How it works is I'll make a Top Ten list for every letter, including some which just missed out and than will produce a Top 24 based on which films tops each letters list, plus a shoutish review explaining why.  The fun thing is at this stage I'm not even sure of all the films which will be included.  Please add your thoughts and own lists if you see fit.  So thats get started!

Top Ten Films Starting with the letter A
1. The Apartment [Billy Wilder,1960,US,120 Min] 10/10
2. All about Eve (Joseph L Mankiewicz,1950,US,138 Min) 10/10
3. Anatomy of a Murder (Otto Preminger,1959,US,160 Min) 10/10
4. Annie Hall (Woody Allen,1977,US,93 Min) 10/10
5. American Beauty (Sam Mendes,1999,US,122 Min) 10/10
6. Alien (Ridley Scott,1979,US/GB,117 Min) 10/10
7. Amelie (Jean-Pierre Jeunet,2001,Fr/Ger,125 Min) 10/10
8. Assault on Precinct 13 (John Carpenter,1976,US,91 Min) 9/10
9. Amores Perros (Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu,2000,Mex,154 Min) 9/10
10. American Psycho (Mary Harron,2000,US/Can,101 Min) 9/10

Close calls:Airplane! A Ma Soeur, Amsteur, Aguirre Wrath of God, The African Queen and Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

I will edit my list if I see new films which I feel worthing of making the top ten.  More next week.

Nice list.  You're going to struggle for 10 films when you get to Q though.

I've not seen several films on Elephant's list.  My own top 10 would be:
Angels with Dirty Faces
Arsenic and Old Lace
The Andromeda Strain (1971)
Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)
All the President's Men
Apollo 13
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Apocalypse Now
Alien
Armour of God

I'm just on for watching All Quiet on the Western Front now so that might pop in, who knows.

Worst film beginning with A The Avengers

Good idea for a list, though it might lose some muscle because of the lack of actual reviews. Still, you seem to have an extensive film knowledge.

And as for the Apartment I still haven't seen it, otherwise I am certain it would be high up on the list.

Carrie! I like you too! Speaking of Brian De Palma and C, what are your thoughts on Carlito's Way?

I'd put Casino in there too, but this is great list (even if Chinatown is very much overrated).

I guess the thing with Caltios Way is that I've seen it, but a long time ago so would need to see it again, at the moment I don't rate it highly enough to make the list.  And I wasn't a big fan of Casino, one Scorsesea duds for me.

I'm sorry, I just don't like the film very much. Then again, I always like to be proven wrong when it's on the subject of films, but as far as Chinatown goes, I've never understood quite what it is about it. Maybe you can enlighten me?

On the Crash subject I've just started reading the Ballard Novel and have hopes, as the film is surely one of the most perfect ever and you get so much more on repeat watches.

Like the main list.  Les Diaboliques, Dancer in the Dark, Dark Blue, Dark Passage, The Day of the Jackal, A Day at the Races, Dead Calm, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Do the Right Thing, Doctor Zhivago, Double Indemnity, Dr No, Dr Strangelove, Drunken Master, Duck Soup.  Are all worth a look too.

Each to their own.  The moon buggy sequence, Charles Gray as Blofeld, Wint and Kidd, Tiffany Case with a machine gun on the oil rig and I for one would have thrown Jimmy Dean's Willard Whyte straight back to the kidnappers.

Add in the fight in the elevator and they are all reasons why I love Diamonds are forever!

Oh and dont forget bambi and thumper. Though they did suffer from something a lot of female ass-kicking characters used to suffer from in the movies. They could bash heads with the best of them but one well-aimed sludge to their mouth and they go down like a ton of bricks.

I've only just come across this thread.
Some great films listed so far - don't agree with all of your choices, but that's only to be expected and part of the fun of a thread like this.
I was disappointed not to see Amadeus included under the A's.
Looking forward to the rest of your choices.
