Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the first book, The Court of The Air, I thought I would give the follow up a go. Once again Stephen Hunt returns us to the incredibly rich steampunk world whereby humans mix with steam powered iron creatures and lobster like Craybians. he paints scenes and situations with wonderful detail evoking a real sense of Victoriana. The characters themselves are very believable and although the central character of the archeologist Amelia Harsh does not have the same crediblility as the central figure in the previous book she still works very well. The use of rich character names such as the forementioned Amelia Harsh and also Gabriel McCabe, Bull Kammerlan and other such names help bring a sense of the nearly real but different to the fore. There is a real sense of peril to the book in the same manner there was in its predecessor. You cannot guarantee that any character will necessarily survive through to the end and many do not. The plot itself is wonderfully plotted and draws the reader in. Overall I would say a strong 8.5 out of 10.
