Opeth is, for me, the greatest metal band of all time. I think they're the only band to truly express the angst and frustration that metal is said to represent, while at the same time branching out into other styles and emotions. It's as though they were angry at first, then they calmed down and experienced other things besides anger, as they moved from straight-out anger into a type of calm melancholy and darkness, as evidenced by their forays into jazz fusion (Still Life) and psychedelic rock (Damnation). The music takes you on journeys that feel familiar, but which lead you to places you've never been. Always captivating, fully engrossing, alternately uplifting and depressing, encompassing both the dark and light sides of the human psyche, Opeth is a behemoth band in the world of metal and music in general.
