It is partly because he never seems to care whether the people in front of the camera can act or not. One of the first ones we see – the mother – certainly can't. Problem with realism is that people are in front of a camera - and when they are awful it is horrible to watch.

Masina has an amazing face – but can she act? The inconsistency is ad hoc – the mentally challenged clown jars badly when some scenes are clearly played as a 'normal' woman. One or t'other – the character isn't created well enough to encompass both aspects. It comes across like different ideas at different times and simply doesn't make sense. Also – maybe just me – but she seems more than a little old for the character as created. Baseheart I rate poorly.

The script – I just don't believe it. The problem with plotting loosely is that it doesn't always come together. And this doesn't. The fool's provocation and ultimate death seem as jarring and contrived as the final scenes in Jules et Jim.

The rest? Only Quinn emerges with honours intact as a coherent  well-played brute finally feeling remorse. Some of the camerawork, particularly in the crowd scenes, is excellent.

Btw, Piles, what did you think of La Dolce Vita? Did you see anymore Fellini?

Ok, I'm off to watch The 400 Blows. jamesbondguy, would you say you recommend that one?

Dante, I hope you would disagree with at least one line from elab: "Masina has an amazing face - but can she act?" - and not the part about her face.

Can Masina act?  There's more revealed about Gelsomina's character through Masina's expressions in the very first scene of the film than some actors can do in a whole film.  She's utterly marvellous, possibly more so in Nights Of Cabiria.

I'd note again to my concern about consistency - a random set of pulled faces most of the time. And it is difficult to watch her at all when her mother - quite the worst actress in the history of film - is doing her schtick. Great to see Fargo making the top 10, Black Narcissus will fall after a few more reviews. Or will it?

La Strada certainly got mixed reviews.

And the chart says goodbye to Sin City, Forrest Gump, Braveheart and Life is Beautiful

 La Chinoise: 7/10. It's good, but not as good as Godard's other stuff (that I've seen). I suppose it's because I'm not really into politics or communism. But I'd still recommend it, just for the experimental side of it.

If you were paying attention that 'random' set of pulled faces actually reveal something about her character.  I know what you mean and I'll admit that in one or two places it's ever so slightly overdone, but because the character is so unique I'm prepared to forgive some minor slips.  In fact I'm amazed that a character like this is managed to be portrayed at all, and portrayed well. 

I don't know what inciteful and pointed relationship comments you refer to, but I see no inconsistency in her character to make this unbelieveable.

I would also disagree on you labelling a background character who has little over 2 minutes screen time "the worst actress in history".  Not that she's even that bad, far from the worst.  If this is one of the main reasons you hate this film, I'd seriously question any other judgements you made of the film.

Um - I was. We just don't agree

I did wonder what would happen if a film was chosen and only one person voted for it and gave it a 10!

Floating Clouds 7.5/10

La Chinoise - I know I didn't like it (otherwise I'd be able to say I don't like Godard BUT), but it has been so long since I've seen it I don't really feel confident enough to give it a fair mark.

Unbreakable is a tough one, it has much to praise for it - the slow burning atmospheric quality, Samuel L. Jackson's mesmerizing performance, some excellent set pieces. However as a whole it somehow just didn't work, some of the dialogue is a little corny (scene with the kid and the gun a real nadar), the pace is sometimes plodgy, Willis isn't playing too far from his role in Sixth Sense and is the twist really clever or silly? I think if Shyamalan had been able to continue with the story in another sequel then it would have been interesting to re-evaluate the film. As it stands, it's a real curio.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is Spielberg's second best Indy film. Connery and Ford are absolutely terrific together and Alison Doody is a fiesty companion. Over time, the Jones films have definitely grown on me.

 Unbreakable: Neither the film nor its ending is as good as The Sixth Sense, but both parts are still quality stuff. It's been a while since I've watched, and slow pacing occasionally gets a little too slow. Still, quality performances from Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson heighten what is actually not an ordinary thriller. Shiaymalan may be a bit hit-and-miss, but when's he on, he's on. I'm a little unsecure about the rating since I haven't watched it in full in a while.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: Whenever I watch Raider of the Lost Ark, I always feel that there is something I'm missing, even if I can't put my finger on it. With The Last Crusade, there's nothing missing. It's got the best action of the series, the best humor of the series, the best music of the series and it's actually very emotionally deep too... well, somewhat, anyway.

 Unbreakable gets 5/5. Great performances wonderful score and a superb atmosphere.

Last Crusade also gets 5/5. Quite possibly the most all out entertaining film I've ever seen. Stupendous fun.

 Unreakable: 8/10. Definitely my favourite Shyamalan film, with perhaps my favourite Willis performance and a very good Jackson one to boot.

Last Crusade: 7/10. Very good film, but perhaps my least favourite of the Indy series.
