The 10 Essential Batman Comics list is pretty good. Swap number 1 with number 3 and it's better.

Glad you like it. It's not a countdown, as such; it's just ten you should read. So we're not saying number one is better than number 2, and so on.

i would swap the killing joke with the dark knight returns and have it at number 2.  Year one in my opinion is a better story

I would also take out Hush as i personally can not stand it and put Gotham by Gaslight in its place.

A great little story about Jack the Ripper

Oh, okay. Then it's a very good list

Little TDK sidenote, the viral game FINALLY came to an end last night - those lucky American bastards all got preview screening IMAX tickets. Well, those who were fast enough off the mark did.

Seriously dig the list although to be honest I'd switch the top two around; I don't think a Batman comic had ever brought me so close to tears as in the final panel. Can't wait for what tomorrow brings...

Year One is very, very good indeed, and since I've just realized that it's not a top ten countdown but merely a list, it's a pretty natural choice. But I love The Dark Knight Returns, I love it to death, in my opinion it's perfect.
As for Hush, I'm not the biggest fan of the piece, but the storyline does have it's merits and the artwork is sensationally good. Batman - War on Crime by Dini and Ross could have been included, admittedly mostly because of the artwork, but still

I personally cannot believe that "Batman Vs Predator" didn't make the list but hey ho !!

My wife turned to me in bed the other night and said "baby, what are you going to do if The Dark Knight turns out to be a pile of shit!?" ... I havent slept since then !!

Yea it is kind of a moot point really as we both realised after that it is just a randomed numbered list rather than a countdown.

DKR is a spot on read and is a perfect book but i love the simplicity and narrative that is in Year One.  For me it is even more well constructed on the whole than DKR

Hush does have some beautiful art, but then it is Jim Lee, but the story is just utter shit in my opinion and really does not deserve to be in the same list as the likes of year one, DKR, the killing joke etc.

It is Jim Lee. The man is a God with the pencil I agree that the story isn't superb, but I definitely wouldn't call it utter shit either. It's not exactly essential reading and as such I guess you're right that it could have easily been excluded, but it has a fresh vibe to it that I find somewhat appealing.

I've re-read Year One recently, absolutely bloody brilliant, more understated than DKR and all the better for it-don't get me wrong though, I love DKR. Has anyone read the sequel? Dark Knight Strikes Back? It's awful.

Best of both worlds (the cross over with Superman) is pretty good, that'd probably make my list.

A good list, yes, like previously said not a top ten just a list. I did want No man's land saga on there as it was pretty huge. And you get some batman family fun in there too. There's some good new Batman out there too, ressurrection of Ra's Al Ghul and Batman and Son anyone?

But what am i saying? anything batman's good right?

Personally i love the batman versus preadtor on myself. Great Read and one of the better crossovers.

Please tell your wife that TDK will be frickin awesome and such blasphemies will be frowned upon.

great list of books by the way.

Just a minor, quibbling fanboy-esque point, but the Joker began as a murderous clown, then became harmless and campy. He didn't start off as a bothersome prankster, he degenerated into one in the 50's-60's.

That was a really good list. I've read most of them, too, apart from Arkham Asylum and Dark Victory (gotta get that though, Long Halloween is excellent).

Not really sure what else I'd add - maybe A Lonely Place of Dying, for its brilliant depiction of Two-Face, and the arrival of Tim Drake's Robin.  And I'd wager that, once it's done, Batman RIP would get a place in the list.

Also, I quite enjoyed Hush - it was sort of a jumping-on point for the current Bat universe for me, and I quite liked how the story unfolded gradually.  Ultimately, I think Hush's plan was a bit daft and vague, but whilst it was ongoing it was an enjoyable read.  I especially liked Bruce's relationship with Catwoman.  Maybe if he really is hanging up the cape & cowl, the two of them can go off and get married, Earth 2-style

Says in the mag this month that the review's due 21st July, if I remember correctly.

Although I'm fairly certain at least one of the team has already seen it.  But so far we've been denied any clues, sob!

the review of it on The Sun website was very praising, although that doesn't say a great deal!

Really good list, though i do own nearly all those books so i'm a little biased. While Hush doesn't have the strongest story, the characterisation is spot on plus it's a fun story and nice to see most of Batman's rouge gallery appear as well as all his allies for a change. I love the stuff with Batman and Nightwing.

Overall it's a solid list with only a couple of caveats. Hush isn't bad by any means, nor is it a particularly definitive title for the Caped Crusader. I've never really understood why it receives the accolades it does, outside of Jim Lee's breathtaking work. I would have recommended The Laughing Fish story (Detective Comics 875-876) in its place. I'm also not the biggest Knightfall fan and would replace it with either the Face to Face story from One Year Later that James Robinson wrote or No Man's Land. I did like the inclusion of Arkham Asylum as its the perfect primer for the upcoming movie, Another list that Empire may want to do is either a top ten list of the best Joker episodes or top ten of all the episodes from the 1992 animated series. While one of the more recent takes on Batman, its easily one of the more definitive ones as well.

I'm not a big fan of No Man's Land.  I kinda think it veers away from what's great about Batman (the urban vigilante/mythology aspect).  It's actually a pretty interesting story, but I think the whole Contagion/Cataclysm/NML is slightly silly, and would have worked better as an Elseworlds story.  We're getitng into the whole "realism in a comic" argument here, but it just feels a bit daft to me that James Gordon is a policeman in a sort of feudal state, and then Lex Luthor manages to rebuild all of Gotham in about six months.

Although, I'm a big Cassie Cain fan, despite her current reinvention as Deathstroke's murdering stooge, and it's nice to her see her origin as Batgirl.

Good list. I own Year One, The Long Halloween, Dark Knight Returns, Hush. Would like to get Dark Victory and perhaps Death in the Family.

I also have Batman Black & White. Very good. Short 8-page stories done in Black and white. I particularly like Good Evening, Midnight and Bent Twigs (Batman confronts a Dad about to throw his son's cat off the roof)

I need to get Knightfall and Death in the Family but i'm way too concerned with keeping up with Grant Morrisons run on Batman. I genuinely have no idea what's going to happen. it breaks my heart that this could be,  and in fact according to Morrison is, the end of Bruce Wayne as Batman. Yet at the same time it's just so interesting a read that i'm drawn in.

As for Hush, i think Paul Dini's Heart of Hush story that's just started this week could add some more depth to the character.

When you go to watch the I'm Marvel, I'm Batman, stay on YouTube and watch the rest, there's a whole series of those movies, and they are all really funny!  They feature lots of Marvel and DC characters complaining about how their movies keep on getting ruined by studios etc.  Check em out!

Technically, this is more of a 7 (6 now) day countdown for me, because i'll be in new york when it comes out (not trying to brag or anything). But these articles are brilliant so far that i'm gonna keep reading them. Especially loved 'robin's big date' and the marvel/dc thing. The 10 comics are awesome too!
