What's the best modern slasher? Obvious answer is Scream. I don't like the Halloween remake by the way. Explaining why Michael Myers is a nutjob takes away some of the fear if you ask me.

Scream was ok but not for a modern day slasher now perhaps in 1996 yeah but not now theres been much better films than that since like Hatchet, The Tripper, Dark Ride (not to bad) and much more but for me the best modern slasher has got to be 'Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon' original and amazing

Sorry but I disagree Scream and Scream 2 are the best slashers of the last decade. Pure and simple. Ok Williamson's dialogue is dated but it gave you twists, characters you gave a shit about (Which is lacking from most slashers and brutal deaths. Ok not ott like Hatchet but the stabbings are raw in Scream and Scream 2.) Hatchet was hyped to death for me but I think it's good but not that great! In fact if you wanna see a great, fun slasher you should check out Wrong Turn 2: Dead End. Whole new animal compared to the original, great nod to 80's slashers and by all accounts the film Hostel wishes it was.

On another note, we all know the slasher sterotypes, soooo can anyone name a film in which they are played around with. For example Gale from Scream, what a bitch yet she lives through the whole series. It's re-freshing. Any other similar instances guys?

Behind The Mask is good Halloweenfreak, and the idea was amazing but sadly mate it still left me a bit luke warm. I got it. Loved it but they could have done more. I dun know. Maybe it was THAT good I just wanted more!!! Lol. Hardly any gore thought so thats a warning for gore fans.

Also Halloweenfreak I take it you picked up the amazing Halloween: Nightdance comic? (Issue 1 to 4) Great story and if it was a movie it would be up there with the original, pt 4 and H20. I liked the remake as Danielle Harris returned after the shit deal Dimension offered her for pt 6 and the look of Myers. However as it's stated above the whole "My childhood made me kill" was the most redundant thing ever. Meh. Early word has it the guys who made Inside are being lined up for the new Halloween, hopefully Harris will return!

Um... the boyfriend of Elisha Cuthbert's character in House of Wax gets killed off much quicker than would be expected, since usually the heroine's boyfriend lasts at least until the climax.

Oh yeah, and Jennifer Love Hewitt has sex during the course of I Know What You Did Last Summer [albeit offscreen] and lives, much like Sidney in Scream.

That's off the top of my head, I'll try to think of more.

No man, not like that. None of thats shocking, I mean stuff like surprise survivours? How many times do the sluts or jocks or bitchy gals live? Hardly ever and 9 times out of ten they are the more fun characters. Im sick to death (No pun intended) of Sensible Sally, someone grab a hatchet! Lol.

Perhaps, yeah, but a remake in which you didn't explain Michael's background would be exactly the same as the original, and we've already seen that. Zombie was right to take it in a slightly different direction.

As for best modern slasher, I suppose it has to be Scream, really. Can we count Saw and Sleepy Hollow as slashers, though? Both of them run Scream close.

Nah, I wouldn't say so. Yeah I agree with ur point about the ditrection Zombie took and yeah it's a Rob Zombie film but I still found it detracted from what made our Mic so great. Not knowing.

I'm gonna throw down some of my fave slashers in no order

A Nightmare On Elm Street

Friday The 13th

Halloween

Scream

Scream 2

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Friday The 13th 3-D ( I think this has the best last act of all of 'em. It dragged out so long)

Friday The 13th Pt 6: Jason Lives (This did the whole Scream thing a decade earlier)

Halloween 4 : The Return of Michael Myers

Wrong Turn 2: Dead End

Some of the older stuff like The Prowler and The Burning I haven seen in years. Anyone remember Madman Mars? Very kooky but moody slasher.

Also a few years ago a film came out under the radar named Venom. Great little slasher. Check it out. Has some v.cool kills. It had awsome potential and sadly it's not fully realized.

Looking forward to All The Boy's Love Mandy Lane next week. Heard great things, sadly I know the twist.

