Transformers at 309 - people should be ashamed, it's awful. But wouldn't these arguments be irrelevant if it was called the 500 most popular films of all time rather than greatest? No, it wouldn't, since the Empire list mixes popular movies with great movies. Citizen Kane and such are certainly terrific movies and are thus included in the list due to their theatrical greatness rather than popularity (no offense to the average movie watcher, but I'd bet that only a minority has actually seen those classics). Other movies such as 300 and transformers which are widely popular, but cannot with the classics are merely listed due to their popularity (and being quite decent for entertainment). So, in my opinion this top500 is stuck in the middle, trying to appeal to cinematic mastery and to win the popularity contest. This approach can only lead to fail! I was very disappointed not to see metropolis and the great dictator on the list. How can you forget a classics like that??? And what about listing superbad and hot fuzz, but not Wall Street? Yeah, Michael Douglas only gave one of the greatest performance of a villain of the '80s and received a oscar and a globe for that! *shaking head in disbelief* I was also surprised by all those comic adaptations (besides the Nolan and Burton Batman movies, they're good). A compromise of a decent movie and which most likely would be supported by the masses would be "slumdog millionaire". Overall, the list is O.K., but some listings are clearly "swing and a miss"! Next time, make a film critics list and a list derived from popularity polls, but don't put them together!
