Randy Blythe acquitted. I don't know much about the guy but he seems to have handled the whole thing with considerable dignity:

I'm not really a fan of their music, but watching the crowd when they were playing the main stage at Download was fucking insane! It looked like a 200,000 strong mosh pit... I was too scared to go down and get involved.

Just noticed this thread! Yeah, I love metal, but I've fallen a bit out of touch lately... for me, it was the mid to late 90's when I was really plugged in to what was going on.

Paradise Lost, Fear Factory, Type O Negative, Soulfly, Pantera, Tura Satana, so many others... anyone else love this period?

Another vote for how sad this is. I've been a Maiden fan since I was a kid and they've done so much brilliant stuff over the decades, but the Di'Anno years have got a certain vibe to them that was never re-captured.

Just check my avatar for proof.

That aside, my taste of Metal is not as narrow as Grindcore.

I certainly am. I tend to listen to mostly Industrial Metal, like Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, Hanzel und Gretyl. I also like other musicians that are not in this genre (non-metal), like some David Bowie and Danny Elfman.

I learnt that it's best not to stick to the same genre constantly, as it gets boring after a while.

RIP Jeff Hanneman

A true great in the field of metal, and, while their recent output has been a bit of a let down, the first few Slayer records are classics of the genre.

Unbelievable news. And he was only 49. Complications from a fucking spider-bite? Horrific.

I can't claim to be a huge Slayer fan as they were a bit before my time and for my initial forays into Metal I went the Metallica/Maiden route. But there's no denying their influence and the respect they hold amongst their peers. And didn't Hanneman write most of the tunes?

RIP Mr Hanneman.

I was never a Slayer fan, but you can't deny the band's huge influence in the genre, to which Jeff Hanneman's style and songwriting was a major contributor. I always remember the huge wall of Marshall 4x12 cabs behind him when he played - real Spinal Tap showmanship (even if most of them were fake!). He was undeniably a legend in the field, and 49 is an awfully early age to check out. It also sounds like a potentially horrible demise - liver failure that may have been from complications from necrotising fasciitis possibly contracted through a spider bite - and I hope that his end when it came was as peaceful as possible.

Ah man, that's a shame. Reign In Blood, South Of Heaven and Seasons In The Abyss would easily walk into my top twenty metal albums of all time. Still one of the loudest bands I've ever seen too - November 1991 at Newcastle City Hall was something of a revelatory coming-of-age gig for the 14 year old me, and they were as intense as ever the last time I saw them a few years back. Sad news. Though it's grimly ironic how much 'necroticising fasciitis' sounds like a Slayer song title.

Spookily enough I was thinking the exact same thing earlier.

I'm so glad I got to see them play in Leeds a couple of years ago. RIP Jeff. My band (that we don't do much with anymore) have a gig in a couple of months. We'll be pulling out our War Ensemble cover.

Very poignant blog from Randy Blythe about the aftermath of his acquittal:

Black Sabbath's new album, 13, is streaming on iTunes. It's very good, sounds like classic Sabbath but up-to-date, Brad Wilk is excellent on drums.

Aye, it's alreet. Some cringey lyrics but some classic riffs and power chord action

I hear the Sabbath album got to number one, ahead of Liam Gallaghers new offering...
