For one of my English courses at Uni Ive been given the assignment of reviewing a novel first published in 2008. The problem is I have no idea what has come out this year. Does anybody have any suggestions of novels that have come out this year that they would recommend I read?

You could try the Booker longlist - most of these were 2008. Pratchett, Brookyre had news one out this year. Does it need to be a particular type?

Maybe list your favourite novelists and then check their bibliographies?

Being an English student, I haven't read much written after the 19th century. Looking at the Man Booker shortlist and longlist, A Fraction of the Whole and A Case of Exploding Mangoes look interesting. Does anybody else have any recommendations?

I enjoyed Neil Gaiman's latest.

does it have to be a novel? cos Robert Bolano's Last Evenings On Earth came out early this year which i'm currently reading and it's excellent (short stories BTW)

The Pirate Code by Helen Hollick was a really enjoyable read.  Starfishing by Nicola Monaghan was too.    Problem is I tend not to buy many books from bookstores or online these days.  Usually I get them from the author and either proof or first editions so I'm really not sure of what else has come out this year.  Sorry that I can't really be of more help.