See, I wouldn't class Silence and Red Dragon as slasher films. For me, a slasher film is one where we primarily follow the people who end up getting killed, rather than focusing on the cops tracking down the killer.

What about torture-porn films? Are they the latest progression of the slasher, after the original cycle of the 80s and the teen-friendly cycle of the late 90s?

. Hahaha, mate, Halloween: Nightdance has been out for months. Obviously it was released one issue at a time over a four month peroid. So you may be talking about the collection of all four issues? Thats out later this month I think.

No torture porn etc and Red Dragon etc should be left for the Horror Appreciation Socitey. I love this thread as it says what it is nice and simple. Slasher! Stalker going around killing teens or young adults, unless it a high scool reuinion (Im lookin at you Slaughter High!) Anyway I'm off to watch Frontiers!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can get the Vipco uncut Burning over here region 2 well cheap i'm sure.

For me the slasher movie will always only have one definition. It is not any movie that is gory or any movie with a lot of blood letting or grue. A slasher movie is any movie where a group of people is stalked one by one by a killer, masked or not, in a horror sense. So not a murder mystery per se. If it's a killer, offing people one by one, gory or not (a lot of slashers arent even that gruesome) in a horror movie frame work, then it's a slasher. I've heard people call Zombie movies slashers before, it's like WTF!!! Basically use Halloween or Friday the 13th as the archetype, if it veers significantly from that formula, it's not a slasher. In my book at least! Anyone agree/ disagree?

Wel put my friend, just as i've said earlyer, you need a psycho killer who use's sharp weapons not guns or bombs, and a group of victims  to be murdered.Halloween is a great example but it also falls into the supernatuarl horror gerne too,as micheal is a force of unstopable evil.
But Kdawg this is not a slasher.

It is a gothic horror masterpiece, about witchcraft and the power of darkness, even though it has some killings that give it a slasher feel.

Its a great film still its one of my favourite none slasher films I have ever seen...scared the shit out of me....your right Evil Bill about it to do with witchcraft but there are some elements that makes it feel like a slasher but I would say that Dario Argento's 'Hatchet Murders' is a slasher if there's anyone who agrees with me?

New slasher film released not to long ago called 'The Tripper' a psychopath who looks like Ronald Reagan hacking up a bunch of hippies...very funny and some stupid gore I loved it.
Keep an eye out for the remake of 'Firday the 13th' I think it should be good.

I wanna be a film director for horror and doing slasher films is so totally the easiest I'd love to do them for a living...I'm in the middle of writting my first slasher scripts influenced by 'Halloween, Behind the Mask and Hatchet'

I wrote a couple of slasher screenplays a few years ago [one very Scream-style, the other more akin to Halloween/Friday the 13th]. Never did anything about trying to get them produced though, I probably should.

Slightly OT: So last night I watched Frontier(s). It's AMAZING. You all should pick it up. U guys won't be dissapointed. The characters are good, the story is very good and creepy and the kills are GREAT! Word of caution, it's not going to reienvent the horror genre and it borrows heavily from other films but as an overall package it's great. It makes Hatchet look like the latest Disney movie.

The characters in Hacthet are v.good and funny but the lack of budget lets it down. Lots of "Oh Man! How the hell did we end up back here? We are going around in circels!!!" Yet when you take into account Adam Green's budget and passion you can forgive it. It's a neat love letter to Jason etc but it was criminally overhyped.

I was welcome impressed with Hatchet cause its an old school 80's style American slasher updated into modern times and I thought Green done an awesome job with it

One of my favourite modern slashers is Halloween Camp, from a few years ago. A couple of rough patches but it REALLY evokes that precious 80's atmosphere i love so much, and being camp set it pushes all the right buttons for me, great movie. It's kinda the sequel to Scream Bloody Murder (which is pretty good in itself IMO) but works fine as a standalone, and spawned a sequel itself, Halloween Camp 2, which was pretty awful.

Anyone seen I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer? I just ordered it from play.com. Was a big fan of the first two, they were a good flipside to the Scream movies, lacking the majority of the post modern irony.
