I liked it but it did'nt feel like a bond film at all and it does seem that the bond films have been overtaken by and are trying to copy the far superior Bourne films. As an action film it's pretty relentless and really exciting in places but once your thru that it's a pretty standard thriller.

Hopefully the next bond film will be more BOND and less BOURNE.

I've now come to realise I tend to disagree with the majority of Kim Newmans reviews. This film was a real let-down, after the excellent Casino Royale. Terribly edited/directed, poor charactarisation, very difficult to follow. Should've been fantastic, instead it was a complete let-down. Give the next one to a director with some action pedigree please.

I thought this was a good film, but a bit hard to follow. I would say that casino royal was better, but stilla good film.

What A Let Down!!! Although Craig Is Undeniably The Best Bond, And The Film Is Nice And Short, There Is No Fully Understandable Plot Line In This Movie. With Letdown Performances From Mathieu Almeric And Gemma Arterton, This Is Just People Banging Each Others Heads Against Walls And Is In No Way As Great And Thrilling And Painful As Casino Royale Was. Lets Hope That Mark Forster Isn't Working On The Next Bond.......

For those who persist in not noticing the humour in QOS, remember this?

Austin Powers: OWWW!! That hurt! Who throws a shoe? You fight like a girl.

In QOS Bond, during a fight scene, actually throws a shoe!

Also, for almost ten years I have, without previously noticing, had a token meter for my gas that operates the Quantum system.

Quantum isa REAL utilities provider related company and in provoking the reolution in the South America, what does the fictional Quantum want? To be the utilities provider!

They really are everywhere, and almost unnoticed

I am a 'huge' Bond fan but I think the series has lost it's way, this doesn't know what it wants to be. Trying too hard to be a Bourne film and not a Bond film. If I wanted Bourne then that is what I'll watch as they are far superior to this nonsense!!! Who cares if the villain wants the water supply of Bolivia!!! How about some proper Blofeld type meglomania in the next one and a bit more like You Only Live Twice/Dr No/Spy Who Loved Me than the Bond Ultimatum!!! A quit with the CGI!!! Bond films pride themselves on real stunts yet in this film there are 2 scenes that are visibly digital effects based (the fight on the scaffold and the falling out of the plane scene) so Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson listen up!!! I don't like Daniel Craig but you can still make a good 'Bond' film with him in it!!! Oh and the song was crap and don't mess with the titles!!!

My review was based on my first watch in the cinema where I had a faulty air con blowing cold air at me so may have been responsible for my lack of enjoyment. Bought the DVD the other day and have watched it twice I enjoyed it so much!! I like the end where Judi Dench says "I need you back Bond" and he says "I never left!" Still think the taking Bolivias water thing is a bit poo as well as the CGI elements but I think this is a great little Bond film that will move on to bigger and better things!!!

I think it takes time to see why this is more like the last 50 pages of Casino Royale, if Casino Royale were a 400 page book.

I thought this was a good attempt to do a bourn-y genre,but not good enough,mark forster was completely copying paul greengrass' style,it wasn't original,but nonetheless it was a fun action flick but i don't think marc forster should be allowed to do the next one,but one of these guys should

Why Quantum of Solace is such an enjoyable experience is because it doesn't try to be better than its predecessor, or copy it in any way. Marc Forster creates his own style and lets the story and characters unfold without meddling too much; exactly what John Boorman should have done with Exorcist II: The Heretic. Watch the opening car chase and Siena rooftop sequence for prime examples.
Daniel Craig is once again the driving force of this action-filled film (more on that later), making the world-famous character his own effortlessly and extremely confidently. He is a joy to watch, as much as or even more than in the superb Casino Royale.
Purvis and Wade, being the reliable writers that they are, realise this time round that Bond is now firmly re-established as a deep and complex character and focus more on the action, while never loosing sight of their protagonist.
Very, very brilliant stuff indeed.

This certainly isn't one of the Bond classics, but I don't think it should even be classed as a Bond movie, nor does it want to be. Instead this is more of an action thriller, and a superb one at that, if focusing a little too much on the action. But this is still top-notch entertainment.

To start with, for a bond film that has filmed in more countries than any other, there doesn't seem to be much difference in the colour scheme. It's a very biege and bleached looking film. Although a very stylish opera sequence gives us much to admire though wouldn't look out of place in a bond film looks out of place in this film and sadly feels quite tacked on.
One thing that bond films and always tended to be is fun. Here, this one, not so much. Implied rape, kill now never ask questions later and a plot that dosent really get much a chance to unfold. Something about water being cut off, it's not really important. An insignificant Bourne clone that has lost it's identity. If the next Bond is like this, surely it's going to start dropping off like I was.
Daniel Craig still does a good job as a more Fleming-esque Bond but theres nothing here he can use to further his interpretation and carries a wafer thin plot well on his braod shoulders, given what he has. The rest of the films key players is a very mixed bag of miscasting. Judi Dench's tired one trick pony M which should had been revoked with Pierce Brosnan gurns a bit more, Gemma Arterton is well above the role of Fields, Amalric gives off a more 'eh? is that the baddie?' performance as the head erm, baddie and Kurylenko needs to speak up I cant hear her characters typical unimaginative back story due to her over brooding and mumbling performance. Theres still no gun barrel opening again neither. If this is bond begins then It's still stuck at the starting line.

