That was an illusion though, it didn't actually happen. From the Red Dwarf website- quote:
Q Why "Series X"? A The Back to Earth special is now officially considered, for all intents and purposes, the "ninth series" of Red Dwarf – as such, the series that we're now moving on to should be considered the tenth. Besides, Red Dwarf X just sounds pretty neat, don't you think? and quote:
Q What happened after Series VIII? A The 2009 Easter special Back to Earth was a three-part story written and directed by Doug Naylor and starring starring Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn as their classic characters. It maintained the continuity of the show as seen in Series I to VIII, but as yet we don't know what happened to the characters in the nine-year gap. At some point Kochanski left the crew, and Lister was left aboard an 'old style' Red Dwarf with Kryten, Cat and a hologram version of Rimmer. There's still a lot of history to discover. So we can still find out what happened in that gap during the new series.
