Uma Thurman and Janeane Garofalo are great but the film itself is a bit wet.

Blue Velvet - 9/10
Weird crazy Lynch at his moody best. Hopper is amazing.

Quantum of Solace - 7/10
Some of the action sequences are fantastic, some are a bit messy. This started off pretty good but became a little formulaic towards the end and I lost interest in the story. I'm wondering if the new James Bourne'd is now as much fun as the tongue-in-cheek version. Where's the gadgets?

Taken - 6/10
Liam Neeson is excellent but the film gets sillier and sillier as it goes along, with a very '80s style "Anyone not from America is a sleazy villian" view.

Run Lola Run - 8/10
The techno 90s style has dated a little but this is still an enjoyable, quirky and wildly imaginative piece of cinema.

Blow Out - 7/10
One of De Palma's best thrillers and an interesting companion piece to films like The Conversation and Blow-Up from which it is heavily influenced. Travolta is pretty good her as well in one of his best roles.

Public Enemies - 5/10
The film looks pretty amazing but it's actually pretty dull and Christian Bale and Johnny Depp just don't really convince as much as I'd hope. Marion Cotillard on the other hand is fantastic as Dillinger's girlfriend. Has its moments but this was a bit of a disappointment.

#15 on MikeMovie's list...

Charade (1963)
Stanley Donen's career, which had faltered with a number of leaden comedies, was given a boost with this enjoyably flashy Hitchcockian comedy thriller.

#18 on MikeMovie's list...

Fitzcarraldo (1982)
In one of the most extraordinary feats ever filmed, opera-obsessed Klaus Kinski drags a steamboat over a mountain in the Peruvian jungle.

#3 on paul_ie86' list...

Happy-Go-Lucky (2008)
Mike Leigh's infectiously joyous comedy about a London primary school teacher.

#7 on paul_ie86' list...

Shame (2011)
Steve McQueen's follow-up to Hunger is an unflinching portrait of a New York sex addict (Michael Fassbender) whose life is thrown in turmoil when his troubled sister (Carey Mulligan) comes to visit.

Sally Hawkins gives a lovely performance as a high spirited lady in Mike Leigh's comedic drama. It's very much a character study which means the film falters slightly as it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Hawkins and Marsden are both very good in the film though. A lesser Leigh film but still one worth seeing.

Care to explain why? For me it is one of those gentle romantic comedies which is actually more about friendship and real life issues than glossy romance and steriotypes of men and women. Its very funny and well acted too!

The Truth About Cats and Dogs 8/10

Blue Velvet 10/10

Taken 4/10 - Either a guilty pleasue or a terrible film depending on your point of view

Public Enemies 6/10 - Performances are fine, but it is a muddly and for me too safe of a film

Fitzcarraldo 6.5/10 - Have to see this again but on first viewing I just found it a bit boring

Happy-Go-Lucky 7/10 - Have mixed feelings on this one, the secenes between Marson and Hawkins are simply compelling and the mix of comedy and tradgy is perfectly blended however at times I just found the lead character too annoying and I didn't really buy the reactions of people around her.

Shame 9/10 - Film of the year so far for me

Moonrise Kingdom 7.5/10 - A return to form for Anderson and his best film in over a decade.

Weekend 7.5/10 - An asbording film even if one of the characters did get on my nerves at times.

Chronicle 5/10 - Just don't get the love for this one

I just found the whole concept a bit dumb and unrealistic but yeah the performances were better than average.

Au Revoir les Enfants - 8/10
Louis Malle's subtle, detailed drama is beautifully played out. It's a slow burner but creates a rich atmosphere and the threat of war is felt throughout. The ending is quite devastating and even more so as it's all based on director Louis Malle's own childhood.

Peppermint Candy - 8/10
This took a little while to get into but it when I got hooked I was engrossed. It's dark, confusing and emotionally devastating with a great central performance. I think I would appreciate it more if I got all the similarity with Koran history but as a psychological drama it stands alone perfectly. A memorable and rather sad film.

Freaks - ONE OF US ONE OF US etc 8/10
Blue Velvet - There's a couple of Lynch's I prefer, still 9/10
Run Lola Run - At uni I set up a freeview box and held a aeriel in a specific place for the entire runtime to get a good picture when this showed on FilmFour. Totally worth it. 10/10

A nice little oddity, black comedy, horror and psychological drama all merge well in this offbeat film.
