The Blues Brothers - 8/10
Classic comedy over-the-top mayhem throughout.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance - 8/10
Weakest of the revenge trilogy but still pretty good.

Last Exit to Brooklyn - 6/10
Probably works better as a book, this is just far too bleak. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alexis Arquette are pretty excellent though.

Four Lions - 6/10
30% funny 70% stupid.

Another spin-off list planned so I'll be needing the ratings for the following....


The Crying Game (1992)
Sexual politics collide head on with actual politics in Neil Jordan's controversial Oscar winner, an IRA thriller-cum-love story with a plot bizarre enough to make studio executives spew blood.



The Dead Zone (1983)
Subtle psychological horror adapted from a Stephen King story by master of the shocking sub-text, David Cronenberg.



Dressed to Kill (1980)
A mysterious, tall, blonde woman, wearing sunglasses murders one of a psychiatrist's patients, and now she's after the prostitute who witnessed it.



Homicide (1991)
Police thriller-cum-soul searcher written and directed by David Mamet. Never one to shy from asking awkward questions, Mamet's answers are as provocative as his guttural dialogue.



House of Games (1987)
A psychiatrist comes to the aid of a compulsive gambler and is led my a smooth-talking grifter into the shadowy but compelling world of stings, scams, and con men.



Out of Sight (1998)
Stylish crime thriller from Steven Soderbergh boasting the sexy leading partnership of George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez.

The Crying Game - 9/10
Very good performances in this unusual thriller. Possibly Neil Jordan's best.

The Dead Zone - 7/10
Walken's performance is good but the film doesn't quite work altogether.

House of Games - 7/10
A little droll but an interesting thriller nontheless.

Out of Sight - 7/10
Clooney and Lopez share great chemistry but the film isn't all that interesting.

The Public Enemy (1931)

The life and times of Tony Camonte, a gangster who bares a remarkable resemblande to Al Capone. Crime drama starring Paul Muni, and directed by Howard Hawks.



Someone to Watch Over Me (1987)
A married New York cop falls for the socialite murder witness he's been assigned to protect.



Thief (1981)
Desperate to lead a normal life, an ace safecracker hopes one last job for the Mob will allow him to pursue his dream. Crime drama starring James Caan, Tuesday Weld and James Belushi, and written and directed by Michael Mann.



The Underneath (1995)
Returning to his home town after an absence of several years, reformed gambler Michael Chambers (Peter Gallagher) discovers that his wife has moved in with a criminal.



Videodrome (1983)
Cult horror that established David Cronenberg as an auteur. James Woods and Debbie Harry are sucked into a hallucinatory mediascape by a twilight TV station broadcasting scenes of torture.

Autumn Sonata (1978)

Dressed to Kill - 8/10
Far too technically minded to take serious but a complete camp classic. Overblown, overcooked but deliciously dark and seedy. It's obvious who the killer is within the first half hour but watching the whole thing unfold is great, tacky fun.

Autumn Sonata - 8/10
Nice performances but extremely downbeat, maybe not a Saturday night movie.

Brick - 8/10
Always great to see a film bursting with originality. Also good to see a film set at a high school that isn't a daft sex comedy. Cast are all great particularly Lukas Haas who steals the show. Dialogue is sometimes too hard boiled to understand which just demands a second viewing.

The African Queen - 8/10
Great work from the two leads which keeps you from overlooking some daft moments (like the terrible sound effects). Old school and that's its big appeal.
