I'm liking the 5 stars. Others are entitled to their opinions, but for me, this is one of the few films where I fail to comprehend how anyone could not love it. It's an action movie (and a superb one at that, I'll take the fight sequences in this over The Matrix ANY day, although somehow I think I'll probably be alone in that opinion on these forums...) with a genuine heart at its core. Ang Lee has always been great at exploring the effects of social constraints on his characters, but he truly excels himself here. The love between Li Mu Bai and Shu Lien is one of the most quietly devastating love stories in cinema as far as I'm concerned - and the terrific Michelle Yeoh (the REAL star of this film) underpins that beautifully, particularly at the end of the film. The concept of "honour" just feels so remarkably hollow after watching this. Another point to add would be the fact that the film possesses such a rich tapestry of breathtaking images - say what you want about the content, but it truly is a marvel to look at.

Moreover, I feel that this is one of the few films which succeeds on EVERY aspect of the filmmaking process if that makes sense? Ang Lee's direction is superb, the acting is good if not great (see: Zhang, and especially Yeoh who completely transcends her role), I personally feel that the story is gripping and I love the mythical folklore aspect of it, the cinematography is faultless, the art direction is great, the costumes are wonderful, the score is possibly my favourite of the 21st century thus far, the visual effects are excellent etc. etc.

Anyway, to cut to the chase, I truly adore this movie. One day I'll write a proper review. But until then, it can proudly reside in my all-time top 20 - where it'll stay for some time to come, I imagine.

Im not really a fan of the movie. Movies like this, Hero and Flying Daggers all have complex and interesting stories and thats a good thing, but I just cant stand all the flying shit! Maybe its seen as beautiful to some, but it makes me cringe and puts me off movies like this. I like to watch a martial artist doing what I call proper martial arts. Id take Ong Bak over all 3 of the movies.

One of the best films of its kind. Personally, I hated Hero and thought House Of Flying Daggers was excellent until the second half.

Thanks for your comments Captain, glad that we share an opinion. Same with you Zatoichi, I completely agree that Hero is ridiculously overrated. It just felt and looked so completely artificial to me and the whole Rashomon-style plot rip-off just wasn't convincing nor engaging IMO (I think Rashomon itself is slightly overrated too - gotta quit using that dreaded "o" word). If it wasn't for the marvellous Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung (seriously, are these two EVER bad? Like, ever? And together they're the equivalent of a cinematic orgasm, these two should partner up all the time), I'd think even less of the movie. Whatever emotional grounding the film has is due to their great performances IMO.

I agree re: House of Flying Daggers too. It was a helluva lot better technically than Hero, and it was absolutely gorge to look at particularly in those final scenes but the plot just felt nonsensical and Zhang Ziyi and Andy Lau were completely incapable in their roles IMO.

I know those comments might smack some people as sounding slightly hypocritical coming from a Crouching Tiger fanatic, but what really sold CTHD for me was the fact that it always felt believable to me - even when they were flying through trees. It just felt "real". Moreover, I didn't get lost in the plot, I just revelled in the wider themes of sacrificial love and social constraints that it was commentating on. I felt Hero and HOFD lacked anything that made the films convincing or swept me away in their respective stories, and thus (along with various other aspects dependent on the film in question) they didn't amount to satisfactory film experiences for me. I do realise that many feel differently, of course.

This film makes 'Monkey', that fuckin crap program from the 70's, look like oscar material. The way people big this movie up fuckin shocks me. The wire work is over-used, and the martial arts isn't all that. I have seen better, and hated worse!

CTHD is breathtaking, emotionally gripping and for once isn't a film that is about the martial arts, but rather about the complexity of its characters. The martial arts are simply a complement to this beautiful film. At the top of my list of all time favourites!

Although I greatly respect its legacy and the film itself, I do not consider this all that absorbing with the films climatic impact weakened by surealism and more exciting scenes that occured earlier. That said, this is an excellant martial arts film, setting the standard for others to follow. The acting in its three leads is brilliant and notably rising star Zhang Ziyi. Highlights include some awesome fight scenes, some sumptuous landscapes and a well crafted script. This is a must see film but that doesnt mean it is flawed.
