My one major disagreement - how on earth could you leave out Volver?

I know it was very close to making it I am a big fan of that film, hopefully having just started Uni it won't take me too long to complete this thread

I think Volver would probably make mine too. Quite difficult with foreign titles so I still admire the work trying to work out and fit those in. There aren't many in the V list I'm fond of though - Vanishing, I think, is a great choice

Well, it looks nice. That's pretty much Vampyr's only major positive, so it's a good thing it looks really, really good. The camerawork and setting establish a properly gothic mood from the off, and plenty of interesting or arresting images are thrown into the mix, all the more remarkable considering how often cliches of the genre are merrily thrown in. The problem is that everything linking these great visuals is really quite terrible. The plot, for instance, doesn't even attempt to make sense, and suffers from appalling pacing. After an eventful and tense opening 20 minutes, the film decamps, 1931 Dracula style, to a big ol' mansion where we remain for the rest of the film, the tension dissipating almost instantly. For another example of how the pacing's off-kilter, the title character, the vampire the entire film is about, is introduced and killed within the space of about five minutes. There's a whole bunch of people in the aforementioned mansion, none of which have much of a character to speak of, and even our "hero" has no character save what we're bold-facedly told about him in an opening text scroll. His role seems to be an audience-surrogate, an observer character, but there's a difference between observing and doing fuck all to advance what little plot there is. The only character that goes beyond being a guy in the film is the doctor, and even then because he's so obviously evil that every "subtle" hint the film drops is almost painful to observe. His eventual fate is wonderfully nasty though, I enjoyed that. Oh, there's also a love subplot. I didn't notice it until the end, and by then the couple were merrily wandering into a sunny field as the end title came up. This film would work a lot better as a series of photographs.

I think Volver would probably make mine too. Quite difficult with foreign titles so I still admire the work trying to work out and fit those in. There aren't many in the V list I'm fond of though - Vanishing, I think, is a great choice

Yeah still a few I am going to catch up with and then maybe add later such as Violence at High Noon which I think sounds excellent.
