Something tells me I should play the first one.

It's a niggling feeling, that I can't quite put my finger on.

There are times in Deadspace where it is as terrifying as Doom was back in the day.

Huh?! When has DOOM ever been scarey? It's always been about non-stop strafing and blasting!

Except 3, but let's not talk about that.

I used to play DOOM II in the dark on my PS through surround sound speakers, your not telling me when you heard doors opening in a dark room and those invisible pigs coming after you wasn't scary!?! Also the soundracks (which I still have) are fantastic, some of the best, most atmospheric game music you'll ever hear.

Oh yes. Didn't some of the soundtrack feature babies crying? That always used to freak me out....

Yep, the Mount Erebus level had that one, and I agree its incredibly chilling. Still listen to pieces from those soundtracks yet when in the mood, great stuff.

You're talking about the console ports which had both level redesigns and music changes - the original Doom and Doom II on PC (the direct port versions on XBLA too) have more musical / rock midi style soundtracks. I actually really like both, playing the N64 version when I was younger was pretty creepy.

Yeah I first played Doom on the Playstation before I got my original PC in '99, though I bought Doom on there too and recognised the differences straight away, I couldn't get into the music as much as it didn't sit right with me after hearing the PSX versions despite being the original versions!

It was on sale (75% off) on Steam yesterday, 1 and 2.

I gave it a miss but regret it...if it's still on when I get home I'm buying them both.

If I didn't already have these on the Xbox, I'd be tempted by that price. Anyway, I think the offer is on until tomorrow so you should be fine.

Signed up to get early access to the Dead Space 3 demo, on January 15th, a week before it officially comes out on the Marketplace.

It's a 360 only thing though.

Cheapest pre-order I can find

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/dead-space-3-pre-order-smg-xbox-360-ps3-34-15-zavvi-1436742

How are Zavvi at getting stuff out? I may stick with Shopto for the few extra quid if it means getting it quicker.

Zavvi are fine at getting stuff out. No better or worse than Play/Amazon etc although they are nowhere near as rapid as ShopTo

Shat myself at least 6 times, once at a stick poking out of the ground and forgot to breath a couple of times. Short easy demo that I'll need to co-op soon.

Very Dead Spacey

I don't think people slagged the game for being too easy, just too action-orientated and not-scary enough.

If you're referring to DS2 when compared to the first then you've hit the nail in the head DC

I rolled my eyes as soon as I saw you two had replied. Not scary enough? All the times I suggested playing on the hard to the core mode which makes it 10 times scarier than the first did you try that? No, just come on here moan and moan and dont even try it in case your complaints become void. Cant have that can we? But you still wont and you'll still ne adamant that your right. Its how you roll.

Well it looks like the action continues in DS3 so no doubt you'll be on here to complain (will you even play it?!) I'll be loving it and enjoying the co-op too (controversial)

I played through the first game on my first play through on the hardest mode/difficulty available (I don't remember if that them unlocks an even tougher mode) and I also opted to just stick to the original gun as well. This created a real feeling of being trapped in that floating soup can, with very little means of seeing off whatever was lurking and ready to jump out at you. Also because of my weapon choice I was restricted ammo wise as well. This made for a great survival horror atmosphere.

Being the only person on board is what made the game what it was, and it was this aspect of DS2 that I couldn't get past, the existence of other people. I'm not saying in its own right it's not an enjoyable game, but its certainly not what the original game was, which is what I wanted from the game. It's not something I could really see past, if I wanted action I'd have bought a standard TPS/FPS game. It's like the long awaited, but never confirmed Mirror's Edge 2, I'd be incredibly disappointed if they did finally release it and DISE had decided to put the free running on the back seat and instead focus on gun play, it could still be a good game but its not what I and a lot of others would have wanted from a sequel. And by the by I have played (though not finished the second installment of Dead Space)

One thing I can admit to is co-op being a pull factor in DS3 (the only occasion I'd accept you not being the only survivor/human left).

Did you play DS2? (just re-read your post and saw that you have) There were other people involved but you were still pretty much on your own with the necromorphs. Play it, on hard to the core, you will be challenged and you will be scared. There is no argument against that.

The thing with a sequel how would they put Isaac in the same position again? I was concerned before it was released that it would be all action but I chose to give it a chance and was handsomely rewarded for doing so. The atmosphere was slightly different but it still worked. In the end it was just about atmosphere to make it scary it was that AND the fact that there was real fear of walking around every corner knowing that if you died there was a real punishment rather than just simply starting from the last checkpoint. Even the smallest enemy or situation had a real edge to it. Its the only game Ive ever played that I was completely on edge with all the way through. I know I keep banging on about it but it really was that good and when I keep reading that people where either saying it wasn't scary or difficult enough it without playing it on a mode that more than took care of those things I find it bizarre.

The fact that there are other people too made for a real punch the air moment in the game that Ive never felt before. Play it on Hard to the Core, you owe it to yourself and then come back and tell me you didnt find it scary enough. I'll respect your opinion then.
