Also, the very first line from season 2, "Freezing my balls off." I don't know why but I love it and I kind of knew then I was going to love the season, just perfect McNulty. I use the line a lot now too.

Ziggy was indeed an annoying prick, but that's what he was meant to be!

Exactly. Watch anything else James Ransone has been in (Generation Kill being the obvious example) and it becomes immediately obvious that it's very much a character trait of Ziggy to be a prick. The guy is an incredibly versatile actor.

That The Wire doesn't use flashbacks (except for that unfortunate bit in the first episode, which I feel doesn't count) makes the deaths that much more effective.

You know you will never see the character again in any way, shape, or form.

Never.

I'm trying to spread the word on this show. So far I've managed to get two people to check it out.

Two isn't much, but small victories count too.

Motherfucking season link.

Just checked and they are already upto "That's got his own" which is ep12 of season 4.

Season three only finished 2 weeks ago. I think they have two different run's.

I thought The Wire was going to be run on Atlantic?

Damn. This thread has just made me realise that 'The Wire' is now missing from my Sky Planner

Looks like I'll have to find it via other means.

I was watching it at FX speed, it was on once a week on a Wednesday night. Now it's disappeared. I think I watched the first episode of season four, maybe the first two.

Damn....

I think Sky Atlantic are showing the entire series again. Came home last night and my housemate was watching the first ever episode. Felt obliged to sit there and watch it and it made me want to watch the entire thing again. Think I might have to.

Me and the missus finished Season 5 the other week.

I now confidently place The Wire as my second favourite TV show of all time. I know there was a lotta love for Stinger Bell, but for me, the best character in the whole thing was easily Omar. Just sheer class. I seriously could go back tom the start and rewatch it all again. Awesome, awesome, awesome. It has also resulted in me doing Drunk Bunk impressions when drunk myself...."Jimmy mpppff rummmpppfff liissssh" etc etc, Another great, great character.

I am now trying to spread the word amongst friends and family - to little success. Most dont make it past the first episode!

I've got the same problem. It's frustrating.

Fuck 'em, they don't deserve The Wire... I don't really mean that. Everyone deserves The Wire.

Btw, Omar is by far the most popular character on the show, so you're not alone.

Funnily enough with the Grantland link being the most recent Wire related post, wonder what everyone thinks of this http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/whats-alan-watching/posts/interview-david-simon-doesnt-want-to-tell-you-how-to-watch-the-wire

I would caution that it's a long interview.

2 strands that I'd particularly like to focus on. Firstly Simon's sensitivity to how people consume the Wire. As much as I think he's a genius, I don't think he does himself any favours with type of thing. If people choose to discuss who the coolest character is, or the best season, should he really care? I totally agree with his complaint about people missing the point, but as the show gets ever greater exposure as the years go on, is not naive to expect anything else?

Then there's the discussion around the value of weekly blogging and the comparison to analysis of novels. TV is not a novel and it's not going to be judged the same way. I think the legacy of the Wire is that with every year there are more viewers who are willing to watch TV shows in a different way and with more patience. Simon seems to be moaning here, about mindless critics who miss the point - again, who cares?! It seems to me that his type of show and those that follow his lead, now find a greater audience than ever before, so I'm not sure why internet hacks seem to bother him so much.

He just seems bitter about the changing face of media - it's understandable but he's pissing into the wind here. Or am I missing the point????

I get where he's coming from, and the way he sort of backtracked in that "I don't want to offend anyone but I also stand by my opinion and am frankly just a bit of an old curmudgeon really" suggests to me that he was just ranting a little in the original interview. Grantland, which I'm a fan of, is probably guilty of that sort of ranking and competitive voting as that's a very typical thing American sports sites do -- oh look NFL.com's got a page today about the best draft picks at each choice -- I find that sort of thing a little insubstantial at times and I'm not sure if Simon refers to that in his Sepinwall interview, but there's a tendency for lists and things like that to overwhelm more in-depth discussion. I'd argue he's wrong (at least with most shows, with The Wire certainly being one of the exceptions) about reviewing on an episode by episode basis being an inherently bad thing. There are probably a lot of sub-standard bloggers who use that method to bump up post counts, but I'm sure pretty much everyone who watches TV reacts to each episode individually, even if you're watching in bulk, and most shows aren't created with the kind of cohesive overall vision that are the key strength of some of Simon's shows. And I find that I enjoy certain things more by giving them space: a good cliffhanger can sometimes be appreciated more if you have to wait an agonising week for it to be resolved.

My mum when she first started watching it wondered what all the fuss was about too, I remember her asking me on the first series 'do they sit on that chair the whole series!?!' as she didn't quite get the pacing of the show at the time. However once she got into it she loved it and though that was partly down to her fancying Cedric, Omar and Bunk, she was hooked watching every episode as each series progressed.

I've seen it through twice now, and Omar was my favourite character the first time, but I found myself preferring Bubbles on the second as I felt he was the show's humanity and I really felt for him at the end of season 4 particularly.

Ahhhhhh, its been a good year since I watched this all the way through. Still undecided as to whether I prefer this over BSG (currently on a re-run) as 'Greatest Show OF All Time'.

Must definitely give this another watch soon.

Absolutely loved this series. I think the final season was definitely the weakest, mainly because in a show that contained a lot of realism some of the stories felt a little too wacky. Most people bitch about season two but I think it was important in showing how the drugs get to the streets, it would definitely be the second weakest season though.
The best season was probably three.

The show as a whole though, wow. Never seen any film or other tv series with more interesting character development. I never really saw everyone's fascination with Stringer Bell though. I found Marlo to be a much more effective villain because he felt more realistic as a genuine gangster as opposed to Stringer who just felt like a cool movie villain. He had this huge reputation yet was subtly calm and subdued so when he did eventually lose his rag it was terrifying.

My favourite character had to be Jimmy McNulty, the guy is hilarious. Yet again season 5 was a bit silly but I couldn't help loving that scene where Jimmy is banging that broad against the car bonnet. Lester Freemon and Colvin were also fantastic and in terms of character development Prez, Bodie and Carver were top notch. However I despised Cedric Daniels, guy just seemed like a pompous ass throughout.

Finished the series about a year ago and would recommend it to anyone. My brother started watching it but he got bored at season 2 and quit.
Sad I finished after reading through this thread, it brought back a lot of good TV memories but at least I have Game of Thrones to keep me entertained.
