Wanna know what kills more police than bullets and liquor? Boredom. They just can't handle that shit. You keep it boring, String. You keep it dead fucking boring.

RIP.

Sad news, a great character.

Ironic that I was going to hunt out this thread this monring. I've had the boxset for close on 3 years now, and only started watching it - from Season 1 - about 2 months ago. We finished Season 3 last night.
Me and the missus have had conflicting views on this though. Her problem is she can't stand ANY of the characters. The police are all corrupt and nasty, the bad guys are, well, bad guys.
Favourite characters though, considering I have only just finished Season 3 are:- (spoilers for S1-3)

1) Omar. Just so fucking cool, he has the best lines, the best snarls, a bad guy you can root for.
2) Stringer Bell. I guess a bit of bias towards the Brit (not to mention him being Luthor ) but he was plain nasty, ruthless and probably got his commeuppance in the end. I was gutted though when Omar and that silly bow-tied fucker shot him
3) Bubs. Just brilliant. After the Orca I think my must have tv/film prop would be his shopping trolley
4) Bunk. Makes me laugh when he gets pissed and staggers around by the trainline.
5) Carver. Perhaps the only copper with even a smidgeon of morals. His work in Hamsterdam in Series 3 probably just slightly shaded he was dodgy and corrupt in the first 2 series.

Calvin was a good cop. Hamsterdam was never going to work, but his heart and morals were in the right place.

I need to break out the Wire again soon, it's been a few years since I watched it now. Top 5 characters for me (although this changes fairly often):

1. Omar
2. Lester (so fucking cool)
3. Bunk (hilarious)
4. Bubbles
5. McNulty

I don't know if you could call Omar a villain, I look at him more of a Punisher/Robin Hood type character (mind you I haven't seen series 5 yet.).

Also another sad story to see on the link to news of Chew's death there is a "where are they now "gallery link, Felicia Pearson, famously plucked off the streets to play Snoop, was convicted in 2011 of selling heroin. Given a chance and blew it.

Rewatched S2 and 3 over last few weeks, still amazing. I originally had S3 behind S2 but after this (my 2nd time of seeing both) it jumps up the list. Looking forward to hitting S4 and 5 now. Always had S4 down as the best one. As things stand

S4
S3
S2
S1
S5

But the difference in quality from top to bottom really is minimal.

I really need a rewatch. Got a mate who's watching it for the first time and is currently on S3. Very jealous.

Finished watching the 5th series yesterday so had a bit of time to reflect. highlights bunk and mcnulty and the 'fuck' crime scene, the death of stringer bell and his confession to avon. seemed to me stringer wanted to be the business, legit side and play the gangster when it suited, a foot in both camps. thought scott the reporter was one of the most hatefull characters. guss slowly uncovering his fanciful quotes was a brilliant slow burner..
best series for me was the 4th never thought the education system could be so interesting.

I've been watching this over the last few weeks for the first time. Was reluctant as i've tried it before but felt it was too slow for my liking.

However, after some nagging from friends, family and colleagues, I decided to give it another go. Glad I did. It's some of the best tv I have ever seen - Bubs walking through Hamsterdam for the first time - incredible scene.

I've just finished season 4 - having only started it last night - and so far Season 3 is my favourite. A lot of the people I know who have seen it say that 4 is the best, but I felt like the political side of the education sector was kind of shoehorned in towards the end and didn't really go into much depth. A shame really - but it was still excellent.

I finished season 4 today myself. It's my 3rd time through and 4 is still my fave. I love the arcs of all the boys, and we lost Bodie

Gonna catch up with Breaking Bad before doing season 5

I just finished season 5.

Probably the most frustrating central storyline of all the seasons. I hated what McNulty and Lester were doing but it made for excellent viewing.

I need more time to reflect on what I have seen in the last couple of weeks but The Wire is some of the best television I have ever seen.

Started again on sky Atlantic couple of Fridays ago. Immediately hooked again. Can't wait to watch it through.

In the middle of a rewatch, currently coming towards the end of S3. It's my third full rewatch and it's even better than the first two (and I already considered the show the best thing ever committed to screen).

Just got to where Prez has shot the cop. Devastating moment when he tells Daniels 'Say sorry to Lester for me'.
