Recently there have been rumours that Tony Jaa dissappered when filming Ong Bak 2, well now if the information provide is true is somewhat strange.

Source: http://twitchfilm.net/site/

Just because, you know, crying on network TV isn’t a weird enough way to end this particular story the saga of the MIA Tony Jaa got a good bit weirder over the past week before coming to an end.  Finally.  We think.  Here’s the skinny:
After the TV crying episode Jaa was whisked away in a car full of “heavies” that included his lawyer, a situation that prompted his own father to speculate that the martial arts star had been kidnapped.  But no, Jaa turned up shortly thereafter to say there was no kidnapping.  He did, however, have a list of seven demands that Sahamongkol must meet if he was to finish filming Ong Bak 2.  And those are:

1. He wants an extra 55 million baht to finish the last 20 percent of the film. That does not include the cost of the film, actor hire, studio hire, theatre run.
2. Jaa wants the right to choose his own production crew, which would include Ong-Bak 2’s producer and Jaa’s mentor, Panna Rittikrai
3. Jaa’s personal manager would have the right to oversee the accounts for the total production
4. He would have the film finished by November 30
5. He wants details concerning the actor’s fee, and his director’s fee
6. Jaa would like a 50-million-baht share of the profits from distribution and ticket sales. Previously, Jaa and Sahamongkol Film agreed that he would get a 25 percent share of net revenue from those sources
7. An end to the contract that Jaa signed for acting services with Sahamongkol.

Jaa went so far say to say that if these demands were not met he would disappear once again, and this time would never be found.  Sahamongkol’s response?  Well, let’s just say the saga ended with Jaa walking in to a police station saying that he was being followed by a large car full of men dressed in safari suits.  Sahamongkol’s boss Sia Jiang then turned up at the police station for a face to face meeting with Jaa after which Jaa dropped his demands and agreed to finish the film on schedule.

They should work all that drama into the film somehow. Much better than the crappy plot for the first Ong Bak.

It has shades of what happened between Jackie Chan and Lo Wei back in the early 80s, although, that was more to do with creative differences than anything else.

However, it has been said that Tony Jaa is on a slavary contract earning approximately 50,000 baht (about $1,600) a month, which isn't such a huge amount for an international star. Also add to the mix that his lawyer is constantly in his ear it all adds up to a whole heap o' trouble.

I'm certainly not excusing any of the actions taken by Mr Jaa, but he certainly hasn't been alone in this debacle.

I always wondered how he was getting on. Well he needs a better agent! Sounds like Tony Jaa has a point. Though going about it the wrong way. Also some of the op may just be journalist bullshit with everything blown out of proportion.

Surely you must mean POUNDS there, not dollars!

Even so still not a lot for an international film star and, arsehole or not, I can't wait to see Ong Bak 2.

No, I mean dollars. Current exchange rates have it at approx £1450-£1500. I don't know about anyone else here but I wouldn't fancy putting my body through what he does for £800 a month.

Then again, thats only a rumour, a very strong rumour, but a rumour non the less. In a situation like this nobody can be sure of what the facts really are.

Still, the trailer does make it look fantastic, I could have done without all this fiasco.

I just hope he gets to finish the movie soon and release it... Then start on the next film

Bah, that 'plot' merely served to create one of the greatest martial arts films of all time, in my opinion.

I actually think Jaa is the victim in all of this. He was using his own money to try and finish the movie before he did his disappearing act. Facing bankruptcy whilst trying to finish a movie you have to wear several hats for (actor, director, stuntman) must be stressful - and then having your backers trying to bring in a guy you hate to finish the thing without you takes the piss.

Incase it hasn't been posted elsewhere, Ong Bak 2 got some very bad reviews upon release in Thailand in December. Apparently some of the stuff from the trailer doesn't actually take place in the film, but has been saved for Ong Bak 3 instead (which comes out this year I believe). The studio heads will have you believe Jaa is happy again and enjoying being back at work, but the rumours in Thailand seem to suggest he didn't like what they did to his movie upon re-editing it in order to get a third film out (and inserting Dan Chupong's character in an attempt to ensure "the next Tony Jaa" is up and ready for the studio).
My friends in Thailand have all said they came away disappointed because there isn't as much fighting as the trailer suggests and that the way the film has been edited works against it. They all seem to agree that Jaa has improved as an actor though.

Here's the official line coming from the studio themselves:

"'Ong Bak 2' is only the beginning for Tony Jaa, who will soon be back on the set, filming scenes for 'Ong Bak 3'

The new martial arts film "Ong Bak 2 has been in cinemas for just two weeks and already Sahamongkol Films' president Somsak "Sia Jiang" Techaratanaprasert is talking up a storm about the next episode in the franchise.

He's even sunk more than Bt200 million in "Ong Bak 3".

"'Ong Bak 2' is just the prologue," he explains. "The climax of the story comes in 'Ong Bak 3', with lots of excitement in the key action scenes, on which we'll be spending more than Bt100 million."

"Ong Bak 2" has so far earned more than Bt100 million at the box office, not bad for 13 days but still far short of the Bt300 million it cost to make.

The studio and the film's director and star, Phanom "Tony Jaa" Yeerum were able to resolve their conflict over budget overruns but the long delay in shooting led to Somsak deciding to split the film in two parts, with the rest of the story being told in "Ong Bak 3".

"After Jaa returned to work, we had little time to finish the film in time for the December 5 deadline and we couldn't postpone the release," he says.

Restored faith

Filming of "Ong Bak 3" will commence before the end of the year and will only take a short time, as there's plenty footage from "Ong Bak 2" that can be used,

However, there are concerned that the decision to split the film in two parts may negatively affect foreign sales.

"We'll know the response at the Cannes film market in May," he says.

Japanese and North American distributors have already cancelled pre-sale deals for "Ong Bak 2", causing a loss to the company of more than US$5 million (Bt175 million).

Somsak says he has faith in Jaa and believes the superstar is back on track.

"What happened in the past was caused by people around him. We have cleared the air and Jaa is enthusiastic about returning to work," he says.

And Somsak is already thinking about "Ong Bak 4", saying he hopes to persuade Jackie Chan to play a role in the project.

STAMPEDE!

>> The key scene in "Ong Bak 3" will see elephants invading the palace.

>> "Ong Bak 3" will be in cinemas next year."

So Ong-Bak 3 was released, Jaa went mad and became a monk, but apparently he's much better and is reteaming with Ong-Bak director Prachya Pinkaew for Tom Yum Goong 2 which has been filming.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Yum_Goong_2

It also stars Yanin Mitananda who was in the excellent Chocolate.

Also, did anyone else know that Prachya Pinkaew made a film with Djioumen Houston and Kevin Bacon!?!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant_White_(film)

It has now been added to my LoveFilm list.

Ong Bak 2 was a classy action pic spoiled by the ending which nobody advertised - the 3rd installment while having it's moments was clearly a mess in many places, and while I appreciate some of the mystical / self reflection aspects was simply not the follow up anyone was anticipating.

Warrior King 2 though? Yeah sign me up.
