Liberal Arts 7/10 - Very underrated, a slow starter with a few pretenoius scenes, however there are some delightfully observed, warm and funny moments, and Olsen's performance is truly believeable and one of the finests of the last year.

Killer Joe 7/10 - Nasty and haunting film, with a string of great performances, but by the end it just felt too uneven and explotive.
About Elly 8/10 - Its not quite A Sepration but is still a breathless and gripping piece of cinema perfectly paced and acted.
Gregory's Girl 8/10 - One of Britain's best ever romantic comdies.
The People VS. Larry Flynt 8/10 - Engrossing black comedy with Harrelson at his slipery best.
Serpico 8/10 - Powerful
Amarcord 10/10 - Fellini at his most fluid, visually stunning.
Vera Drake 8/10 - Very moving, with great period style.

Quirky, heartfelt little romantic tale. Scotland's best until Trainspotting?

Life of Pi (2012)
Ang Lee adapts Yann Martel's Booker prize-winner.

#13 on Qwerty Norris' list...

Amour (2012)
Michael Haneke's Cannes-winning study of an elderly couple.

#15 on Qwerty Norris' list...

#18 on Qwerty Norris' list...

That Sinking Feeling  (1979)
Brilliantly surreal Bill Forsyth comedy about four bored, unemployed Glaswegian teenagers who hatch a plan to rob a warehouse full of sinks (because one of them has noticed that they're worth a lot). Also enjoyable for fans of bad hair.

Beasts of the Southern Wild - 8/10
Life of Pi - 8/10

Two of tonight's big Oscar nominees. Both visually outstanding coming-of-age tales with moments of fantasy. Beasts has a lovely lead performance from the young girl and Pi is Lee at his most adventurous and technically outstanding. Would be happy if either film picked up a few awards.

A fast and funny animated adventure. Not the most original story or characters but still it's outstanding family entertainment with an excellent setting. The outcome for the hero is well handled and unique.

Crazy, Stupid, Love - 8/10
It does get a little silly towards the end but it's still one of Hollywood's best romantic comedies in a long time, thanks to a very good cast.

Brave - 9/10
The script may be lacking ever-so-slightly but the animation, design, characters and vocals are as tip top as always. A great lead heroine as well, I hope Pixar expands on this film with a sequel.

Orphans of the Storm - 7/10
A film I admired as opposed to enjoyed (I did fall asleep about 4 times). It's not helped by having too many characters introduced early on and that epic running time. However the Gish girls are very good and the crowd sequences are directed with skill. The final 20 minutes gets very intense. Probably not the film to change your mind on silent cinema if your not already a fan.

#18 on MOTH's list...

Hugo (2011)
Martin Scorsese's first family film runs its period mystery adventure like clockwork, while celebrating the magic of cinema.

#20 on MOTH's list...

The Sound of Fury (1950)
A man down on his luck falls in with a criminal. After a senseless murder, the two are lynched.

#20 on jamesbondguy's list...

The Big Sleep (1946)
Hard-boiled film noir with Bogey and Bacall picking their way through a tangled web of intrigue with more layers than a Spanish onion. Forget the plot, smoke 'em if you've got 'em and enjoy.

#20 on TheManWithNoShame's list...

Playtime (1967)
French comedian and director Jacques Tati's most ambitious and complex work, this avant-garde extravaganza tears up the rules of classical screen comedy with breathtaking panache.

Hugo - 9/10
Masterful work from Scorsese, his sweetest and most romantic piece. Though the romance is for the love of cinema.

The Big Sleep - 8/10
Odd that this classic hasn't appeared in this thread yet. An excellent film noir with Bogie and Bacall at their best, plot gets a bit confusing however.

We Need to Talk About Kevin - 8/10
Disturbing, thought provoking movie with fine performances from everyone involved, particularly Tilda Swinton's lead role, one of her best.

Ran - 10/10
A grand, epic scale piece of work from visionary director Akira Kurosawa. There are some truly stunning sequences in amongst the smaller moments of human emotion. Its a big movie, is probably the best way to put it, from the scale of the huge battle sequences down to the acting style. An unforgettable masterpiece and a very clever adaptation of Shakespeare's King Lear.

another spin-off list planned so I need ratings for the following....

The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969)
This film is another Disney comedy romp that takes place at the ubiquitous Medfield College.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953)
The everyday story of a music teacher whose passion for the piano leads him to set up a prison camp dedicated exclusively to the instrument. A Dr Seuss musical jam-packed with manic originality and great tunes.

Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)
Po (Jack Black) and friends must defeat evil tyrant peacock Shen (Gary Oldman) who wants to rule China and wipe out the art of kung fu.

The Love Bug (1968)
A plucky Volkswagen with a mind of its own overcomes numerous predictable plot obstacles to speed its racing driver owner to the finish line in this live-action family favourite from Disney.

National Velvet (1944)
Fresh-faced pair Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney take on the world of professional horse racing in this family favourite.

The Neverending Story (1984)
A young boy helps save a fairytale kingdom with the power of his imagination in this top-notch children's fantasy from the director of Das Boot, Wolfgang Petersen.

Kung Fu Panda 2 - 8/10
First film was alright but the sequel surpassed the promise with a thrilling, fun filled adventure. Also Gary Oldman's psychotic peacock is one of the best animated villians of the past decade.

The Neverending Story - 9/10
A firm childhood favourite in this magical fantasy flick. Special effects still hold up pretty well today. The film isn't afriad to get pretty dark at times.