They set it up to be the new Spectre which is why I'm mystified that they're dropping Quantum for Skyfall. Unless they're just planning to 'do a Goldfinger'.

A lot of people have said that Dominic Green was a weak villain, but what many don't get is he was supposed to be weak. Not even LeChiffre was physically intimidating, he managed to tie Bond down to a chair because Bond had just emerged from a damn car crash! Greene had major power and influence and that's where his threat came from. I thought he was wonderfully played by Mathieu Amalric as a very smarmy and cocky figure. The oil scene was quite clever and I like Marc Forster's perceptive vision in going for water rather than oil, that was a nice touch. I think it was a shame that Felix Leiter wasn't used more in the film and I'd love to see Jeffrey Wright return as Leiter. Unfortunately, I don't think he will return for Skyfall, but there's hope for other sequels. The car chase was superb despite people saying it was 'car crash' editing, I thought it was nothing of the sort. Should be as frenetic as it was. The standout scene has to be the Tosca opera scene, pure Bond and you could almost imagine stepping back into the 1960's. There was something surreal and grandoise about it. I quite liked how Bond managed to spoil their little secret confab.

Dominic Green was shit because he didn't do anything. Bond and Le Chiffre got plenty of screen time together which made for some excellent dialogue and tension.

Greene was more about playing mind games with Bond, covering Fields in oil, the "looks like you lost another one" line and how he handled Camille at the beginning. Granted, Greene didn't strap Bond to a chair and tickle his nether region, but he did help orchestrate the death of Mathis and generally proved to be quite a pain for Bond. Perfectly summed up by how Bond gave him motor oil before stranding him in the desert.

At the end of it, Green just like LeChiffre was a disposable pawn. A different kind of one with greater connections and power but ultimately he was expendable.

I'm psyched about Quantum, I think organisations are the ideal villain.

Quantum suffered in the villain department. Almaric, though a great actor, had to embody too much, he had to embody the entire films villainy. Those types of villains are really hard to do these days in a convincing way. Think for a moment about the real world. Who are actual existing villains? It's always an corporation. a government, or a cult or a group of religious extremists.

I think the writers got it right with Quantum. It tapped into a collective distrust many people have with organisations these days. It was a difficult thing for Almaric to pull off in the climax. Which I think is why the fiery climax was so emotionally flat. Defeating Almaric was meaningless, as he was just pawn, and hardly a physically threatening one.

The greatest scene was the scene in the opera where Bond springs Quantum. It's visually stunning, suspenseful and complex.

Interesting that so many think Green wasn't a good enough villain. Though it pretty realistic that he was oily (totally fits the use of oil in the film) and his position of power made him what he was, not his physicality.

Plus, the film was still about bond becoming bond. To use a computer game analogy, the first boss you fight is never the baddest boss you fight. And with the character building stuff for Bond sorted, the balance between iconic bond and iconic baddie is totally set up.

CR, Le Chiffre looks like the baddie, but he's terrified of those above him because he's a dead man if he fucks up. QOS, Green is echelon's above Le Chiffre, he's not just a money broker, he's influencing regime change and though a pussy, his power scares people more physically imposing than him. Except in a mano a mano, when he is shite. He ends up dead, and it isn't clear who killed him, with him being found dead, with two bullets in him. Quantum paying him back, just like Le Chiffre?

There are people above him. Mr White is clearly even more of a 'somebody' that either of these first two, but whatever the extent to which Quantum does or does not feature in the next one, each time, for as long as a run of Bond films under one actor can sustain it, it's likely Bond wi;; meet a badder. bigger boss each time.

And as for the quantum wont feature next time info, well, Green blabbed all he had to Bond. So it could still be quantum next time, having had to react to the British secret service knowing more about them, but maybe the arrogance shown in having a name for the baddie club will have been shied away from? If they had people everywhere, they wouldn't have all been rooted out, and presumably the biggest of all bads (which wont be white, there'll be someone who doesn't deal with things publicly in any way I would have thought) would direct the others to fall back, perhaps to positions of operation pre arranged in the eventuality of the name Quantum becoming common currency, assuming it wasnt a 'skin' for bigger things in the first place...

Brutal and breathless, Quantum Of Solace delivers tender emotions along with frenetic action. Not as good as franchise reboot Casino Royale, but still an impressive entry to the Bond canon.
