Weird Science - 6/10
Gets by on some of its goofy charm but this is a very silly movie.

Welcome to the Dollhouse - 8/10
Solondz' uncomfortable dark comedy follows the early teen life of an unofortunate young girl. Heather Matarazzo is perfect.

Dazed and Confused - 9/10
A perfectly breezy capture of a time and place, as a group of American schoolkids decide what to do on last day of school. Its all character work here and there's a great cast, director Linklater just lets it be a character piece rather than worry about daft jokes. That's what makes it an above rate teen comedy.

After the Thin Man - 8/10
Loy and Powell are perfect once again in the first sequel with hilarious dialogue throughout ("Are you packing dear?" "I'm just putting this liquor away") and a great little mystery with a nice twist. Goes on a bit too long though.

Superbad - 7/10
Finally got around to this and it's a total riot. Has only a couple of misfires, which is kind of unique for these American comedies. Great bunch of characters, and Michael Cera's uncomfortable and cute routine is at its best.

Sixteen Candles - 7/10
Again cheesy as hell and Hughes seems to write dialogue as bumper stickers, but it has its moments and Ringwald is an extremely likeable lead.

#2 on Beetlejuice!'s list...

12 Years a Slave (2013)
Steve McQueen's historical drama, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender.

#13 on Beetlejuice!'s list...

Blancanieves (2012)
A gorgeous, black-and-white homage to the Golden Age of Europe's silent cinema, the intoxicating Blancanieves relocates the tale of Snow White to a sweepingly romantic vision of 1920s Spain, where a young girl escapes from her wicked stepmother to find fame as a matador.

#17 on Beetlejuice!'s list...

American Hustle (2013)
An FBI sting operation in the 1970s called Abscam leads to the conviction of United States Congressmen.

#22 on Beetlejuice!'s list...

Warm Bodies (2013)
A handsome male zombie falls for a pretty young woman with a pulse.

12 Years a Slave - 10/10
Extremely hard-going but a very worthy film. Performances and direction are first class.

Blancanieves - 9/10
Totally original take on the Snow White legend. Gorgeous to watch.

American Hustle - 9/10
Another brilliant film from David O. Russell who is fast becoming one of my favourite directors. The cast are outstanding.

Warm Bodies - 8/10
Nicholas Hoult's zombie is hotter than either of the Twilight boys that's for sure and the film is in a league of its own. Funny, creepy and romantic. Its a great mix.

This Sporting Life - 8/10
Richard Harris gives one hell of a performance in this bleak, gritty British drama. It's like the UK's version of Raging Bull but with rugby instead of boxing.

#5 on garvielloken's list...

Upstream Colour (2003)
Shane Carruth's experimental drama follow-up to his sci-fi debut Primer.

#8 on garvielloken's list...

Runawaya Train (1985)
Jon Voight is a hard-as-nails lifer who escapes prison only to find himself trapped on a runaway train boring its way through Alaska. Oscar nominated action film adapted from an abandoned screenplay by Akira Kurosawa.

#8 on garvielloken's list...

Close-Up (1990)
Iranian con-and-courtroom drama with a difference. A fraudster who resembles a film director sets about deceiving a family who are obsessed by cinema. Based on a true story.

#10 on garvielloken's list...

Nebraska (2013)
Director Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants) takes the helm for this black and white road trip drama starring Bruce Dern as a tempestuous Missouri father who's convinced he's won a million dollar magazine sweepstakes, and Will Forte as the son who grudgingly agrees to drive him to Nebraska to claim his winnings.

Runaway Train - 8/10
Jon Voight's performance is grandly OTT but in a good way in this tense action flick.

Nebraska - 9/10
Brilliant slice of life from Alexander Payne, a melancholy tale with spiked humour and a massive heart. Good performances all round.

The Wild One - 8/10
Marlon Brando arrives in phenomenal style. Predictably it's a little dated but it's still a pretty excellent look at youth culture of the '50s Americana.

Killer Joe - 8/10
OK, I'm finally giving in, Matthew McConaughey can be a pretty good actor. This is one dark twisted noir, horrible characters, brilliant acting, great plot and some disturbing moments all make up for one unforgettable movie. Whether its a trip I'd wanna take again is another matter.

#15 on garvielloken's list...

Louie Bluie (1985)
String band leader Howard Armstrong (Louie Bluie) is the joyful, emotive, strutting subject of this tribute by fellow musician and cellist Terry Zwigoff.

#16 on garvielloken's list...

Yeelen (1987)
Filmed in the African country of Mali, Yeelen (Brightness) weaves several Kenyan folk stories into an engaging framework.

#17 on garvielloken's list...

The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On (1987)
A brilliant exploration of memory and war guilt, a subject often ignored in modern Japan. In this controversial documentary, Kazuo Hara follows Kenzo Okuzaki in his real-life struggle against Emperor Hirohito.

#19 on garvielloken's list...

Wake in Fright (1971)
Ted Kotcheff (The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz) directs Wake In Fright, the paranoid tale of a teacher's lofty ideas brought low in the Australian outback.

Persepolis - 10/10
A thoroughly engaging and original animated tale. Great animation tells the tale of one young woman's turbulent life as she battles the restraints of her community.

Avengers Assemble - 9/10
Only just getting round to this. A downright fun movie that is willing to have a little laugh at itself as well.

I Saw the Devil - 8/10
A little bit too grim at times, this is a dark and unforgettable thriller.
