio now!

I don't understand this Disney Vault business? Why not just keep the films released all the time? I just saw Sleeping Beauty in BluRay and I'm amazed by how good the picture quality is. It makes it look like the film could be been released yesterday! Any idea if these Bluray Beauty and the Beast ect will contain any new extra features? The DVD seemed to very a pretty solid making of already.

RE my complaint about the Sleeping Beauty Standard DVD aspect ratio earlier in this thread.

Disney customer services got back to me in early December. Turns out there IS a fault with a whole load of the DVD's (whew, not just my imagination). There is a flag missing which means the picture is non-anamorphic.

They are pressing a whole load of fixed replacement discs. I'm waiting for mine at the moment, should be in my hands sometime before the end of January.

Easy enough to tell if you've got a dodgy copy. If the actual film has thinner black bars then the clips of the film on the special features disc and the characters seem strangely thin and tall; time to call the customer services number on the back of the DVD case.

In reply to "The Mighty":

I believe Disney would do this to increase sales. The DVD's are manufactured for about a year before they are cancelled and put in the vault. During the period between its first release and second release, those who missed it will be very, very eager to get again. Therefore, they get the burst of sales upon second release. It cant exactly be said to "work" until October 2009, by then Snow White will be re-released and we can confirm, or not wether its worked.

I desperately want Beauty and the Beast on DVD, watching all the films on YouTube just doesn't do the beauty of the films justice.

Today I saw in Sainsbury's the Sleeping Beauty Deluxe Edition for 7. That's ridiculous if that's right. I'm annoyed I paid 17 now.

With Mary Poppins and Oliver and Companys release last Monday, and Pinnochio tomorrow, I felt it was time to bump this thread.

The Mary Poppins one seems to be kinda the same as the 40th anniversary that was released 5 years back now (a great release). Pinoccio though I want to try and get, I've still got to try and get the Sleeping Beauty release before it disappears.

I got both Pinocchio (great film on a terrific DVD) and Oliver and Company (great film, ok DVD) recently, both superb.... was gonna get Mary Poppins but was too expensive (so was the whole of HMV's Disney range, around 22 each, complete rip off... I'm going to have to search deep next time I wanna buy a Disney DVD)....

On the Pinocchio DVD, it has adverts for both Snow White and Black Cauldron.... I think Snow White will be out late October (like Sleeping Beauty)... but does anyone know when Black Cauldron is out? I've never seen it and I'm very intrigued to get it when it's out...

Both the UK and US have this aswell.
Also about the Black Cauldron, according to UltimateDisney, it will be out by the end of the year.

Anyone have any opinions on the new Disney Family Classics cover art?

Just won the sleeping beauty deluxe package with the book on ebay for 15 (which I thought was a decent deal). I really do hope that it's not got a problem with the picture though like the one stated above as that would be a right pain, though I guess I could pick up a copy of the normal one from HMV and swap it then take the other one back... hmmmm... Either way I am excited! I had a brief look through the book in the shop and it looked a lot better than the 101 dalmations one (which was mainly artwork... nice but not too imformative) This one seemed to have more on how the film was made which is why I opted for it this time.

Quick question (whilst we are on the subject of disney) Disney sequels... usually a bit dodgy with some exceptions (I quite like the Aladdin sequels) But what about the little mermaid sequels. Basically I am wondering whether it is worth picking up the trilogy boxset or just the first film for 10 less... Anyone seen them? I hear the second is dodgy but the third one alright, would that be fair?

I am trying to catch up a little with some of these releases, some it is too late though (like the Lion King trilogy boxset going for upwards of 60 online)
